GIVING UP THE GHOST
The Psychology of Phantoms and Hauntings
A Salon in the Cemetery with Chris French
A part of the London Month of the Dead
At the Dissenters Chapel, Ladbroke Grove, Kensal Green Cemetery
A recent opinion poll showed that a third of Britons believe in ghosts (more than profess to be religious) and 10% believe they have been in contact with the dead. Leading skeptic Chris French will present the case for the normal over the paranormal. His talk will consider the numerous factors that may lead people to believe that they have had a supernatural encounter, including hoaxes, misinterpretation of natural phenomena, hallucinatory experiences and the possible role of complex electromagnetic fields and infrasound, photographic evidence, electronic voice phenomenon, and the influence of the media.
PROFESSOR CHRIS FRENCH
Professor Chris French is Head of the Anomalistic Psychology Research Unit in the Psychology Department at Goldsmiths, University of London. He is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society and of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry, as well as being a Patron of the British Humanist Association. He has published over 150 articles and chapters covering a wide range of topics within psychology. For more than a decade he has edited The Skeptic magazine.
