A Fourth of July special

The 1970s in New York City were marked by rampant crime, urban decay, and staggering local government debt. In fact, when President Gerald Ford refused a federal bailout in October 1975, The New York Daily News famously declared, "Ford to City, Drop Dead, New York."

Despite the city's bleak reputation and sky-high rates of murder and mugging, a silver lining emerged in the form of cheap rents and abandoned buildings that provided a haven for a colorful cast of creative oddballs and outsiders. Downtown lofts, bars, galleries, and clubs like Max's and CBGB's became hotbeds of artistic experimentation, helping to incubate a musical revolution that would go down in history as punk.

Join us for an electrifying conversation between three legendary authors, Gary Lachman, Nina Antonia and Travis Elborough, as they delve into the gritty, glittering world of New York City in the 1970s.From the birth of the CBGBs punk scene to the rise of Studio 54, and everything in between, Lachman and Antonia will provide a unique perspective on the cultural upheavals that transformed New York in the 1970s.

Nina Antonia
Nina Antonia is the author of Too Much Too Soon, the definitive account of the life and high times of glam-proto-punk legends, The New York Dolls, Her peerless official biography of the group’s brilliant but self-destructive lead guitarist, Johnny Thunders: In Cold Blood, has just been republished in a new updated edition.

Gary 'Valentine' Lachman
Gary Lachman aka Gary Valentine was the bass player in Blondie who penned such punk-pop classics as I'm Always Touched By Your Presence, Dear for the group before leaving on Independence Day in 1977 to found his own band and forge a new career as a writer and becoming one of the world’s foremost authorities on the occult and esoteric thought.

Travis Elborough
Travis Elborough is a British author and cultural commentator, known for his works on social history, popular culture and design. He has authored several critically acclaimed books including "The Bus We Loved: London's Affair with the Routemaster" and "Atlas of Improbable Places: A Journey to the World's Most Unusual Corners".

I'm writing this on behalf of Artists for Gaza. We did not consent for this listing. The information is outdated and the ticket link is not going to the right platform. Our ticket sale is £35 and not £50 so please go to our website www.artistsforgaza.org.uk to get your cheaper ticket. We have contacted Design My Night to flag this.

While the tour by Dr Green was very well presented and interesting, the little scenes in between were incredibly poorly planned and rehearsed, to comical effect, but below expectations at this price point. We were also expecting more than one small cup of hot chocolate halfway through the freezing cold tour, as the ticket cost of £35 is definitely on the high side for a packed group like this. We still enjoyed the tour itself, but expected a lot more.
