So you've got your NYE plans locked in—the outfit's sorted, the pre-drinks are planned, and you're ready to ring in 2027 in proper Manc style. But have you thought about how you're actually getting home? Because nothing kills the New Year buzz quite like being stranded in the city centre at 3am with a flat phone and a queue of 200 people waiting for the same taxi.
Don't panic. We've done the legwork so you don't have to. Here's everything you need to know about getting around Manchester on New Year's Eve 2026.
The Big Picture: What's Different On NYE?
New Year's Eve in Manchester is not a normal night. The city centre will be buzzing with people heading to bars, clubs, and the free public events at St Peter's Square and Albert Square.
Road closures will be in place across the city centre from the early evening, and tram services will be running to a modified pattern due to the fireworks event at St Peter's Square. Plan ahead, and you'll be absolutely fine. Wing it, and you might be walking home in heels.
Metrolink Trams On New Year: Your Best Friend (With A Catch)

Our yellow Bee Network trams will run on New Year's Eve.
Are trams running on NYE in Manchester?
Yes—and they're running more frequently than usual. On New Year's Eve, Metrolink trams will run every 12 minutes, and the last trams will depart Manchester city centre at roughly 1am. That's genuinely good news if you're heading home before things get too messy.
What's the catch with St Peter's Square?
Here's the big one: no trams will travel through St Peter's Square after 9pm on 31st December 2026. This is because the free fireworks and light spectacular event (TBC) runs from 10pm until 12.30am, and the tram stop sits right in the middle of it all. Services will be rerouted, so if St Peter's Square is your usual stop, you'll need to use an alternative.
Your best alternatives in the city centre are:
- Piccadilly Gardens — a major interchange and your go-to if you're heading east or south
- Deansgate-Castlefield — handy for lines heading towards Altrincham, Eccles, and MediaCityUK
- Victoria — great for lines heading north towards Bury, Rochdale, and Oldham
- Exchange Square — useful for the Second City Crossing routes
Check the TfGM journey planner before you head out so you know exactly which stop to aim for on your way home.
When does the St Peter's Square closure lift?
The fireworks event usually wraps up at 12.30am, so trams should resume through St Peter's Square after that — but expect it to be busy and allow extra time to get to your stop through the crowds.
How much does a tram cost?
Metrolink fares are frozen for 2026, so prices remain the same as they've been. A single journey within Zone 1 (the city centre) is £1, and fares to outer zones are capped. You can pay by contactless card or use the Bee Network app — no need to faff around with cash.
New Year's Eve Night Buses: Solid Options
Are buses running late on NYE?
Yes. Bee Network buses will run to a Saturday timetable on New Year's Eve, with most routes running until their normal finishing times and night buses running as normal.
Several late-night journeys will also run on routes across Greater Manchester. This is a significant improvement on previous years, when buses used to stop early on the 31st.
Which night buses run all night?
The Bee Network has been expanding its 24-hour services, and on NYE the following routes are your late-night lifelines:
- V1 (Leigh to Manchester) — runs 24/7
- 36 (Bolton to Manchester) — runs 24/7
- 43 (Manchester Airport to Piccadilly Gardens) — runs 24/7
- 135 (Piccadilly Gardens to Bury via Whitefield) — runs overnight on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights
- 17 (Manchester Shudehill to Rochdale via Middleton) — runs overnight on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights
Since New Year's Eve 2026 falls on a Thursday, the 135 and 17 should be running their overnight services. Always double-check on the Bee Network app or TfGM website before you head out, as NYE schedules can vary.
Where do night buses depart from?
Most night buses depart from Piccadilly Gardens or Shudehill Interchange in the city centre. Both are well-signposted and easy to find — just follow the yellow Bee Network signs.
How much is a bus?
The £2 single fare cap is in place for all of 2026, so a single journey anywhere on the Bee Network costs no more than £2. Tap in with your contactless card or bank card — no travel card needed, just tap and go.
NYE Trains: Check Before You Travel
Are trains running on NYE?
Trains will be running, but some services on certain routes will finish earlier than normal on New Year's Eve. Do not assume your usual last train is still running—check the National Rail journey planner or the Avanti/Northern/TransPennine app for your specific route before you go out.
Manchester's main stations—Piccadilly, Victoria, and Oxford Road—will all be operating, but services thin out as the night goes on. If you're travelling further afield (say, to Leeds, Liverpool, or Sheffield), check your last train time early in the evening and set a reminder on your phone.
What about engineering works?
Network Rail typically carries out engineering works over the festive period, which can affect routes into and out of Manchester. Check the National Rail website for any planned disruptions specific to 31st December 2026, although nothing is confirmed at the moment.
Taxis & Ride-Hailing: Expect Surge Pricing
Can I get an Uber or a taxi home?
You can, but be prepared. New Year's Eve is the busiest night of the year for taxis and ride-hailing apps, and surge pricing on Uber and Bolt will be significant around midnight. Waiting times can stretch to 30–45 minutes or longer in the city centre.
If you're planning to get a taxi home, your best options are:
- Pre-book a licensed taxi earlier in the evening through a local firm's app—Mantax (0161 230 3333) and Streetcars (0161 228 7878) are well-established Manchester operators
- Walk away from the city centre before requesting a ride—the further you get from the main event areas, the shorter your wait and the lower the surge, although stay alert if walking on your own at night
- Agree a meeting point with your group in advance, somewhere away from the main crowds
Bear in mind that road closures will affect where taxis can pick you up. Drivers won't be able to access the streets around St Peter's Square or Albert Square, so you may need to walk 10–15 minutes to a pickup point.
Top Tips For Getting Home In One Piece
Plan your route before you go out. Sounds obvious, but knowing which tram stop or bus stop you need to head to at midnight makes everything so much easier when you've had a few.
Download the Bee Network app. Live departure times, journey planning, and contactless payment all in one place. Do it now, before the night.
Charge your phone. A portable charger is your best NYE accessory. You'll need your phone for maps, apps, and calling your mates when you inevitably get separated.
Set a phone alarm for "last tram time." If you want to catch the last Metrolink out of the city centre, set an alarm for 12.30am to remind yourself to start heading to your stop.
Have a backup plan. Trams get busy, buses get full, and taxis get scarce. Know your Plan B before you need it—whether that's a pre-booked taxi, a friend with a sofa, or a hotel room nearby.
Meet at a landmark, not a street. If you're going out in a group, agree on a meeting point that's easy to find—the Arndale, Piccadilly Gardens, or the front of Victoria station are all good options.
Keep some cash on you. Most taxis accept cards, but it's always worth having a tenner in your pocket just in case.
