The London Library opened its doors for the first time on 3 May 1841 and celebrates its 175th anniversary this year. The Library is unique and has remained at the heart of literary London over three consecutive centuries. Using institutional archival records and books from the Library’s million strong book collection Helen O’Neill takes us on whirlwind journey through 175 years of London Library life, in the home of its founder, Thomas Carlyle. Library members including Dickens, Darwin, Tennyson, George Eliot, Bram Stoker, the Pre-Raphaelites, the Bloomsbury set, Siegfried Sassoon, Virginia Woolf, T.S. Eliot and E.M. Forster will all make appearances as Helen paints an absorbing picture of literary endeavour through the history of one extraordinary library.

Helen O’Neill

Helen O’Neill is the Archive, Heritage & Development Librarian at the London Library where she has worked for 10 years. Her PhD research, using institutional records and the Library’s book collections, is an examination of the relationship between the Library and key players in British intellectual history.
