Grand Union Wandsworth - Cocktail Bar Review

A bit off the beaten track, tucked away quietly in Wandsworth, I thought I’d venture away from the crowds of ‘The Ship’ and head down to the Grand Union on a sunny Sunday to see what the much hyped new menu had to offer.

The Venue

I obviously wasn’t the only person who had decided to check out Grand Union Wandsworth on a Sunday afternoon; known for their fantastic outside spaces, the garden did not disappoint! There is a huge bar, built around a tree in the garden, with plenty of terraces, decking and more picnic tables than you can shake a stick at. All these features make this space a must for any beer garden fan! The interior looked comfortable and plush, but had been cleared out somewhat to allow easy thoroughfare to the garden. Come cooler days, I’m sure it’ll be an equally comfortable space to sit, relax and drink.

The Atmosphere and Clientele

Once you’ve made your way through the doors of this venue you’re greeted instantly by the hallmark of south west London drinking establishments… a couple of brilliant Australian bar staff, serving colourful cocktails and good value beers. We were joined in the garden by couples catching up over cocktails, football teams having a few post game drinks and a few groups of girls warming up for their big night out. There’s no airs and graces, no pretentiousness here, just lots of people, out for a few fun drinks in an attractive chilled out spot.

The Food and Drinks

Like the clientele of the bar, there’s no pretence with the food and drink menus either. Your cocktails aren’t going to be served in a teacup or twirled around your bartenders head, but if you want a nice crisp fruity cocktail, you’ll find it at Grand Union Wandsworth. There’s a good selection of beers which were served beautifully chilled and were very fresh tasting! This bar is much better than a few of the other establishments in the area where drinks can sometimes come a bit flat or metallic tasting!

Food-wise, we opted for a couple of burgers from a very solid menu, and they were great. I can’t recommend the Camembert bites enough either… they could’ve brought 3 or 4 plates of them out and I’d have wanted more!

The outdoor beach huts at Grand Union are a great talking point!

Summary

If you’re venturing from outside of your local area, Grand Union Wandsworth is worth a visit for sure, if only for its strong food menu and tasty cocktails! Plus if the sun is out and you can make it outside there’s no better alfresco drinking spot for miles around!
