MYSTERIES OF THE NECROPOLIS

A guided tour of the Egyptian funerary artefacts at the Petrie Museum with Tracey Golding
This event is part of the London Month of the Dead

The Petrie Museum, based on the personal collection of Egyptologist William Flinders Petrie, who taught Howard Carter, is one of the greatest collections of Egyptian and Sudanese archaeology in the world,. It now houses over 80,000 objects, showing the development of Egyptian culture, science and daily life from prehistoric to Roman times.

The museum’s collection of papyrus includes the world’s oldest surviving wills and the first known medical text (on gynaecology) as well as the only veterinary records known from ancient Egypt (no doubt on cat care). It also boasts the world’s largest collection of Roman period mummy portraits.

This tour will reveal the hidden narratives behind a range of ancient Egyptian funerary artefacts including an introduction to the museum's Egyptian book of the Dead and its fifth dynasty bead net funerary dress.
