XLR

Description

XLR is an independent nightclub and grassroots music venue. Based in the heart of South Manchester’s student and nightlife corridor, the 200‑capacity basement space has become a vital hub for emerging artists, promoters and alternative club culture.

Known for its forward‑thinking approach, XLR made national headlines in 2025 after becoming the UK’s first fully licensed BYOB nightclub, allowing ticket‑holders to bring their own alcohol into the venue. Entry is charged as a corkage‑style fee, while the venue also operates a bar on site, offering a flexible and accessible alternative to traditional club pricing.

The venue operates across an intimate basement dancefloor, fitted with a high‑powered sound system designed for club‑first energy and close audience‑artist interaction. XLR’s music policy centres on underground electronic sounds, including house, techno, garage, jungle, bass, breaks and experimental club genres, with different collectives and promoters taking control of each night.

Programming prioritises grassroots and community‑led events, providing a platform for rising local talent alongside touring UK and international DJs. Regular takeovers, student‑driven nights and cultural showcases sit alongside headline bookings, reinforcing the venue’s role as a testing ground for new ideas and scenes within Manchester nightlife.
