After Dark with the National Trust

In this illustrated talk Andrew Martin, author of The Necropolis Railway, will discuss the historic reality behind the operations of the London Necropolis Company which, in 1854, opened a dedicated station near Waterloo, with the aim of despatching hundreds of thousands of corpses a year from it to its vast cemetery at Brookwood in Surrey. Martin will reveal the reasons for the rise and fall of the Necropolis idea, and the operations of the railway. And he will say why and how he sought to create a novel from the history of the grand scheme for ‘extramural interment’.
