Once dubbed the decade that taste forgot, the 1970s nevertheless gave us DAVID BOWIE and glam, put Bob Marley and reggae firmly on the mainstream musical map and spawned the foul-mouthed but thrilling monster that was punk rock.
Gifted his sobriquet when teenage pal Sid Vicious drunkenly slurred his real name, John Wardle, JAH WOBBLE first met John Lydon aka Johnny Rotten at London’s Kingsway College in 1974. He would go onto provide Lydon’s post-Sex Pistol’s band, Public Image Limited, with its foundation-rattling bass lines on their first two albums, First Issue and Metal Box, before forging a successful career as a solo artist and collaborating with everyone from Sinéad O’Connor to Brian Eno.
MALCOLM GARRETT was a pivotal figure on Manchester’s punk scene, designing record sleeves for Buzzcocks and Magazine and later providing Duran Duran with the cover of their classic album Rio.
Together, in conversation with the award-winning author Travis Elborough, they’ll be reflecting on a period as famed for its flared trousers and three day weeks as its White Riots and Orgasm Addicts.
Copies of Wobble’s newly published 'Dark Luminosity: Memoirs of a Geezer', the Expanded Edition, will be available for sale on the night.
