Best Cocktail Bar 2014/15 - DesignMyNight Awards

With Retro Quiz Nights, Film Clubs and a Gin Parlour to boot, jump down the rabbit hole and visit the ever-so-tempting Jekyll and Hyde in Steelhouse Lane.

From the Alice in Wonderland themed courtyard out back to their sophisticated Victorian Parlour upstairs, the bar is cool and quirky, primed for gin-guzzlers and cocktail-lovers alike. Importantly it is probably one of the best spots for a relaxed weekday drink in Birmingham . This unique bar is the place for those looking to push the boat out a bit on their next night out in Birmingham, thanks to their inventive cocktails and unique, period style.

If it's even quirkier cocktails you're looking for, head upstairs to the Parlour after 5pm on a Friday and Saturday night for your fill of Victorian themed decor, antiquarian charm and delectable cocktails. Inspired by none other than the bar's name itself, Saturday nights in Birmingham are home to Dr.Jekyll's Potion, a feisty evening of Jazz Soul and Motown tracks from the best of Birmingham's soulful DJs.

Went to Jekyll & Hyde Gin Parlour at 7 on Friday 30th Sept. Had a beer in the downstairs bar first and thought it an excellent pub. A bit frayed around the edges, so to speak, but good beer, great atmosphere. Unfortunately that didn't carry up to the Gin Parlour. Maybe it was too early but it was dark, no atmosphere and the Gin selections were a little less than expected, The drinks menu seemed unadventurous. I had the Jenever Flight with a steam beer, I definitely do not recommend this, the beer was fine but other than that it was simply strong alcohol with little difference between the 3 offerings. Overall, disappointing. visited The Jekyll and Hyde on 29 Sep 2017

For a Saturday night the Gin bar was quite quiet even though the bar downstairs was packed. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience and would thoroughly recommend it. However, we came away feeling that the concept needs a little tweaking to make it even better: Although showing the film "Silent Movie" fitted with the decor it deadened the atmosphere, far better would be to play really lively jazz and swing music from the period. Make the place really bounce. The knowledgeable staff worked hard to make everyone welcome but it was a little invasive although very well intentioned. It just needs to be reined back a touch. The drinks were excellent but the menu was not clear and the staff were having to explain to each new customer what each drink is. We had the Spanish gin taster which was three different gins served separately with ice. The booking of tables is not normal at a bar. Some people were turned away because tables were booked for later in the night. The empty tables drain the atmosphere. Booking is good but find a way of making it more dynamic, perhaps with start and end times. I only write these comments because we think this place could be amazing. At the moment it is still worth a visit as a stylish way to start a night out. . visited The Jekyll and Hyde on 16 Sep 2017

When we arrived we weren't let in on time for our cocktail masterclass and no one said hello to us, which was a shame, but once we were in the hosts made up for it with their fantastic patter. We had a really good time for my mother's hen do and all felt that the experience was good value for money. visited The Jekyll and Hyde on 16 Sep 2017

Booked the Gin parlour for a small hen party for some ladies who have a love of all things gin as didn't want a tacky broad street experience, it was great atmosphere, great music, great film The Artist playing on big screen in the background, great cocktails, we even had a bath of gin to share, lovely decor in the parlour, made to feel vey welcome, even moved downstairs to continue our evening, fantastic sweetie jar cocktails at two for nine pounds and a fabulous Dj that played a great mix of music that ranged from Fleetwood mac to the smiths and Stevie wonder, a great evening in a fabulous venue, thank you. visited The Jekyll and Hyde on 09 Sep 2017

The gin masterclass was great fun and would highly recommend it. Only criticism is that it started 20mins late but still finished on time. We had booked a table for a meal. With 2vegetarians in the party the food options were limited (only one option!!!). We were offered a plate of vegetables as an alternative - declined and left. Come on Jeckyl and Hyde....if you can offer 3choices to meat/fish eaters why not 3 options to vegetarians. It would also help if you made the menus much clearer on the website-I had no idea that the one I looked at (and booked because of) was not available after 5pm!!!!! Only 2 stars because of the disappointing end to the evening. visited The Jekyll and Hyde on 03 Jun 2017

Confusion with booking system that we thought there were vegan options available, however when we arrived we were told that was for a different section of the restaurant. Fortunately the chef was able to concoct something for my vegan friend. The food and drinks were over priced for the amount and quality of the dishes however it was generally tasty. The menu was very limited. Room upstairs was quite dark and old interior however staff were friendly. visited The Jekyll and Hyde on 19 May 2017

Me and my partner ate here to celebrate my birthday and this was our second time eating here, and it did not disappoint at all, the food was absolutely incredible and the service was even better. We love how this restaurant is so much different to any where else, you have an experience as the waiters are so knowledged on the history of gin (sorry didn't quite get your name but the guy with the beard was incredible) we absolutely loved all the facts he knew about every gin and could answer all our many questions. Excellent day and evening. Cocktail class was hilarious, food in the parlour was delicious, cocktails were great. Thanks to the staff for all their help, in particular the girl who mixed the cocktails for our class and the guy who hosted it. Would highly recommend. The only thing to mention is that I had some comments from guests about the customer service from a big girl with glasses and blue/green hair, such as 'bad attitude', 'unhelpful' and 'unapproachable'. I wouldn't usually say anything but I don't appreciate guests feeling like that when we were there to have a good time. Absolutely fabulous service from our waitress, who took the time to tell us brilliant stories about the different gins we ordered and made some great suggestions on drinks to try. The setting was unusual and we loved the quirky atmosphere and intimate style. The food was ok. One in our party had a great starter, but the other three who had the cheese and the chicken were unimpressed with the flavours. Steak mains were fantastic if a tad small. But Pork loin mains came with seriously underdone, starchy and hard potatoes dauphinoise. Waitress was very apologetic and rectified the situation and to be honest we had enjoyed so much gin, it wasn't a huge problem. Would go back for drinks and service, but wouldn't eat there again. shepademus visited The Jekyll and Hyde on 18 Feb 2017

Booked really early for Valentine's Day, even the member of staff said how early I had booked so asked for a good table and was assured of this. On the night I turned up on time only to be placed virtually in the corridor right on top of the entrance and a blaring radiator.....😳 Absolutely gutted, mrs totally upset and just had to leave, a waste of an evening as everywhere booked, wasted deposit paid and evening ruined. We loved it, all my friends loved it. WE came as a girlie group but now want to being partners along. Thanks James/Dean/Matt and all the team at Jekyll and Hyde. Gem of a place, quirky non-pretentious but fun. visited The Jekyll and Hyde on 28 Jan 2017

Fantastic afternoon at the cocktail masterclass. The guru Laura had a vast knowledge around the topic and was really confident with her delivery. The cocktails were fantastic and the atmosphere was great. I would definitely recommend to family and friends and I would love to go again. visited The Jekyll and Hyde on 14 Jan 2017

The gin and dinner experience was fantastic, the food was good and just the right portion size and the lady who looked after us had the most amazing knowledge of gin. (And tonic!). We will definitely be booking the gin class! Many thanks visited The Jekyll and Hyde on 06 Jan 2017

The food was great but I can't say we were made to feel welcome from the staff who we experienced apart from one young girl who was very pleasant. Our table for afternoon tea was booked for 12-2pm and I booked it for my friends 40th Birthday treat. We arrived at 11.50 am because we had never been before so had to find it hence were slightly early. On walking in one of the girls said we aren't open until 12 and I asked even if our table was booked for 12 and she said yes you can't come in until then so we went back outside and stood outside the front door for 10minutes. She then came and opened the door at 12 and said we could go in now but couldn't t come in before because they weren't insured for us to be there before 12. There was not a lot of empathy or pleasantness from her so I didn't really respond. I had tried to pre book and pay for a bottle of Prosecco to be waiting as a Birthday treat but it wasn't and the man who greeted us upstairs didn't have any idea ( the young girl who came on then sorted it and seemed to know what was going on). It is a quirky place which I loved but when I ordered a coffee it was brought over in a cup with no saucer and it was hot when I took it off the man. I did ask if it should have been on a saucer. The food was great and my friend was a vegetarian and this was catered for brilliantly. We had frozen glasses for the prosecco and blueberries which was a nice touch and then cocktails after but I was a little worried the fact that the man on the bar twisted the orange peel for decorations round his fingers then put them in the glass. I had heard lots of good things about this place which is why I booked it however I do think maybe a couple of lessons on how to make the customer feel welcome and comfortable wouldn't go a miss. The food was great and the young girl was very pleasant Im only sorry I didn't get her name. visited The Jekyll and Hyde on 17 Dec 2016

Unfortunately our evening didn't go well. The table wasn't set up for all of the group so we ended up squashed onto the existing table. The food was poor in many cases with about 5 people not wanting to eat theirs. No atmosphere and drinks slow to arrive. The staff tried to help and were very good at listening to our concerns but from pre booking experience to the end of the night it was a disappointment. visited The Jekyll and Hyde on 03 Dec 2016

Disappointed with the food fish was very salty, duck was very dry. The gingerbread cheesecake was disappointing. The highlights are the staff very friendly and the excellent gin cocktails especially chokka mango. visited The Jekyll and Hyde on 03 Dec 2016

Although the restaurant is not large the service was slow. Two of the meals were served on cold plates and the turkey was cold. The other meals were hot. Great customer service though when we complained and the drinks were great. visited The Jekyll and Hyde on 26 Nov 2016

I arrived at 9:15pm, originally my table was booked for 8:15 - 10:15 in the gin parlour via the online system, I then phoned to confirm we would be arriving at 9:00 to check that was ok. When we arrived I was told they were closing and only allowed one drink, I paid a £10 reservation to basically sit in a pub! The service was awful and we felt rushed by the girl who said when it's quiet they shut early however that wasn't told over the phone, she also said the only system is incorrect which is ridiculous because why allow people to book online when apparently it's not working! Overall experience there was awful and I would not go back! visited The Jekyll and Hyde on 24 Nov 2016

What a wonderful place! Matt and his team are awesome, really customer service on a whole new level. We enjoyed a cocktail making session and Matt's knowledge of Gin and cocktails was amazing. If you don't like Gin then don't worry - you will by the end! We had a party of 13 pubs managers so we had a basic understanding of Gin but no where near the in depth of knowledge that we was given. We then stayed for a 3 course meal - the food and inspiration that was created was amazing and really enjoyed. My only real area of improvement would be that when the food came out - there was 13 of us, we waited a while until everyone had the food presented. - maybe a few more staff to deliver it would of been good (I Know that your kitchen was on the level above us) Overall, fantastic environment, great service and great team! We will be back! visited The Jekyll and Hyde on 09 Nov 2016

Downstairs area: some bartenders nice, some moody and gave misleading information regarding happy hour drinks and did not accept responsibility when questioned about it. Ladies working in the gin parlour upstairs very welcoming and friendly. A lot of ingredients in the cocktails in gin parlour had ran out. Online poster said there is a halloween party with prize for fancy dress, did not seem like it at all on the night. Hardly anyone dressed up. Venue too small to dance also!! visited The Jekyll and Hyde on 29 Oct 2016

I book this for my friends birthday as we both love afternoon tea and gin. We were not disappointed by the venue - so quirky and the level of service was exceptional, I can recommend the gin cocktails, however I came away disappointed by the afternoon tea. It did not ruin the day though - the gin cocktails made up for that. libby32 visited The Jekyll and Hyde on 08 Oct 2016

I really expected to give an excellent review for this afternoon tea but was very disappointed. The venue is fabulous and very atmospheric the crockery vintage, friendly staff and lovely cocktails but that's where it ends. The tea was PG, the scones were tasty but small and very dry - certainly not 'baked fresh' as we were told, not enough sandwiches, the small slices of cake were exceptionally dry and the icing unrecognisable and inedible. Yum Yums and a mousse type thing - cheap and not very cheerful. The price was too expensive for what you get and the poor quality. I have been to many afternoon teas and this was probably one of the worst. We even ended up having a lunch an hour after we left. This could have been really good but I wouldn't waste my money and return. yvonne1 visited The Jekyll and Hyde on 01 Oct 2016

We visited on a Saturday night and was immediately impressed with the surrounding decor and music , the cocktails are brilliant ( I recommend the one that comes served in a miniature bath ! Although a very small food menu upstairs in the gin parlour the food was of a good standard . We went downstairs after our meal and what a cracking vibrant little bar it is 👏🏻 Thanks for a great night jay29 visited The Jekyll and Hyde on 23 Jul 2016

Nice quirky little bar, not for those on a budget though! I'd start off your night here as it can get quite cramped later on. Love the decor though and the beer garden is decorated with some trippy alice in wonderland paintings - what's not to love!

The secret gin parlour here is sooo cool and the garden is amazing. I think they could do more with the interior for sure but the drinks are SO good so I'll try not to complain :)
