Psychedelic agents are currently undergoing a remarkable renaissance, but this time not as illicit mind-expanding substances associated with the counterculture of the 1960s. Instead, they are being explored as “breakthrough therapy” for mental illnesses such as major depressive disorder, severe anxiety, and substance abuse. These once fringe therapeutics have now moved into the mainstream of medical research.
Despite the growing interest, our understanding of these substances remains somewhat limited and there is a boundary to what science alone can uncover about their mechanisms of action. To truly grasp their potential, we must radically expand our perspective on them. Neuropsychologist Andy Mitchell embarked on a personal investigation, experimenting with ten different drugs in diverse settings. From a neuroimaging lab in London to the Colombian Amazon and even his friend’s basement kitchen in Silicon Valley, he sought to gain insights into their effects.
In this talk, Mitchell will share his firsthand experiences and shed light on the future prospects of using these drugs as therapeutic aids in clinical settings. By delving into this uncharted territory, we may pave the way for a more comprehensive comprehension of these intriguing psychedelic substances and unlock their potential to transform mental health treatment.
