Yer Tiz Lovers! Midnight Apothecary 2017 kicks off on Saturday 14 January with an ancient appley affair. Gather round the fire and get the heart pumping for Wassailing, the traditional old Twelfth Night celebration. It's a chance to warm your cockles, aided by some cider-based concoctions (and other heart warming cocktails). Non-alcoholic versions always on hand for the serene and sanctimonious.

This ancient ceremony blesses the fruit trees in anticipation of the bountiful new season. For the fifth consecutive year, we will process to the apple tree in the lower garden with Wassail and sing some Wassail carols led by the Butler of the Ceremony and starring the Wassail Queen, alongside the amazing folk musicians GreenTrad who hail from down the river in Greenwich. Bring lanterns and torches to read the songsheet. Delicious hot food will be available and of course the usual toasted marshmallows round the campfire. The  garden will be decked with giant flares alongside a roaring firepit to toast your complimentary toasted marshmallows. Hot Deluxe Wassail Punch will be available outside (and hot mulled apple juice) while down the Grand Staircase and into Brunel's vast Underground Chamber you will be able to enjoy our beautifully themed Wassail cocktails at our full cocktail bar alongside more music from GreenTrad.   Amazingly delicious hot food will be available in the Engine House from Pan.

Wassail gets its name from the Old English term "waes hael" meaning "be well". The Saxon response is "drink hael" meaning "drink and be healthy". What more could you want from a crisp winter's evening than to gather round the fire when nights are at their shortest? Join us for another magical evening.

Yes, I did go downstairs, and did a little jig with my friends but most space was occupied by chairs. So my suggesgion is to leave a big space in the middle for dancing. We left at 10. Marian C visited Brunel Museum Rooftop Garden on 14 Jan 2017

Great stuff. Thought there might be more music. Left a bit early though so I might have missed anything else that happened after the marshmallows in the garden. A beautiful space & the drinks were really great. Would go again. Dan visited Brunel Museum Rooftop Garden on 14 Jan 2017

Hi Dan, really glad you enjoyed the space and drinks but so sad you missed all the music. As the Butler of the Feast explained we had 13 musicians leading dancing and merriment in the Underground Chamber till 10pm. Hope you can join us for another event soon.

Fantastic and magical evening. Great music, food, drink and use of spaces. Loved the fire and marshmallows. Maybe next time allow more dancing space and have a mini wassailing parade to the riverbank. Marian C visited Brunel Museum Rooftop Garden on 14 Jan 2017

HI Marian, so pleased you enjoyed the evening. Were you able to join us down in the Underground Chamber after the ceremony - the musicians led dancing down there until closing time.

excellent cocktails and setting in the chamber. Couldn't see the ceremony under the tree as too large a crowd. Perhaps arrange standing so that everyone gets a view next year. No marshmallows left by the time we went to the garden but that's life! Food was really tasty. Overall - lovely Gill visited Brunel Museum Rooftop Garden on 14 Jan 2017

Hi Gill, I'm glad you had a lovely evening but sorry you couldn't see the ceremony. Next year we will raise the stage to make sure people can see the ceremony more clearly. I checked with the Marshmallow Tzar in the garden and he assured me the garden was burgeoning with marshmallows - its a crime in our book to run out of them! Next time ask if the marshmallow pot is empty and we will fill it up instantly.
