Ancient Egyptian mummies are synonymous in the popular imagination with curses, magic spells and retribution from beyond the grave. The myth of the vengeful mummy, its supernatural wrath provoked by an incursion into its tomb, derive from a series of novels written by women in Victorian times, including Louisa May Alcott (author of Little Women). But do these lumbering bandaged monsters bear any relation to the real occupants of Egyptian sarcophagi?
Campbell Price’s talk will explore why we are so fascinated with the ancient Egyptian dead and whether it reveals more about our own anxieties and prejudices than it informs us about ancient Egypt.

Dr Campbell Price
Dr Campbell Price is Curator of Egypt and Sudan at Manchester Museum, University of Manchester, one of the UK’s largest Egyptology collections. He undertook his BA, MA, and PhD in Egyptology at the University of Liverpool, where he is now an Honorary Research Fellow. He is the co-editor of 'Mummies, Magic and Medicine in Ancient Egypt', and author of 'Pocket Museum: Ancient Egypt' (2018) and 'Golden Mummies of Egypt' (forthcoming)

2. Tickets are issued subject to the rules and regulations of the venue.
3. Please check your tickets, as mistakes cannot always be rectified.
4. Occasionally, events are cancelled or postponed by the promoter, team, performer or venue for a variety of reasons. If the event is cancelled, please contact us for information on receiving a refund from the responsible party. If the event was moved or rescheduled, the venue or promoter may set refund limitations. It is your responsibility to ascertain the date and time of any rearranged event.
5. The venue reserves the right to refuse admission and may on occasion have to conduct security searches to ensure the safety of the patrons.
6. Every effort to admit latecomers will be made at a suitable break in the event, but admission cannot always be guaranteed.
7. We regret that tickets cannot be exchanged or refunded after purchase.
