The Wine Window At The Pearl That’s Bringing A Little Slice Of Italy To Manchester

The Pearl's wine window brings a taste of Italy to Manchester.

Wine windows are having a real moment right now, and Manchester's newest addition is just the latest sign that this slice of Italian tradition has well and truly caught on in the UK. Franco Manca gave us a taste of the trend with its own pop-up wine hatch, while elsewhere the novelty has gone one step further with a literal button you can press for an instant spritz.

Now, Manchester is getting in on the excitement, with a new addition to The Pearl is bringing a taste of Italian street culture to its streets.

Manchester's First Wine Window Has Arrived At The Pearl

What Is The Wine Window?

Wine windows, or "buchette del vino" as they're traditionally known, have been a fixture of Italian towns like Florence for centuries. They’re small openings built into the outside walls of buildings, originally used by wine merchants to sell directly to the street without a shop front. They disappeared over the years, but are now enjoying a revival as a charming and low-key way to serve drinks.

The Pearl's version follows the same idea: a compact wooden hatch set into the pub's exterior, offering a quick way to grab a glass without stepping inside.

How Does The Wine Window At The Pearl Work?

The process is simple. A small brass bell sits on the windowsill, and a quick ring lets staff know you're ready to order. From there, the wine is poured and handed straight to you through the gap as you wait on the pavement.

In true wine window tradition, choice is kept short and sweet with just two options chalked up on a little board fixed to the hatch, usually a white and a red.

Where Is Manchester's Wine Window?
