What they say:

Dishoom is kind of a big deal down south. People actually queue up to get the food across the sites in London and Edinburgh, so it seems like it’s time for the Northern Powerhouse to see what all the fuss is about. Inspired by Bombay’s old Irani cafes, the Indian restaurant chain plans to set up in the multi-million pound redevelopment of the old Freemasons Hall – now renamed Manchester Hall. If the food really is as good as they say it is (and queuing while a double-decker bus blows exhaust in your face means it probably has something special), then a Grade II-listed building is a good enough backdrop.

What we say:

You might not associate Indian food with breakfast, but one trip to Dishoom could change your mind. One of the reasons why they’re so popular are their breakfasts, offering up Bombay omelettes, special dishes like kejriwal, which is two fried eggs on chilli cheese toast, and naan rolls filled with sausages, eggs, and bacon. But come for dinner and you can be treated to small plates, such as lamb samosas or prawn koliawada (prawn with tamarind and date chutney), or larger dishes such as biryani, masala and tikka. Wash it down with their Indian cocktails – or sharbats, a special sweet drink, for non-drinkers – and you might be convinced.
