CLEVELAND WATKISS PRESENTS THE GREAT JAMAICAN SONGBOOK
Multi award-winning vocalist, actor and composer Cleveland Watkiss MBE joins us for the first time to explore Jamaica’s long history of pioneering musical sounds, including mento, reggae, ska and more. With classic tracks from legendary artists including Gregory Isaacs, Dennis Brown and Delroy Wilson, The Great Jamaican Songbook tells poignant stories about the times and the culture, with a deep and infectious rhythm.
Join Cleveland Watkiss as he presents a personal project exploring the songs that connect him to his Jamaican roots.
Watkiss will delve into Jamaica’s long history of pioneering musical sounds, from Mento, Ska, Reggae, Dub, Roots and way beyond.
He’ll also be celebrating many of its internationally celebrated musicians, who spawned from the great musical institution The Alpha Boys School, under the tutelage of (The Nun) Sister Mary Ignatius Davis.
With many strings to his bow including DJ, educator and founder of Black Association for Arts UK, Cleveland Watkiss has collaborated with musical luminaries ranging from Stevie Wonder, Bjork and Bob Dylan to the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the London Community Gospel Choir. Having studied at the London School of Singing and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Cleveland was also one of the co-founders of the vastly influential Jazz Warriors big band, as well as being voted best vocalist for three consecutive years at the Wire/Guardian Jazz Awards

ABOUT OUR FOOD:
Sourcing the greatest grass-fed Aberdeenshire beef is crucial to Boisdale but equally so is the attention to detail involved in the dry ageing and the actual cutting. All the beef supplied to Boisdale is from the very best certified beef suckler herds of Aberdeenshire Boisdale is wild about game and all manner of chase and fowl find their way to the tables, be it red grouse – the ultimate game bird uniquely indigenous to Scotland and northern England or Highland venison, the regulars’ favourite served hot smoked with a black truffle dressing. Wild fowl, hare, partridge – all can be enjoyed in the Boisdale restaurants when in season.
Gourmets can also delight in arguably the best beef in the world: 28-40 day matured purebred dry aged Aberdeenshire steak as well as other remarkable meat that includes Highland Blackface Lamb.
The most famous Scottish export after whisky - smoked salmon - comes to Boisdale from award-winning, small family-owned farms and smokehouses. Other fish specialities include the diver-gathered Orkney King scallops, Loch Ryan native oysters, organic West Minch salmon from South Uist, sweet dill-pickled herring from the Summer Isles, as well as abundant varieties of other seafood.
