A Live, Illustrated Zoom Talk with Dr Caroline Pennock
This lecture will take place virtually, via Zoom. Attendees may request a video recording after the lecture takes place by emailing proof of purchase to info@acuriousinvitation.com
From around 1350, the Aztec civilisation flourished in the basin of Central Mexico until the arrival of Cortés in 1521 The Aztec capital city, Tenochitlan, was admired by the Spanish conquistadors for its stylish architecture, bustling marketplace and spotless symmetrical streets. But despite the evident sophistication of this vibrant culture, European observers were horrified by the widespread practice of human sacrifice.
The Aztecs had a particularly gory mythology and believed that death was integral to the perpetuation of life. Coronations, temple inaugurations and other religious festivities would require mass sacrifices, amounting to many thousands of human victims a year. Priests engaged in self-mutilation and some scholars believe that cannibalism was also practised by the Aztec aristocracy.
In this talk, Caroline Pennock, the UK’s only Aztec historian, will attempt to reconcile the Aztecs’ terrifying religious violence with their undoubted civilisation and humanity.
