Inside Sissinghurst Castle: Voted One Of Europe's Most Beautiful Destinations

What Is Sissinghurst Castle’s History?

Sissinghurst started out as a Saxon settlement, then became a medieval manor, and later a large Tudor house that Queen Elizabeth I visited in 1573.

Things took a tougher turn in the 18th century, when parts of the estate were used as a prison to hold thousands of French sailors during the Seven Years’ War. Over time, much of the original building was torn down, leaving just the brick structures and the well-known tower.

The place we see today really began in 1930, when writer Vita Sackville-West and her husband Harold Nicolson took on the run-down site and slowly turned it into the famous garden it is now.

What Is Sissinghurst Castle’s White Garden?

Designed by Vita Sackville-West herself, the White Garden is the most famous part of Sissinghurst Castle Garden. It sticks to a palette of just whites, silvers, and soft greens instead of lots of colour, which makes you notice the shapes and textures more than anything else. You’ll see white roses, foxgloves, delphiniums, lilies, and silvery leaves set against neat green hedges.

The result is one of the UK’s most famous gardens. It has a calm elegance that feels surprisingly dramatic when everything is in full bloom.
