Our Review Of Blacklock Birmingham: London Steakhouse Comes To The Midlands

A certified B Corp that originated in London, beloved steak and chophouse Blacklock cares deeply about maintaining sustainable practices in all aspects of their restaurant. Their meat is sourced from Cornwall with a farm-to-table approach, and the kitchen team ensures that no part of the animal goes to waste. Having opened their doors in Birmingham this April, venturing into their third UK city, I was eager to try and see if I could taste what they call ‘The Blacklock Way.’

Ambience & We Think Perfect For

  • Atmosphere: the groovy, 70s music immediately made me feel comfortable when I walked into Blacklock. Maintaining the dark charm of the Victorian vicarage they renovated, but with the addition of a wide, open floor-plan, Blacklock perfectly blends an old-school space with a lively and friendly ambience.
  • Perfect For: a casual catch-up with friends.

Menu Highlights

Food⭐⭐⭐

  • Sirloin steak with chop sauce and spring slaw (£29) - cooked just as I like it, the steak has a salty and savoury flavour on its own, magnified by the peppery chop sauce. The slaw was bright and refreshing, serving as a great palate-cleanser.
  • Barbecued cauliflower chop with broccoli and walnut salad (£19) - Blacklock applies the same skill they have with cooking steaks to their vegetable dishes; the cauliflower chop was cooked perfectly. Tender and delightfully charred, the cauliflower was well-paired with a side of creamy broccoli and walnut salad.
  • White chocolate cheesecake with seasonal berries (£8) - as a sweets addict, I may be a bit biased, but this dessert was the crown jewel of our meal. The crumbly base of the cheesecake was sweet and nutty and was a brilliant foundation for the soft cream and tart berry puree.
  • Cheese plate (£8) - we received three seasonal cheeses: a soft brie, a blue cheese, and a mature, hard cheese. They were accompanied by a cracker that served as a good base for each cheese, a sharp onion chutney that went especially well with the hard cheese and the blue cheese, and a few slices of pear that complemented the brie.

Drink: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Midnight Bramble (£10) - pink and covered with a sheet of white foam, this drink was both picture-perfect and delicious. The sweet blackberry paired well with the sharp gin and each sip was complemented by the subtly floral foam.
  • Manny Martini (£10) - although the raspberry and coconut flavour did not come across as strongly as I’d hoped, notes of cherry and a strong base of vodka surely did.

Our Overall Experience At Blacklock Birmingham

DesignMyNight Review Out Of 5⭐⭐⭐

With amazing food, creative drinks, and a cheesecake to die for, Blacklock is the perfect place for a comfortable dinner. The friendly staff made the experience even more enjoyable, from their enthusiastic welcome at the beginning of our meal, to their warm check-ins throughout it. All in all, my friend and I had a great time at Blacklock, and I’m sure that the Birmingham location will soon be just as famous as its London counterparts.
