Hugh Hefner started Playboy magazine in 1953 with a loan from his mother. The first edition featured unauthorised nude photos of Marilyn Monroe. It was an instant success, selling 50,000 copies. The magazine, its spin-off Playboy clubs and Playboy bunnies and its founder’s flamboyant lifestyle became emblematic of the sexual revolution of the 1960s.
In 2012 Hefner married this third wife, Crystal Harris, who like many of his previous paramours was a former Playmate of the Month in the magazine and was 60 years his junior. Their marriage lasted until Hefner’s death in 2017 at the age of 91, just a month before the #MeToo movement was born.
Crystal Hefner will be in conversation with author and journalist Pandora Harris. She will tell us of life inside the Playboy Mansion, the objectification and misogyny she faced and how her young adulthood was stolen, furnishing a rare insight into Hugh Hefner’s final days.

A former editor at The Sunday Times Style magazine, she has written for publications including The Guardian, Vogue, House & Garden, The Cut, Elle, Grazia, GQ and The Evening Standard and is the author of the best-selling essay collection, How Do We Know We’re Doing It Right? which came out in 2020 and editor of the anthology, What Writers Read: 35 Writers On Their Favourite Book, which came out in 2022, with all proceeds going to The National Literacy Trust. She also writes a bi-monthly newsletter for Substack, called Books + Bits.
