At this candlelit theremin concert, Lydia Kavina, a protégée of Leon Theremin himself and a pre-eminent theremin virtuoso, will take the stage. Her performance is set to embody the reflective and haunting melodies of the holiday season, offering a unique lens through which to experience this time of year. It's a reminder of the deeper, more poignant elements of Christmas, set to the haunting strains of the theremin.

As Christmas and New Year draw the year to a close, they usher in a period of introspection, often tinged with a contemplation of life's fleeting nature and our own mortality. This reflective mood finds expression in literature and music, particularly in certain traditional Christmas songs that resonate with sombre or spectral tones. These melodies, steeped in longing, solitude, and introspection, infuse the holiday atmosphere with a melancholic, sometimes eerie quality.

In the realm of musical instruments, the theremin stands out for its ability to evoke the stark, desolate landscapes of winter. Its sound is not only eerie and otherworldly but also created through a mesmerising dance of the player's hands in the air, reminiscent of a shaman's ritualistic movements.

Lydia Kavina

Lydia Kavina was born in Moscow and began studying the theremin at the age of 9 under the direction of Léon Theremin himself, who was first cousin of her grandfather. She is one of the world’s leading theremin virtuosos and has helped engender the instrument’s renaissance over recent years. She has worked with composers such as Danny Elfman and Howard Shore.

Thomas Ang
Thomas studied at the Royal Academy of Music with Hamish Milne and Diana Ketler, and at the Guildhall School with Andrew West and Eugene Asti. He has won prizes for his performances of Beethoven, Frederick Delius, Arthur Bliss, and the contemporary piano repertoire, and has been praised for his thoughtful and critical programming and excellent technique. He has also earned recognition as a specialist in the music of Nikolai Kapustin, having played and conducted premieres of his compositions in the UK, US, Singapore, and Australia.

Awful. Psychic Stevie failed to contact anyone. Which is probably why he cut the show short. It was the hammiest performance I’ve seen. It was like a comedy sketch. Waste of time. Although the setting was beautiful and atmospheric.

Hunt is really good. So fascinating and engaging. I look forward to seeing him again too. So spooky because he has spoken to so many school shooters and his research tells me it can happen anytime.
