RAIBLE / GRADISCHNIG QUINTET "MUSIC OF ELMO HOPE"
As the opener to the week long BopFest Jazz Festival, this gig marks the second visit to the UK from this joint UK/European collaborative project. The programme features the compositions of the great American bebop pianist Elmo Hope (1923-67) as a springboard for original interpretations of his music, which the band have been developing and performing regularly around Europe since 2014. Elmo Hope, a friend and contemporary of Bud Powell, was a prodigious recording artist, working with musicians such as Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, Harold Land and Clifford Brown. There is an extensive catalogue of original compositions to his name covering a very broad stylistic palette, that have only recently begun to be explored by jazz musicians today.
Much of the programme is arranged for the quintet by German pianist Claus Raible, who has performed with artists such as Art Farmer and Mark Murphy. The challenging compositions deliver a hard swinging set fronted by the band's Austrian co-leader Herwig Gradischnig, member of the Vienna Art Orchestra, and foremost UK trumpeter Steve Fishwick, whose performing credits include Cedar Walton, Peter Washington, the NDR Big Band, Anita O'Day & Bob Martin.
Steve Fishwick – Trumpet
Herwig Gradischnig – Tenor Sax
Claus Raible – Piano
Giorgios Antoniou – Double Bass
Matt Home – Drums
The lineup is completed by Switzerland based double bassist Giorgos Antoniou, who forms part of US pianist Benny Green's European rhythm section, and London based drummer Matt Home who performs with US guitarist Nate Najar and singer Claire Martin.
Support tonight comes from up-and-coming young guitarist Will Arnold-Forster's Duo, who will be performing in the club's restaurant during dinner before the main act, with food available from 6pm until 7.50pm.
