Description

Don't be fooled by the greasy tortilla chips, shop-bought guac and sassy tequila girls that you've experienced in recent years - that's not what Mexican dining is really about. Thankfully, Wahaca have shaken things up, delivering the vibrancy, flavours and freshness of real Mexican grub.

You'll find Wahaca's Brighton outpost on North St. This swanky, 130-cover venue has been designed by award-winning architects Softroom. Step inside and you'll immediately be teleported to the street food markets of Mexico City - expect vibrant colours and funky decor; long sharing tables, low-hanging lights and quirky tile murals.

Thomasina Miers (winner of Masterchef 2005) created Wahaca after she fell in love with the flavours of Mexico during her travels there. Consequently, the menu here delivers authentic flavours and recipes that originate from Mexico's vibrant 'street food' culture. Expect to indulge on the likes 'freshly made guac with lime juice and coriander', 'slow-cooked pork topped with a red onion relish & habanero chillies', and 'sweet potato and feta taquitos'. To wash it all down, there's plenty of classic cocktails, Mexican beers, and of course, a boatload of tequila too!

Food took a long time to arrive and came at different times. I had finished mine before my partner had received hers. Drinks took even longer, had to ask 4 times for my order eventually having to go to the manager to get it made. Got the impression from her that I was being troublesome for asking. Waiters being lazy by trying to make everyone use the app for payment but items were missing. Good food but overall the customer service was below par IMO. visited Wahaca Brighton on 18 Nov 2017

I've eaten in the Brighton Wahaca several times and always loved it. As always the food was great but the waitress this time wasn't up to the usual friendly standard. She seemed distracted, like she wanted to be somewhere else. She kept missing things that we asked for - tortilla nibbles, side salads, glasses of wine. One of my party ordered additional coleslaw which was served to the wrong person, this would have been ok but the other friend took it to be her salad. The side salad was never delivered so the error was picked up until we had finished eating. When we pointed this out to our waitress she grabbed a pot of sad looking lettuce from the kitchen and dumped in front of my friend, no apology. We explained that we had all finished eating and therefore didn't now want the lettuce so she begrudgingly took it away and docked it from our bill....not a good advert for the resturant chain. visited Wahaca Brighton on 04 Nov 2017

We had a fabulous time! I chose Wahaca for the food which I love and the fact that you care about sustainability and Mexican welfare. We drank great margaritas, the food was lovely and great service from our waiter, I even got given some of the plastic spoons you have for children for my two! I also really loved the chilli packet I was given (I thought it was matches then was pleasantly surprised!) It was a great birthday lunch however there is one major element that let you down. Ditch plastic straws in a bid to protect the planet! There are alternative biodegradable straws from vegeware for example. Aside from the clear environmental benefit, there is a strong business case as well. At my party on Saturday 21st there were 20 of us and each of us had 3 or 4 drinks, these drinks had at least 2 straws in them! That's 60 straws in one 2 hour lunch! (note I didn't accept any straws). I am not sure when straws became ubiquitous. "Every single straw that you’ve ever been given in a drink still exists somewhere in the world, and these are things that just contribute to huge piles of waste that just float about in the middle of the ocean.” This was the quote from The Guardian that made me stop and change and decide to campaign against all use of plastic straws. You could actually save money by ditching straws and showing that you care for the environment. On your website you have a Sustainability page; and I quote " building environmentally efficient restaurants". Using straws is not environmentally efficient as it is creating a waste and cost you don't need. Create a shift in the restaurant industry and stop giving straws or if you have to, which there is absolutely no reason that you do, for example the chain who own All Bar One, Wetherspoons group, who use up to 4 million a year! Straws don't rot, I mean it can take 500 years , so it's not a statistic we will ever see the side of! If you have just cause to continue using straws in all of your drinks I would like to know why, and for it to be explained clearly as there is no reason for plastic straws to be used, I just can't understand why large chains such as yourselves don't understand the impact single use plastics such as straws have on the environment. You can make the change! I look forward to hearing from you https://plasticfreepledge.com #strawssuck Claire Sumners #ZeroWasteMaman visited Wahaca Brighton on 21 Oct 2017

Thank you for great service. The perfect choice of restaurant for a group lunch - food was delicious as always, something for everyone (including dairy-free) on the menu and quick turnaround of food from ordering to the table. Itemised billing and the option to pay by the app meant paying at the end was easy too. Would definitely recommend and have been back with another group of friends since. visited Wahaca Brighton on 30 Jun 2017

The service was really bad. There were lots of waitresses walking on a circuit but not serving anyone. After waiting ages, I asked one of them and said can you take my order? Server was friendly enough and food okay but on leaving I felt underwhelmed but our food and I felt frustrated when I saw a sign for Taco Tuesday. This was our first visit to Wahaca, we had no idea of this when we ordered and were frustrated that we didn't have it explained, or any other part of the menu. It felt that we were wading through treacle but we just dived in due to having time constraints. Not sure I would visit again it recommend. visited Wahaca Brighton on 13 Jun 2017

The service was a little hectic to be honest which I understand is a possible risk with such a large group; we had a few dishes and drinks and things arriving that were not ordered by our party. Luckily, the staff rectified this quickly and we were not charged. I would have rated the service more highly however, I was very disappointed to learn that my vegetarian friend had chicken scraps on her food! I immediately pointed it out to the Waitress upon discovering this who confirmed that it was definitely chicken. The Waitress asked if we wanted anything else instead but my friend had already consumed half of the meal before she spotted the chicken pieces so I explained that we were not happy to pay for that particular dish. The Waitress agreed and this was resolved quickly and without fuss however, this is not what I expect when dining out and when ordering Vegetarian food. visited Wahaca Brighton on 03 Jun 2017

I had a lovely birthday meal at Wahaca on a Wednesday night. The restaurant provided a private dining room for 25 guests and ensured everyone was comfortable and had a drink within ten minutes of sitting down. We were a big party, with a variety of dietary needs, including vegans, and the staff ensured we had all the appropriate information and took time to explain the menu. It was a relaxed dining experience, we did not feel rushed despite being there for a few hours, and the staff took time to recommend particular dishes and drinks. The food was incredible, we shared many street food dishes and each one was unique and delicious. I will definitely be returning regularly for a fix of Mexican food and would really recommend this as a great place to hold a birthday meal or any other special occasion. The staff were friendly, the food was great and the atmosphere was just what we wanted, relaxed, fun and friendly. 10/10! visited Wahaca Brighton on 12 Apr 2017

Service a bit patchy. The waiting staff do not appear to have been trained to always look around as they walk the floor. Drinks menus grubby, ours smeared sauce on us. The neighbouring table's also had sauce deposits on it. We were not given replacement napkins so I had to get up and find more when our food came. We ate pork tacos, plantain tacos, a chorizo quesadilla all of which were delicious. I also ordered the deep fried squid 'Winter Special' which was disappointing: presentation unappealing, a plate of overcooked scraps which tasted little of squid but alot of salt with a bland sauce. It was ok but we went elsewhere for coffee. visited Wahaca Brighton on 07 Mar 2017

I have been to Wahaca Brighton a dozen times since it opened last year hoping to recreate the times had when I'd been to the Westfield and Covent Garden locations. I was soooo excited when I heard they were opening in my home town of Brighton but so far my expectations have sadly not been met. Unfortunately, the lively, exciting, fun atmosphere of the London restaurants has failed to travel here and this has marred the experience of going to Wahaca. The staff seem to be in a hurry, stressed, busy chatting and have little time for their customers. I'm not sure if the training they go through in Brighton is the same as other locations but some spark is definitely missing and strangely their attitude makes the food less tasty and the experience less enjoyable. We decided, as a family, that we will give it a miss for a few months and perhaps try again in a few months...... visited Wahaca Brighton on 26 Feb 2017

Once again Brighton is many times worse than the London franchises. Tried to go in the night before - lots of tables free, they told us "at least a 40min wait", so booked for the day after. Arrived and stood waiting to be seated (no queue, just no staff) for nearly 10mins. And although I can see if you go for the market options they might come out separately, there's no real excuse for serving a lukewarm dish of enchiladas so late that the person you are with has paractically finished their lukewarm burrito. The London branches are brilliant, Brighton continues to disappoint, just like the other two items I've been. Sort it out Thomasina! visited Wahaca Brighton on 04 Feb 2017

The food was great! My only comment would be that for some reason all the food for the large sharing platter seem to take priority over all the other meals - mine came out last of all (one of the two dishes was forgotten) and my young son's food came out after most of the other kids and adults received theirs. I appreciate we were a big group (6 adults and 6 kids) and the bill was very kindly reduced for my late dish without even asking. I'd happily recommend it and would come again. visited Wahaca Brighton on 22 Jan 2017
