Sex, Women & Religion: An Unholy Mix?

- Upper House
Description
Sometimes it’s hard to be a woman - and being a sexual woman is even harder. Add a system of religious belief into the mix, and it becomes almost impossible for a woman to follow, or simply to accept, her own sexual feelings and desires.
Join us for our April panel, when we’ll go to the heart of the matter by exploring the relationship that exists between formal religion, and female sexuality. Through the ages and around the world, our systems of belief have shaped our collective sense of what it means to be a sexual woman. All too often, our bodies have been equated with notions of sin, corruption and shame, and our sexual behaviours - from who we can sleep with, to when we can do it and which sex acts we can enjoy - have been dictated not by our own desires, but by the belief system in which we are raised.
When we speak up and take ownership of our own sexuality, we stand out from the crowd. The easiest choice is often to suppress our sexual wants and needs, because we know that when we speak out about them, we risk censure, negative attention or worse. We will hear from four of women who will speak frankly about how their Muslim, Hindu and Christian faiths have impacted on their sexual identities, sharing what it has meant for them to be sexual women living in a religious society, and how they have managed to reconcile their desires with their beliefs.
