Join us in partnership with The Royal Society of Literature for two events with poet and novelist Anne Michaels. The second event will be a in conversation between Anne Michaels and Claire Messud. Chairing the conversation is the award-winning and international best-selling Turkish-British novelist Elif Shafak.
This event will take place in our Historic Great Room.
A conversation between two of contemporary literatures best and most beloved writers. Claire Messud’s This Strange and Eventful History and Anne Michaels’, Held are both hotly tipped and keenly anticipated books by every major publication. Each lyrically and breathtakingly offers narratives of huge historical scope, traversing borders, landscapes and generations. Each begins in a world war, tracing the fragments created in those moments, which haunt the generations that follow.
About Claire Messud
Claire is the author of six works of fiction including, The Emperor's Children, names New York Time, Los Angeles Times and Washington Post' Best Book of the Year, When the World Was Steady finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award, The Hunters and The Burning Girl. She is a recipient of Guggenheim and Radcliffe Fellowships and the Strauss Living Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
About Anne Michaels
Anne is a novelist and poet. Her books are translated into more than fifty languages and have won multiple awards, including the Orange Prize, The Guardian Fiction Prize and the Lannan Award for Fiction. She is a Guggenheim Fellow, and has served and Toronto's Poet Laureate. Her Novel Fugitive Places was adapted as a feature film. He most recent books include All We Saw, Infinite Gradation and Railtracks co-written with John Berger. In 2020, her novel Fugitive Places was chosen as one of the BBC's 100 Novels that Shaped the World.
About Elif Shafak
Elif is a novelist, essayist, political scientist, activist and author of 19 books, which have been translated into 57 languages. Her latest novel, The Island of Missing Trees, was shortlisted for the Costa Award, British Book Awards, RSL Ondaatje Prize and Women's Prize for Fiction. The Forty Rules of Love was chosen by BBC among the 100 Novels that shaped our world. Shafak is a Fellow and Vice President of the Royal Society of Literature and has been chosen among BBC's 100 most inspiring and influential women.

RSA House has been home to the RSA (Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufacture and Commerce) and its 30,000 strong fellowship since 1774 as well as some of the greatest thinkers and social activists of the past 200 years. Some notable names of past and present fellows you might recognise include Charles Dickens, Dame Judi Dench, Sir David Attenborough and Professor Steven Hawking.
The Coffee House is open to the public Mon-Fri from 8:30am. We host ticketed event throughout the house regularly and there is something for everyone. Everyone is welcome.

5. The venue reserves the right to refuse admission and may on occasion have to conduct security searches to ensure the safety of the patrons.

7. We regret that tickets cannot be exchanged or refunded after purchase.
8. Tickets are sold subject to the venue or promoter's right to alter or vary the programme due to events or circumstances beyond its control without being obliged to refund monies or exchange tickets.
9. If this ticket is re-sold or transferred for profit or commercial gain by anyone other than the promoter, venue management, DesignMyNight or one of their authorised sub-agents, it will become voidable and the holder may be
