Mac & Wild Devonshire Square - London Restaurant Review

I visited the Highlands for the first time this January and it was everything I had hoped for; untamed, novel-inspiring beauty, local beers and enough whisky to fill Loch Ness. So why Andy Waugh and Calum Mackinnon would ever leave such a mythical...

Food was good and staff were accommodating to my gluten free, dairy free friend. The atmosphere is always very good as well. However when I first arrived, neither of the 2 staff on the front desk acknowledged me, and after about 5 minutes of me just standing there assuming they were very busy in the middle of something, one of them looked up from her screen and asked if I was OK. Well no obviously I'm waiting... It also took us quite a while for someone to come to take our order, we had to ask for someone's attention. visited Mac & Wild Devonshire Square on 12 Dec 2017

The food was very good quality but it wasn't warm enough and it spoiled the experience. The venison chateaubriand, haggis mac and cheese, and sticky toffee pudding in particular were verging on cold. The service was okay, but we had 3-4 waiters throughout the evening and it took a while for our food to be cleared and to get the bill. visited Mac & Wild Devonshire Square on 09 Dec 2017

Great time shooting, well set out and reasonable time for 12 people to 'have a go'. Food was good and whilst we appreciate this is more a 'meat' venue, perhaps review the non- meat options especially if customer preorders to give more time. Overall though, all my team enjoyed the experience. Thank you visited Mac & Wild Devonshire Square on 11 Dec 2017

We had a really nice time, we are only up the road, so your location is ideal. The gun room was really fun and the table service was a nice touch. Then the meal itself was really nice, it did take a bit longer than expected, but it was worth the wait. We hope to return shortly. The hunting lodges were the perfect venue for our team Christmas meal. They were private, cosy and we were able to play our own music through the speakers that they provided. The food was fantastic, in particular the venison chateaubriand! Although we were only supposed to have the lodge for 2 hours they allowed us to stay a lot longer, which was ideal. My one criticism would be that the drinks service was a little slow, but it was an extremely busy night. Natalie visited Mac & Wild Devonshire Square on 07 Dec 2017

Went for bottomless brunch. A bit disappointing - asked for more prosecco and was told to finish the small amount we had in the bottle first, slow service, had to go up to the bar to ask for more drinks twice. Defeated the purpose of "bottomless". Been before and loved it but will not be returning visited Mac & Wild Devonshire Square on 09 Dec 2017

Everyone enjoyed the food and the service was excellent (Tim!), minor hiccups were dealt with swiftly and professionally. Those who did the shooting thought it was really cool but we were hurried out a bit toward the end - though, with such a large group, that is understandable. On the whole - great! visited Mac & Wild Devonshire Square on 08 Dec 2017

A mixed review unfortunately. Food tasty and good although not hot enough, staff polite but drinks service slow. By the glass prosecco flat even second replaced glass. then charged on bill for full bottle in error which our lovely waiter took off straight away.and was very apologetic. Waited 15 mins for a forgotten g and t. But the most annoying thing was the on. a loop repetitive droning bass "music" played constantly . Some stuff seemed to be having a bit of a social amongst themselves whilst others very busy. Shame as heard Fitzrovia one brilliant. visited Mac & Wild Devonshire Square on 09 Dec 2017

Venue was beautiful, perfect for a team Christmas dinner (10 people). We had to pre order food and it all came out in a timely fashion. However the 3 course meal itself was ok - not anywhere near as good as a la carte. However for the purpose of our team work Christmas do it was good fun and value for money- would recommend visited Mac & Wild Devonshire Square on 07 Dec 2017

Really disappointed. Booked Gin and Whiskey tasting. First of all no one had any record of our booking, I was then told that I had only booked a whiskey tasting when on my booking it was clearly gin and whiskey. There was no one available to do the Gin tasting, eventually ended finding someone but it felt very rushed and a inconvenience. I appreciate it is christmas and very busy but then don't accept the booking and pay in advance for what wasnt a great service. We were also in the main restaurant so couldn't hear the experts. I will add the food and restaurant are great though, I would definitely come back was just disappointed with the tasting as it was for a work Christmas party. visited Mac & Wild Devonshire Square on 07 Dec 2017

Booked Mac & Wild for a team Christmas do plus colleague's birthday and I highly recommend it. The food was absolutely delicious!! It was a busy night and so service was not always the best. Mac & Wild is a must for anyone in the city looking for a touch of Scotland at its finest. The burgers are worthy of the praise and range of drinks should be lauded too. Particularly liked the smoky aroma which complements the lodge type décor. I've been 3 times now and would recommend to anyone. visited Mac & Wild Devonshire Square on 05 Dec 2017

Thoroughly enjoyed our visit although one of our party wanted their Venison rare rare rare (which to be fair is how venison should be done) but after much toing and froing and her accepting that they had no liability she did get her "blue" venison and loved it. Our experience was extremely disappointing. Below is my summary of our experience: Painful reservation process for a table of 8 for lunch on a Tuesday 5th Dec. Dirty cutlery on table. Seems all other tables got crackers except ours Staff left empty bottles of beer and glasses on the table Waiting staff were not given our (much insisted for) pre-orders Didn’t cater for wheat free at all despite charging a £5 supplement (for venison main and cheese platter) and having 5 days to arrange - and being situated next door to a Planet Organic Brought salmon starter with a huge knob of butter and nothing else Didn’t bring gravy with any of the mains until we requested it. Was told gravy was full of gluten Cheese platter very underwhelming for a £5 supplement Took ages to bring dessert and the bill even though there were empty tables around us Food was otherwise very tasty and staff tried to compensate where the events manager had clearly messed up Would not recommend or return visited Mac & Wild Devonshire Square on 05 Dec 2017

Booked the Gun Room for our office Xmas lunch. Absolutely brilliant. The staff were lovely and accommodating. The drinks were lethal and the food delicious. Its hard to please everyone on a night out, but i think on this occasion there were no complaints. Apparently we were one of the first to try the new shooting software which has a 2 player option. This meant that it became more competitive and more people could play in the time allocated. All good fun and an unusual night out. I would definitely book this again. visited Mac & Wild Devonshire Square on 04 Dec 2017

We had been looking forward to our annual Christmas dinner and chose Mac and Wild as we had heard some good thing's but sadly it was spoiled due to a very rude and sarcastic waiter. He seemed to have no time to answer any of the questions on the food and wine and when we were ordering he was literally asking us to hurry up as he had a home to go to. Other than this very rude bearded waiter the food was faultless as was the rest of the staff who dealt with us at the Devonshire square restaurant, it's just such a shame that every time that waiter came over there was a terrible atmosphere especially considering the 8 of us were spending a substantial amount of money. visited Mac & Wild Devonshire Square on 02 Dec 2017

I came away really wanting to believe in the restaurant as the idea/energy and enthusiasm was infectious and deserves to succeed. The food tasted wonderful. Unfortunately a mix up with the order meant the main course was sporadic to arrive to my guests and the evening fell out of sync waiting for coffee etc... Perhaps they need another waiter on when busy? Definitely worth a visit and you should make your own mind up...the food itself wont disappoint! visited Mac & Wild Devonshire Square on 29 Nov 2017

I come here during the week and cannot fault the service or the food. However the service was slow. It took us 20mins to get tap water and coffee. The bottomless brunch was only good as our friends got up and asked for top ups orgot the bottles themselves from the bar. Our glasses would have been constantly empty otherwise. The eggs came out cold, the steak was over cooked and bland the Mac and cheese was boring and tasteless and once more the service was slow and amateur. Really unfortunate as this was a birthday meal out for two of us, being treated by our other halfs. The welcome wasn't great, the young girl wasn't friendly or smiley just looked uninterested and bored. Shown to our table and then just left for over half hour without the offer of a drink..we had to wave someone down who actually said 'you've been put in the corner your being forgotten about' and laughed it off..when we said we'd actually been waiting a while she just seemed quite put out and wanted to take our order quickly. Ordered wine took 20 mins for us to be told they didn't have that wine in, so we ordered a bottle of presecco instead, about 15 mins later someone else came over with one single glass of prosecco...we then waited another 15 mins for the bottle to arrive when we ordered a second bottle a little later a different bottle was brought over without explanation. When the food came again served by another waiter, they seemed confused as to if it was for us. I had steak which was good but I had a butter knife to cut it with, when I asked for a steak knife I received the same one but slightly sharper I was advised it might not look like it but it was a steak knife, it definitely wasn't. After our mains we waited for around 25 mins without anyone asking if we wanted to look at the deserts so we then flagged someone down for our bill, 15 mins and still nothing came so we had to ask again, we checked our bill and were charged for the bottle of wine they didn't even have in and service charge...we asked for the wine to be taken off and the service charge, the waiter walked off and again just laughed this off. When we got the final bill brought over by another different waitress this time she had taken 20% off the bill..it's such a shame but that didn't make up for the evening, it's in a great location and the food was good but the service let's it down the moment you walk in. I don't usually take the time to complain but this wasn't just one thing it was a whole evening of terrible service and mistake after mistake, sadly our whole evening was ruined, one which we had been looking forward to. We won't be returning. visited Mac & Wild Devonshire Square on 11 Nov 2017

When we got there, our table was not ready. We were told to wait in the foyer and that we couldn’t go to the bar. We felt a little bit miffed about this and then decided to go to the bar. We were then told our table was still not ready and we would have to wait. This is because the previous party were sitting at the table waiting to pay. I think that a member of staff could have sped up the situation by taking payment. Then we mentioned we had a Timeout voucher and needed to know what we could order, we were told that our waitress would explain. When our waitress came over she asked if we were ready to order, we said no as we didn’t know what we could order. Meal was ok. Nothing amazing really. They forgot to bring out beans with the meal. Then when the bill came, the Timeout vouchers were on the bill but had not been deducted. Bit of a disappointment really as just so many things went wrong but no one said, oh we’ll give you free drinks for your inconvenience etc. Jennifer visited Mac & Wild Devonshire Square on 11 Nov 2017

NIce food but very poor service. We waited over 30 minutes for our starters and when we inquired as to when they would be coming our waiter said (in a very matter of fact manner) that it was busy service and everyone ordered / 'came in' at the same time. That may be the case but I imagine most of your business will be coming from working lunches where customers require and expect a quick bite and therefore prompt service. Notwithstanding the above we were not offered a complimentary drink by way of an apology. However, good burger. Mac and cheese was lovely. If i was to be picky the fries could have been left in the fryer for longer as they were not crispy. Honeycomb ice-cream was AMAZING, best I've ever had. I had really high hopes for M&W but came away extremely disappointed. The starters were good and nice environment, but the mains were poor and service equally so. Meat was over cooked and sides were cold, staff were also clearly aware there was an issue and didn’t come and ask how the food was whilst we ate. Signed up for the free gin masterclass, when we arrived, double checked this would still be going ahead and were told yes so we proceeded to buy brunch (as per the terms of the free masterclass) and the food was fine etc. An hour and a bit later we ask for the bill in preparation for the masterclass time slot and that's when the manager appears at our table to tell us that the gin masterclass isn't happening - considering they could have told us at any point during the meal and subsequent time we spent hanging around purchasing more drinks to pass the time it felt as if we had been conned into paying for a brunch we wouldn't have come to if we had known the masterclass wasn't happening. All the manager could say was 'well we can give you a drink on the house but you know the masterclass was free so you haven't really missed out on anything....' - true except we wouldn't have spent £50 on brunch for 2 if we'd have known and would have gone somewhere with better customer service and probably spent less money. This is the second time we have been disappointed by this restaurant, definitely should have learnt from the first time. visited Mac & Wild Devonshire Square on 21 Oct 2017

I booked a table for 18 in my group to celebrate a special birthday and I collated a pre-order for Mac and Wild as advised and although I was reassureed that my day will run smoothly and special attention will be made when I called on my way to Liverpool street , I found out that the manager Cloe did not have my pre-order so I panicked and had to find the email I originally sent! Although the staff were friendly and nice, the food came out cold, service wasn’t good as we had to keep asking to be topped up (some of us took advantage of the bottomless drinks on offer) and for assistance . I put a lot of work in gathering the pre-order for Mac and Wild so the whole point was that we would have a smooth 2 hours lunch sitting but instead I spent more time worrying and making sure everyone was being looked after. I think it would have been better to order on the day from the menu on offer. Just wanted to feedback to those booking with large groups as they struggled to cater for us even though the restaurant was queit being a Saturday!! If I was to go again i would go with a small goup of no more than 7 or 8! benson40 visited Mac & Wild Devonshire Square on 04 Nov 2017

Loved the decor in the place, it complimented the relaxed comfortable atmosphere. The staff were super friendly and very knowledgeable about the menu. I tried two different beers, neither were amazing so i'll keep working through the menu. The food lived up to my expectations, meaning I'll definitely be a repeat customer, i'm looking forward to trying the bone marrow starter next time. Tried to get a walk in table at 7pm on Wednesday night but we were told by the lady at front of house that there was nothing until 9pm!! Had a drink outside in the square and the guy at the bar said there should be tables... had to go online on my phone and was able to book at table at 7.30pm. It would be nice to know why we were not offered a table by the lady at Front of House? Could have been brilliant - let down by staff who don't care and stone cold food! We had booked on the recommendation of a friend, so were hoping for good things, but it was a bit of a let down. After 45 minutes I gave up and went to find a waiter to take our order. That was our experience with the wait staff the whole night, we were constantly having to get up and find waiters to order even drinks. The food would have been really nice, but all of it was cold, like it had been sitting around on hot plates for ages, and we left a lot of it because it was just cold and soggy and gross. One of our party mentioned it to a waiter & he didn't care at all. The waiters had no idea who had ordered what, and some of it came later than the rest, and we had to ask for steak knives for the steak (it's a steak & burger restaurant). All in all it wasn't a great night, and it was such a shame, because the starters we got were actually hot and those were delicious! I thought maybe we just got a bad night, so when I was asked to leave a review I emailed the restaurant to let them know about our experience before I posted - thought they might have an explanation like not enough staff on that night or something. But they never responded. Sent them a follow up and still no response, so the review is going up! There are loads of lovely restaurants in london where the staff give enough of a sh#t to bring you a drink, get your food to you when is still warm & write you back if you have the courtesy to let them know you had a bad experience- do yourself a favour and go to one of those. Give this one a miss! visited Mac & Wild Devonshire Square on 07 Oct 2017

The food was superb and the service very good and rather professional. But the overall organisation was one heck of a mess. First they told me over the phone that both restaurants were fully booked for the night. We still showed up and more than half of the tables were totally empty for the entire 2.5hrs we were there. But the main issue was the manager's approach which we found highly unprofessional, borderline rude! The young waitress decided to offer us a more expensive wine for the price of a cheaper bottle "sold out"; the good old trick! Which is the thing to do in such a case and she really di a great job. But the manager did not seem overly happy with the whole situation, and frankly, this is something he should have dealt with in private! Not in front of customers. So, in a nutshell, nothing very bad as the food was fantastic, but they need to sort out their mess if they want to compete (and succeed) against the likes of (highly professional) Hawksmore. What can I say? I'd never been before and booked it as a birthday meal for my brother. It was fantastic. The food was fabulous, all the flavours well thought out and presented beautifully. Their Scottish takes on classic cocktails are well balanced and dangerously drinkable! And the staff are friendly, attentive (but don't fall into the trap of being too attentive) and really helpful with tricky dishes like the roasted bone marrow! I can't speak for busy nights, but it was the perfect Monday night distraction. Thank you! visited Mac & Wild Devonshire Square on 16 Oct 2017

The food was truly excellent, but the service was very slow. We were one of the first tables to arrive and I believe they didn't assign any single waiter/waitress to our table, this meant every time we had to try to catch someone for attention, and our drink orders then took forever to arrive. Whenever someone did appear at our table they were great, they just needed to have someone assigned like all the other tables had. visited Mac & Wild Devonshire Square on 14 Oct 2017

Mac and Wild is a lovely spot. The food is interesting and pretty good value however the service really lets it down. It’s generally pretty friendly but just slow, and lackadaisical. I don’t like being bothered by waiters every five minutes asking if everything is ok but a little bit of attention would be nice. We were in a group and the waitress got one of our mains wrong and insisted it was our fault. To be fair they did take that order off the bill. The place wasn’t full on a Friday lunchtime and given the quality of the food and the location it should be packed. Please sort it out. visited Mac & Wild Devonshire Square on 29 Sep 2017

This was my first visit and it was a mixed bag but generally good and i'd go back. The burger was amazing, and the wildnerness chips were INCREDIBLE! Really lovely, meaty rich gravy. The starters we had were more mediocre - the haggis pops were really tasty but just could have been hot, they were only warm. nad the bone marrow i didn't enjoy as a bit gloopy but that could just be my tastes. drinks were delicious but the only annoying thing was that the staff didn't do check backs at either course. I have managed a restaurant and notice even more the importance of check backs to ask how everything is - especially as we did actually need something. No one took our initial drinks order fro so long i had to get up and ask at the till for a bottle of wine. Note to staff just to try and make eye contact a bit more as it was REALLY hard trying to get anyone's attention. All of the staff were delightful and super friendly and nice when they served us though. x visited Mac & Wild Devonshire Square on 27 Sep 2017
