Gem Bar Soho - London Bar Review

Gem bar in Soho is a welcoming and vibrant bar buzzing with a cool and classy vibe and is versatile enough for both late night partying and more intimate after work drinks.

The Venue

On arrival, we were pleasantly surprised to find Gem bar is a large and alluringly atmospheric venue, boasting an impressive interior and large wooden bar. Its combination of rustic charm with contemporary modern red lighting, leather seating and designer wallpaper was warm and welcoming, and we felt comfortable instantly.

Gem Bar Soho

Gem is a classy, but affordable bar in the West End

We were seated in the centre of the upstairs bar; a spot that gave us a great view across the floor, and provided close access the basement dance area. While Gem bar upstairs is a sophisticated lounge bar great for chilling with friends over a pitcher or bottle of Rose, in the basement there is a buzzing scene of disco lighting, DJs playing commercial tunes, a large dance floor and another impressive bar.

The Food and Drinks

Our waitress was friendly, albeit a bit rushed when taking our order, but she delighted us with a fancy sharing platter and woowoo pitcher that were served up quickly and presented expertly. The sharing platter was a mixture of ribs, onion rings, tortilla chips, dips and toasted breads, and although it was a bit fussy to eat – not the best when you’re trying to look good – it was definitely worth the messy fingers. Other options on the drinks and nibbles menu include burgers, hotdogs and calamari, which are all reasonably priced and perfect accompaniments to an indulgent cocktail.

Doubling up an after work paradise as well as a night club sets Gem apart from its competition

As for the drinks selection we were spoiled for choice, and each cocktail is made with admirable precision and care. We tucked into a couple of cocktails, but the woowoo pitcher was a highlight for me. I’ve never been a massive fan but I can honestly say Gem bar’s version has changed my mind. Subtle yet flavoursome and not overflowing with ice.

Ambience and Clientele

Gem Bar exudes a classy and energetic vibe mixed with a touch of lounge bar comfort and intimacy. The clientele is a diverse range of regular city-goers and eager nightlife enthusiasts. It’s a sociable environment, where it’s easy to meet new people, but you can still tuck yourself away at a private table or booth.

The staff are friendly and approachable, and they are very attentive in terms of keeping the table clean and ensuring you are satisfied with your order. Security guards are well placed but not invasive and are very friendly and accommodating.

Summary

Gem bar is an intimate lounge bar and bustling nightclub scene all in one. Great for getting together with a group of mates for an intimate catch up over a bottle of wine or cocktail pitcher, followed by an all-nighter in the basement clubbing arena.
