Description

Don't be fooled by the greasy tortilla chips, shop-bought guac and sassy tequila girls that you've experienced in recent years - that's not what Mexican dining is really about. Thankfully, Wahaca have shaken things up, delivering the vibrancy, flavours and freshness of real Mexican grub.

You'll find Wahaca's Brighton outpost on North St. This swanky, 130-cover venue has been designed by award-winning architects Softroom. Step inside and you'll immediately be teleported to the street food markets of Mexico City - expect vibrant colours and funky decor; long sharing tables, low-hanging lights and quirky tile murals.

Thomasina Miers (winner of Masterchef 2005) created Wahaca after she fell in love with the flavours of Mexico during her travels there. Consequently, the menu here delivers authentic flavours and recipes that originate from Mexico's vibrant 'street food' culture. Expect to indulge on the likes 'freshly made guac with lime juice and coriander', 'slow-cooked pork topped with a red onion relish & habanero chillies', and 'sweet potato and feta taquitos'. To wash it all down, there's plenty of classic cocktails, Mexican beers, and of course, a boatload of tequila too!

I had a lovely birthday meal at Wahaca on a Wednesday night. The restaurant provided a private dining room for 25 guests and ensured everyone was comfortable and had a drink within ten minutes of sitting down. We were a big party, with a variety of dietary needs, including vegans, and the staff ensured we had all the appropriate information and took time to explain the menu. It was a relaxed dining experience, we did not feel rushed despite being there for a few hours, and the staff took time to recommend particular dishes and drinks. The food was incredible, we shared many street food dishes and each one was unique and delicious. I will definitely be returning regularly for a fix of Mexican food and would really recommend this as a great place to hold a birthday meal or any other special occasion. The staff were friendly, the food was great and the atmosphere was just what we wanted, relaxed, fun and friendly. 10/10! visited Wahaca Brighton on 12 Apr 2017

We were a large group 10+ on a Friday eve. I had eaten there before and knew the food is great, but my colleagues hadn't. They all felt it was great tasting food and a relaxed evening with great service. Thank you. I feel certain you will have a number of new customers. visited Wahaca Brighton on 31 Mar 2017

Brilliant service. We were a large table and it was all very well organised. Food was quick and very tasty. Something for everyone as half our table had specific dietary requirements. Already planning our next visit. visited Wahaca Brighton on 26 Mar 2017

Service a bit patchy. The waiting staff do not appear to have been trained to always look around as they walk the floor. Drinks menus grubby, ours smeared sauce on us. The neighbouring table's also had sauce deposits on it. We were not given replacement napkins so I had to get up and find more when our food came. We ate pork tacos, plantain tacos, a chorizo quesadilla all of which were delicious. I also ordered the deep fried squid 'Winter Special' which was disappointing: presentation unappealing, a plate of overcooked scraps which tasted little of squid but alot of salt with a bland sauce. It was ok but we went elsewhere for coffee. visited Wahaca Brighton on 07 Mar 2017

Friendly staff. Except they kept forgetting about our drinks orders and then bringing the wrong ones. Also cocktails have a nice taste but not very strong for the price. Some of the food was really tasty like the sweet potato and the plantain other things like the fish tacos were a bit bland. We would go back but an average experience if honest. visited Wahaca Brighton on 04 Mar 2017

I have been to Wahaca Brighton a dozen times since it opened last year hoping to recreate the times had when I'd been to the Westfield and Covent Garden locations. I was soooo excited when I heard they were opening in my home town of Brighton but so far my expectations have sadly not been met. Unfortunately, the lively, exciting, fun atmosphere of the London restaurants has failed to travel here and this has marred the experience of going to Wahaca. The staff seem to be in a hurry, stressed, busy chatting and have little time for their customers. I'm not sure if the training they go through in Brighton is the same as other locations but some spark is definitely missing and strangely their attitude makes the food less tasty and the experience less enjoyable. We decided, as a family, that we will give it a miss for a few months and perhaps try again in a few months...... visited Wahaca Brighton on 26 Feb 2017

Once again Brighton is many times worse than the London franchises. Tried to go in the night before - lots of tables free, they told us "at least a 40min wait", so booked for the day after. Arrived and stood waiting to be seated (no queue, just no staff) for nearly 10mins. And although I can see if you go for the market options they might come out separately, there's no real excuse for serving a lukewarm dish of enchiladas so late that the person you are with has paractically finished their lukewarm burrito. The London branches are brilliant, Brighton continues to disappoint, just like the other two items I've been. Sort it out Thomasina! visited Wahaca Brighton on 04 Feb 2017

Our waitress Selena was lovely, so helpful and friendly. The restaurant itself is beautiful clean and modern. But ... this was my first visit to wahaca, and I was a little disappointed with the food, I felt it was a bit oily and lacked In flavour. Maybe it's what I chose but I won't be rushing back. The food was great! My only comment would be that for some reason all the food for the large sharing platter seem to take priority over all the other meals - mine came out last of all (one of the two dishes was forgotten) and my young son's food came out after most of the other kids and adults received theirs. I appreciate we were a big group (6 adults and 6 kids) and the bill was very kindly reduced for my late dish without even asking. I'd happily recommend it and would come again. visited Wahaca Brighton on 22 Jan 2017

A first visit for all but one of our party of 12 and some knew nothing about Mexican food so we ordered several of the Wahaca and Mexican feasts so that we could share dishes. This was a great success and everyone really enjoyed the food and had more than enough to eat, at a very reasonable price. A couple of us also very much enjoyed the chocolate chilli Tequila toddy as a digestif! I'll be back for more. visited Wahaca Brighton on 20 Jan 2017
