Afro-Latin jazz quintet draw influences from cultures across Africa, South America and beyond
London based Afro-Latin jazz quintet Waaju believe in highlighting the world's connection through less familiar creative collaboration. Drawing influence from a number of cultures across Africa, South America & beyond, the band delves deeper to leave behind preconception & promote forces largely unexplored in a Western context. Citing the rich history of Malian music as a centrepiece, Waaju presents the vision of drummer & percussionist Ben Brown which draws from the exceptional spirit of the likes of Ali Farka Toure, Oumou Sangare, Tinariwen & Baba Sissoko. Waaju is a project that never stands still, its members playing in several other ensembles (Caravela, Bahla, Jordan Rakei, and Ashley Henry to name a few), meaning they cherish each time they get to come together to play.
Playing music from their highly critically acclaimed 2018 album, "Waaju" (Olindo Records), alongside a selection of new material from their upcoming album set to be released in 2020, join us for an evening of original, new and experimental music of the highest quality from this exceptional young collective.
Waaju is: Sam Rapley - tenor saxophone Tal Janes - guitar Joe Downard - bass Ernesto Marichales - percussion Ben Brown - drums, percussion
