Mac & Wild Devonshire Square - London Restaurant Review

I visited the Highlands for the first time this January and it was everything I had hoped for; untamed, novel-inspiring beauty, local beers and enough whisky to fill Loch Ness. So why Andy Waugh and Calum Mackinnon would ever leave such a mythical...

We ate in the restaurant, and then took part in the Butchery Taster course afterwards. I can't recommend this experience enough! Andy was absolutely fantastic and we learnt a lot about where the meat from Mac and Wild comes from. The Venimoo burger was absolutely delicious - and a special mention for the Haggis Mac n Cheese too! Visited Mac & Wild Devonshire Square on 2018-02-14

I booked a table last minute and swapped red roses for Highland Red deer. The food is fabulous, particularly the venison which was so tender you could cut it with a butter knife. And the menu gave details of it hunter and butcher. How's that for 'knowing where your food is from'? And then Andy demonstrated how to butcher a whole saddle of venison. And we were allowed to have a go. Interesting and fun and then a bottle of whisky appeared... These are only being repeated a few more times, so get yourself down there for a real treat. Thanks Andy. 😎 Visited Mac & Wild Devonshire Square on 2018-02-14

Good location and nice interior. Haggis pops were a great starter. However things went downhill from there. Burgers took 40 minutes to arrive; we were disappointed wth what is supposedly ‘the best burger in town’, particularly given that with chips it comes in at £14. Had far better from Byron for near on half the price. Then another 30 minute wait for dessert, even though the restaurant was only half full. This was provided free of charge as a result, but not a great experience and I won’t be hearing back. Visited Mac & Wild Devonshire Square on 2018-02-13

There are various reasons as to why I have rated this as such. The first issue I had was when trying to book the venue. This turned out to be quite a complicated process which involved me visiting the venue and contacting banks just so we could put down a holding deposit. Secondly, the main attraction to booking this as our Xmas party venue was down to the virtual shooting experience. Without it we would have booked a large table in the main restaurant or looked elsewhere. I was informed roughly a week prior to our event that the virtual shooting experience was not working properly. I understand that this is not necessarily the fault of the venue, however, it did mean that the focal point of the evening was not there. Because of the time of year there would be no way of me sourcing another venue for our party, plus the deposit had already been paid. Thirdly, once we had arrived at the venue I felt that some of the staff weren't on the ball. We were offered a whisky tasting experience as soon as we arrived which was illogical given we hadn't yet eaten. I was told prior to the evening that we would have drinks ready upon arrival - this was not the case. There were two or three occasions where I had to go upstairs to find a member of staff as it felt as if we had just been left to our own devices. The food was fairly good quality and we ended up having the whisky tasting at the end which is where the member of staff running the session came into his own. We were meant to have a minimum spend of £1,000 for the private room, though (I'm guessing!) because of the issues with the virtual shooting range we were not billed for this minimum spend - thank you for this. All in all it is a nice venue, though I don't think I will look to use the private room again because at times it felt like we were forgotten about which is a shame given that we had already encountered problems with the booking. We were pretty underwhelmed with our visit. We arrived on time for our reservation, to then be told that the kitchen was about to close so could we order as soon as possible. I was surprised because I made the reservation weeks earlier and nothing about the kitchen closing was communicated to me. Another member of staff approached the table to again tell us the kitchen was about to close so could we hurry?! We rushed to order, to then be told there was no rib-eye so panicked and order the venison and one of the burgers. Our starters arrived but we weren’t even given any plates to eat them from and we had to ask. The food arrived and admittedly the venison was delicious but my burger tasted just like a Big Mac. I do like Big Macs but they cost considerably less than what this burger did. We were there for the bottomless brunch and had to keep getting the attention of the staff even when we were the last customers in the restaurant. Disappointed in our visit as we had such high hopes. I doubt I will return or recommend. Visited Mac & Wild Devonshire Square on 2018-02-10

We'll definitely be returning to Mac & Wild. Five of us attended for a family meal and everyone of us enjoyed the meals we chose, the venison was particularly nice. The staff were friendly and efficient, there was a slight delay in getting our desserts and because of that they were given to us on the house, along with coffee something we didn't ask for nor expect. everyone enjoyed the shooting. This was well organised by M&W and the group was very well looked after, throughout the evening. Food was nice (we came for the award winning burger and we weren’t disappointed) but overpriced for what is was. The restaurant was very noisy, we strained to hear each other speak. We were given a table right by the open door with an awful draft, even though our party arrived before 6 when the restaurant was pretty much empty. Service was fine but a bit confused, different waiting staff asked us the same questions several times. Food was the highlight but we wouldn’t return. Food was excellent and the staff were friendly. My only piece of advice would be for the staff to be aware of each other’s movements around the restaurant - we were approached by several waiters within the first 2 minutes of us taking our seats. Easily rectified by having each waiter look after their own section, however no fault can be given to their attitudes and demeanour. Visited Mac & Wild Devonshire Square on 2018-02-03

Overall a nice experience. Food is of a good standard. Apple pie was really nice.. Staff were friendly also. Only criticism the cocktails - tiny! I really can't recommend Mac & Wild highly enough. I booked the Gun Room, (free) haggis-making masterclass, and dinner for my partner's birthday, and absolutely everything about it was perfect. I hadn't been sure what to expect from the Gun Room, but it was a lot of fun, and I'd definitely do it again with a group of friends. The haggis-making masterclass was probably the highlight - Andy is so passionate about what he does, and it was a real pleasure to chat with him, and hear the story of the restaurant. Making haggis from scratch was brilliant, and Andy even took the finished product off to be cooked, so we could sample it later on; it was absolutely delicious, and he sent us home with a massive portion. The meal itself was superb - everything on the menu was clearly very carefully thought-through and so well-executed, and the quality of the meat really made the difference. We had the scotch egg, cullen skink (one of the best things I've ever tasted), Venimoo burgers (which lived up to the hype), and whisky sticky toffee pudding (as good as it sounds), along with a lot of whisky, cocktails, beer, wine, and even Buckfast... The service was absolutely impeccable. Every single member of staff remembered it was my partner's birthday, and took the time to wish him a happy birthday. It was clear that they were all very knowledgeable about both the food and drink on offer, and were very happy to take the time to chat about them with us. We are already planning our next visit (for brunch), and are busy recommending it to everyone we know - we've definitely found our new favourite place. Thank you so much for such a wonderful, memorable birthday celebration, and we will look forward to coming back as soon as we can! Visited Mac & Wild Devonshire Square on 2018-01-30

I sincerely hope I am not wasting my time writing this review? Your restaurant was recommended to me by a colleague in my office in Aldgate and, I have to say I was disappointed with the whole experience. Please note below: 1. Your reception was not aware we were coming which was embarrassing considering I had a client with us and you had sent me a confirmation email following my online booking! 2. Once in the restaurant the service was I felt slow 3. I did not think the food was value for money, the portion size was ridiculous nowhere near big enough for what we paid. The Burns night event was great fun. Loved the outside girl pipers and cocktail. Great atmosphere and delicious food. The toast to the haggis was done very well. We brought friend and had great fun. BUT You obviously suffered from being pushed for time. We were brought wrong orders for every course and waited an hour between starter and main -- we asked 3 times and then we were brought 1 pudding to share --- I think our order had not been submitted as others were served before us having arrived after. We were sorry there was no toast to the lads and lassies nor singing of Auld lang syne as indicated in the pack. we would appreciate your comments However it was a great atmosphere and staff were friendly and we hope you will repeat it next year. A bit disappointed with the Burns Night at Devonshire Square - 25 January 2018. Arrived at about 1945 for 8pm and I know that we weren't to be seated until later, but we were out in the cold and not seated until 2115. I ordered haggis for starter, got the veggie version. When I pointed this out, I was recently given a small bowl of the real thing... Eventually.. I ordered the venison for main course and it arrived a bit on the cool side, which is always sub optimal for a rare steak, as the centre is cool already. The dish was also missing the advertised bacon lardons and the spinach. Wine was good, serving staff were friendly but totally overworked and the Piper and entertainment were excellent. I can't fault the taste and quality of the ingredients at all, but the shortcomings in preparation due to the pressure on the kitchen were evident. To be honest, at £50 per head, I felt let down to get service as chaotic as it was -it felt like you had overbooked and the kitchen had had a meltdown. We felt more fortunate than the table next door, which arrived before us, but were still waiting for their main when we left at 1120.... Could do better. The atmosphere and table service was amazing, really made the evening. The food was also lovely - the steak was to die for, the only negative comment i'd make would be with regards to the sticky toffee pudding. I asked the waiter before ordering it, how big it was and ordered it accordingly but i found it to be a bit of a disappointment. It was hard on top, dry in the middle and too large a portion in my opinion. For £7.00 I was expecting something a little better (whiskey caramel was delicious though). A great getaway from the busy scene of the center of the city. Great food, very expansive list of scotch whiskeys (try the Ginger Laddie). The menu offers a lot of variety within its short list. Pretty disappointing - booked to use the gun room as a surprise birthday treat for a friend, then the day before was called to change the time of the booking. Changed the time of the booking to suit the venue, turned up at the venue to be told that the gun room wasn't working! I wish we'd had prior notification - even half an hour before the event would have been ok to find something else to do! Waitress was pretty rude and dismissive, shrugging her shoulders. Two stars given for the venison and steaks which were delicious, though a little on the small side. Kale tasted of pure salt and despite us mentioning that it was inedible (and the waiter agreeing), it remained on our bill. With only two tables in the restaurant, we were kicked out at 9.45pm. Was disappointed to be unable to order from the christmas set menu. Waiter was very polite in explaining that we needed to have prebooked this menu (and did check with the chef), but this was not clear when I booked the table online. We had planned a christmas meal and my partner was disappointed not to get turkey. While I ended up having the same meal as I would have ordered from the set menu (salmon etc.), this would have been £5 more expensive on the set menu - not very reassuring... The food itself was very mediocre (unpleasant in places) and certainly over-priced (on either menu). Don't mind paying for quality but this was not the case here. The place was very noisy - understandable on the Friday before christmas - but there was no need for the loud music that made it impossible to talk without shouting. Was also disappointed that there was no rosé wine available, and the wine that was available was also over-priced. Had been really looking forward to the meal (as our first Christmas in London after moving from Glasgow!) so was very disappointed. Staff were very nice and though service was very slow this was only due to being understaffed, not lack of effort! Visited Mac & Wild Devonshire Square on 2017-12-22

Food was good and venue is nice but there was A MOUSE running around in the restaurant. Service was also quite slow and I would have thought they should have compensated us or at least not added on full service charge after having the mouse disturbing the dinner... The food was of a very high standard as were the cocktails. Unfortunately a number of items were not available on the night as the restaurant had run out of several ingredients. We also had just the one person serve a table of 13 which was a stretch. Our server was extremely helpful and was working very hard but it felt like the restaurant was understaffed. We had an enjoyable night but it wasn’t Mac & Wild’s best showing. Visited Mac & Wild Devonshire Square on 2017-12-30

The food was amazing and couldn't be faulted, the service was great when we arrived, but then it quickly turned into a very long waiting game; "how long are we going to wait before someone checks our table to see how everything is? How long until we get offered the deserts menu? How long until we can pay the bill?" After our main we waited for nearly 40 minutes before someone walked past so we could ask for the bill (didn't even get offered the deserts menu in the end), then we waited another 15 minutes before we could actually pay! We were very close to just not paying and walking out, but finally someone came over when they noticed we had put our coats on. It wasn't an incredibly busy night either, so we left feeling really disappointed as the service was incredibly poor compared to the last time we visited. Yesterday was the second time I've been to M&W and was in response to the amazing experience I had the first time I went. My first trip was back in December 2016 for a staff Christmas party. The food was faultless and truly some of the best I've ever eaten, hence the second trip! The thing that stood out this time was the noticeable time between request and action. We asked for drinks and these took 15-mins to arrive, and had to be chased for. We then had another 20-min wait before flagging down our waitress to order food, who seemed surprised we had stopped her. Yes, it was busy, but I've seen busier places take food orders within half an hour of being seated. Now, when the food arrived, it was spectacular! Best burger I've ever had. And same goes for the sticky toffee pud – bloody marvellous! And despite being slow, when the waitress did stop at our table, she couldn't have been more helpful about answering our questions. Sadly, I had to leave in a bit of a rush to catch a train and upon trying to get my coat back from the cloakroom, it seemed like the receptionist had five different roles, as she scurried past me with a tray of drinks. In the end I had to flag down another member of staff. Now, I'm not one to hold a grudge, and I bloody love the food here so will definitely be back, but having read through others comments, I feel something needs to be said about the service. It would be such a shame for this place to get a bad name as the food is truly incredible. Fingers crossed it improves for future visits! Visited Mac & Wild Devonshire Square on 2017-12-20

The food was very good but I am afraid the service was well below standards. I understand that it was a Xmas night but we ordered a bottle of champagne and had to chase for it to be delivered twice and waiting 20 mins for it to come. We then had to ask several times to order our food. Our steaks came with no cutlery on the table and had to wait for 5 mins for the cutlery to arrive after chasing it up. Then had to ask twice for the bill. Visited Mac & Wild Devonshire Square on 2017-12-20

Food was great, service was great. Pace was a bit slow, however. Lunch ended up taking two hours, which for three people felt long. Gap between drinks > starter > main servings was noticeable. It is such a shame to leave a bad review as your staff were lovely and we all agreed the venue was perfect and had a fantastic 'Christmassy' feel, however, the food was beyond poor. The majority of us had the Turkey for our main, which was bland and non descript. I understand that you had to bulk prepare your food to accommodate the amount of customers you had over the that day, but it was so disappointing. Next we ordered the sticky toffee pudding which none of us ate. Once you managed to get the spoon through the tough burn exterior the inside was tasted as expected.. burnt and inedible. I chose this venue for our Christmas lunch as you had been placed as one of the top 10 Christmas venues for 2016 in our local area. Not sure what happened this year. Or maybe we just attended on a 'bad day'. Visited Mac & Wild Devonshire Square on 2017-12-15

I've been to the Fitzrovia restaurant a number of times and had a really great time so was looking forward to trying out Devonshire Square. Unfortunately pretty much everything went wrong... - we were running 10 mins late so tried to call 3 times to let the restaurant know, no one picked up and the mailbox was full - when we arrived our table wasn't ready so we were told to sit at the bar. It became clear that we had been forgotten about when there were a few empty tables but we hadn't been seated. I asked a member of staff and he said he didn't know we were waiting but he'd find out. He didn't. It wasn't until the receptionist came back down that they eventually gave us a table 40 mins after our original booking time. - We were seated but didn't get menus, eventually had to ask for them - Starters arrived and were great! The food overall was very good. - Mains didn't arrive for quite a while, again we asked a member of staff where they were and he said he'd check, he didn't. Our original waiter came out and apologised and we got our mains, which again were really delicious but very late. - One of the bartenders came round to tell us they were doing last orders, we made a joke about how we'd only just got our food and he was pretty rude to us - A waitress then apologised on his behalf as he is "sensitive" and offered us free desserts to compensate for all our delays. - We ordered dessert and whisky, 2 desserts arrived and then another 2, 10 mins later with the last coming out 5 mins after that. - We got the bill and the desserts where still on the bill and we had to ask for them to be taken off The whole evening was so chaotic it became a bit comical, like faulty towers. I totally understand how busy things are over Christmas but so much went wrong and it felt like no one was in charge. I really like Mac & Wild so hoping it was an of night. I also have to say our specific waiter was really friendly and kept his composure the whole evening but we were left with the overall feeling of disappointment. The food at Mac &Wild is superb. I had the venison which was some of the best I've tasted in London. The Scotch eggs, too, are fantastic. The whisky flights are also a great idea. However the evening was let down by poor service. Not enough staff to work both the cloakroom and reception and tables. Also, seeing it's a restaurant built on provenance the staff weren't knowledgable about the food or whisky served in the restaurant. Visited Mac & Wild Devonshire Square on 2017-12-16

Mac&Wild ist great, Devonshire square being different to Fitzrovia, We found the music too loud, which is happening at lots of different places all over town. Unsatisfied. This was my 3rd Visit in 6 months. 7th Visit in 12 months 1/ It took 15 minutes for our coats to be taken and for us to be seated 2/ The table was then requested 15 minutes earlier than the time we were informed we had the table until. Therefore 30 minutes was lost of the 2.5hr slot we were given. 3/ Repeated requests to waiting staff asking for drinks and where are they (note our waiter/waitress changed 4 times during our meal period). A guest joined us 30 minutes after our first order of drinks, he got his straight away and we had to ask again! The whole trying to get drinks became humorous. 4/ All Christmas burgers and Mac and Chesses were served just warm and were cold within minutes. 5/ Gave up waiting for our coats in a crammed foyer, as it would seam 1 person is responsible for booking people in, taking their coats and seats them, then dealing with the guests which are leaving. Note point 1. Therefore we took our own coats from the coat area. Overall disappointing and most of the guests had been before. At the present time we would not consider the MAC and Wild again as we have noticed over the last two visits the service/quality has dropped below standard. Food was good and staff were accommodating to my gluten free, dairy free friend. The atmosphere is always very good as well. However when I first arrived, neither of the 2 staff on the front desk acknowledged me, and after about 5 minutes of me just standing there assuming they were very busy in the middle of something, one of them looked up from her screen and asked if I was OK. Well no obviously I'm waiting... It also took us quite a while for someone to come to take our order, we had to ask for someone's attention. Visited Mac & Wild Devonshire Square on 2017-12-12

Great time shooting, well set out and reasonable time for 12 people to 'have a go'. The hunting lodges were the perfect venue for our team Christmas meal. They were private, cosy and we were able to play our own music through the speakers that they provided. The food was fantastic, in particular the venison chateaubriand! Although we were only supposed to have the lodge for 2 hours they allowed us to stay a lot longer, which was ideal. First of all no one had any record of our booking, I was then told that I had only booked a whiskey tasting when on my booking it was clearly gin and whiskey. There was no one available to do the Gin tasting, eventually ended finding someone but it felt very rushed and a inconvenience. I appreciate it is christmas and very busy but then don't accept the booking and pay in advance for what wasnt a great service. We were also in the main restaurant so couldn't hear the experts. Our experience was extremely disappointing. Below is my summary of our experience: Painful reservation process for a table of 8 for lunch on a Tuesday 5th Dec. Dirty cutlery on table. Seems all other tables got crackers except ours Staff left empty bottles of beer and glasses on the table Waiting staff were not given our (much insisted for) pre-orders Didn’t cater for wheat free at all despite charging a £5 supplement (for venison main and cheese platter) and having 5 days to arrange - and being situated next door to a Planet Organic Brought salmon starter with a huge knob of butter and nothing else Didn’t bring gravy with any of the mains until we requested it. Was told gravy was full of gluten Cheese platter very underwhelming for a £5 supplement Took ages to bring dessert and the bill even though there were empty tables around us Food was otherwise very tasty and staff tried to compensate where the events manager had clearly messed up Would not recommend or return Visited Mac & Wild Devonshire Square on 2017-12-05

Its hard to please everyone on a night out, but i think on this occasion there were no complaints. Apparently we were one of the first to try the new shooting software which has a 2 player option. We had been looking forward to our annual Christmas dinner and chose Mac and Wild as we had heard some good thing's but sadly it was spoiled due to a very rude and sarcastic waiter. He seemed to have no time to answer any of the questions on the food and wine and when we were ordering he was literally asking us to hurry up as he had a home to go to. Other than this very rude bearded waiter the food was faultless as was the rest of the staff who dealt with us at the Devonshire square restaurant, it's just such a shame that every time that waiter came over there was a terrible atmosphere especially considering the 8 of us were spending a substantial amount of money. Non-attentive service let down the experience. Also, please serve food on plates, not silly skillets. Visited Mac & Wild Devonshire Square on 2017-11-25

The food is excellent- we loved the twists on traditional Scottish dishes. The bottomless brunch menu is generous and offers great value for money. Visited Mac & Wild Devonshire Square on 2017-11-25

Disappointing- we went for an evening meal . Heard that the hamburgers were amazing. They weren’t. (Veni Moo burgers) Terrible chips as well. And totally overpriced. The salmon was ok though. Won’t be going back. I thought Bryon was bad - these burgers were worse. Visited Mac & Wild Devonshire Square on 2017-11-24
