There's A Hot New Mexican Spot In Shoreditch: Here's How Our Visit Went

I'll be honest, sometimes I won't consider dinner, or going out unless it's for Mexican food. And I know I'm not alone.

That's why on being invited to the new Shoreditch Santo Remedio, I had to take someone who loves it just as much as I do, our website's Managing Editor.

Now that the company had been settled on, we settled into the dining space. Quiet in the early evening before local diners picked up their coats and headed out for dinner after a day of it, it gave us a chance to admire interiors that sing true to the restaurant's name. Eclectic? Check. Colourful? Check. Plants galore? Santo Remedio promises a dining room that's leafy and lively, echoing the owners Edson and Natalie's sentiment to stay true to authentic Mexican taquerias.

In staying true to Mexico? Dishes are classic, and ingredients are speciality, making sure that even cooking techniques are traditional. Let's be honest, if it ain't broke? You shouldn't need to fix it.

Our table became a medley of colour as we opted to share everything. Which is fair, as there might have been an argument from me otherwise. Pretty and petite piles of tuna tostada (£14.50) started the show, with fresh sashimi-grade fish being supported by a star accompaniment of sesame, chipotle mayonnaise and smashed avocado. A dish for the memory bank. Following that? Baja tacos (a favourite at £9, complete with morita mayo and slaw) alongside a plate of baby potato flautas (£8.50). The flautas had me at hello thanks to a uniquely neon avocado salsa and pickled onion topping that graciously complimented the crispy rolled tacos, stuffed with baby potatoes.

A roaring success across all plates.

Santo Remedio promises to scatter colour and flavour all over your dining table.

Not forgetting the drinks on our visits, we of course gave the margarita menu a run for its money (it's a humble menu, but a good'un). I'm a bit of a lush for hibiscus, so chose their hibiscus margarita (£10) as my go-to for the night, while Anisah opted to put the classic to the test. With homemade hibiscus cordial, El Jimador blanco bringing the fire and lime and lemon juice the bite, the mix was fresh, friendly and the perfect level of sharpness.

The DesignMyNight Digest

Take it from someone who has visited the London Bridge site on multiple occasions? Santo Remedio's new Shoreditch spot is not to be scoffed at. Aside from being the kind of pretty I aspire to be, Santo Remedio hasn't let the charm and friendliness of their existing site go, still promising an authentic taqueria taste that keeps their brand hot.

💰 The damage: Around £50 for two cocktails and three plates.

📍  The location: 55 Great Eastern St, London EC2A 3HP.

👌 Perfect for: those of you happy to share food.

⭐ Need to know: we can't be friends if you're not ordering the Baja tacos.
