THE OMPHALOS OF LONDON: A guided tour of St Pancras Old Churchyard
- St Pancras Old Churchyard
Description
How old is St Pancras Old Church? The most audacious claim has been AD 314, but the oldest datable bits of the church are only just pre-Norman Conquest. The Victorian workmen did find a small altar-stone, with five crosses cut into it, buried six feet under the tower, which some have dated to AD 625.
ROBERT KINGHAM will lead you round St Pancras Old Churchyard and its environs, in an extract from his longer walk, The Pantheon of Pancras. The old Parish of St Pancras exists on what was the edge of London. It also has attracted those on the edge of society: outsiders who have disrupted time, and space, and the way we see the world. Robert will set out the claim for the Old Churchyard being the omphalos (navel) of London – its spiritual nexus.
