Description

Launching this August, Canova Hall will breathe new air into one of Brixton’s most commemorated buildings on 250 Ferndale Road, SW9 8BQ. Celebrating one of London’s most exciting areas this opening will be honouring the provenance of what used to be the beloved worker’s hall of Britain’s first department store Le Bon Marché across the road. Canova Hall and its eclectic all-day and late-night offering welcomes in locals and all those visiting the neighbourhood to enjoy, relax and indulge as the buzz, utility and grandeur of a timeless old market canteen sets the tone.

All day and night the food is centred on natural fuel with an authentic wood oven imported from Modena, Italy, delivering quality, simple food. Everything on the menu is fresh, from their 48 hour fermented pizza dough to their homemade pastas, both made every day in the restaurant. They use the best ingredients they can, cooking from scratch and focusing on each dish delivering 12/10 flavour.  From their House Tagliatelle, with stracciatella, pink peppercorns and gremolata to Smokey Rigatoni with smoked acrmoza, pistachio pesto and rosemary.  They are bringing the an array of pizzas from their sister bar Martello Hall in Hackney, including their best sellers Rock Star Margherita and Smokey Bandit alongside some new pizzas like The Hot Don with ‘nduja, finocchiona, pickled chillies, hot red pesto and oregano. Evenings at Canova Hall mirror Brixton’s life and soul as cocktail trolleys offer gin and all the accompaniments for making your own drinks. If you'd prefer to be waited on you can ‘Book a Bartender’ and they will conjure up a mix of creative cocktails for you at your table as young London DJ’s and live bands play music into the early hours. Designed by Red Deer with a strong influence on the building’s history, utilitarian Edwardian detailing and indications of faded Art Deco frame a blue collar bustle met with inspirations of the world’s most authentic food halls and markets; San Telmo in Buenos Aires, Mercado San Miguel in Madrid and the Boqueria of Barcelona. The venue’s narrative compliments the day-time, relaxed workspace environment offering hot-desking, fast Wi-Fi and great coffee.

The team’s love of gin has by no means been diminished - having perfected their distilling skills with their on-site gin distillery ‘Nicola’ at Martello Hall, they are going bigger and better at Brixton with a new bespoke American still called ‘Grace’. Those looking to take Canova Hall’s distinctive gin flavours home will be able to do so with small batches of both the Canova Gin and Martello Gin being sold at both sites.

Open 7 days a week from early morning to 1am (Friday and Saturday), Canova Hall will cater to your whole day. Be it the wage earners hot-desking with the bottomless coffee flowing or the late night revelers sipping on cocktails whilst dancing to deep dug vinyl gems, Canova Hall is always there for you.

Brixton is seemingly the latest stop for London's trend train, and while local aggravation over venue closures are just and fair, that hasn't stopped its property being snapped up by those looking to capitalise on this new millennial territory. And...

Worst experience, avoid at all costs. There are hundreds of great places to eat in Brixton, don't waste your money here. visited Canova Hall on 11 Oct 2017

Okay it looks great but having booked brunch for 12noon and not receiving any of the food order until 12.50 is not great. Some staff - not all I may add - need some serious training, they had no idea what was going on and it wasn't as if the place was full, half full at best. Being a Brixton resident I want this place to succeed but more kitchen staff are required to keep up with the basic food orders - we're talking eggs and bacon here not Michelin star dining. Good luck! visited Canova Hall on 08 Oct 2017

Reserved a table for a friend's birthday. Food, drinks and atmosphere fantastic but the service needs a lot of work. Haven't quite managed to work out the table service arrangement yet as we had to constantly get up to order more drinks and food etc. visited Canova Hall on 13 Oct 2017

I don’t normally leave reviews but the email prompted me to. I’m aware it’s only just opened so hoping my comments are useful rather than viewed as negative. Booking was difficult as no one picked up the phone when I tried to call .There was no host to greet. Service was sporadic, in attentive as it seemed there weren’t enough staff on to cover. Staff weren’t communicating as they weren’t sure what we had or what we were waiting for. The table didn’t get cleared for 25 minutes after we finished, ate pudding still with our dirty plates. Staff were friendly but it was rather haphazard. Would try again but on the hope service improved, otherwise there is enough choice in Brixton to go elsewhere. visited Canova Hall on 11 Oct 2017

Great restoration of the building and good atmosphere. Had dinner with friends on a Friday night and the music was so loud we couldn’t hear each other which hugely detracted from the evening. Food was Ok - London fields pizza had very little meatball on it! visited Canova Hall on 13 Oct 2017

Ok, as a Brixton local I like to support new businesses in the area, and being a foodie at heart I expect certain standards. I had a 9pm booking, waited 10mins to be seated, order taken we did not receive our drinks until 9:40pm. Our meals arrived 5mins late ... but only half our order. When we checked with the staff ... they advised that the rest of our order did come out but not delivered to us!! So whoever received our zucchini fries and padron peppers, I hope they were good?? But apart from this mishap the rest of the meal was good, and definitely agree the fried aubergine is amazing!! The venue is great and tunes were right up my street ... it is taking Brixton to another level and I think I like it. My husband is service focused so is giving you 2 stars, but I will give you an extra star for the vibe and extra staff probably would have been handy! Tolli visited Canova Hall on 13 Oct 2017

Don't bother going... I had to call twice to make a booking. When we arrived at the place we waited for about ten minutes in order to be seated, as the staff were preoccupied with other matters more important than seating customers. I ordered the American pancakes and received three cold, tiny (marginally larger than a 50 p coin) pancakes accompanied with three strawberries (two of which were rotten). There are plenty of other good places in Brixton to eat and whilst they may not have the same level of décor at least the food will be decent & you'll be shown to your table before you double over in hunger. visited Canova Hall on 08 Oct 2017

The table was too small for three people’s plates and drinks. The coffees took 40 minutes to come. After an hour and twenty minutes of waiting for the food, we find out one dish was not in stock and hadn’t been that morning but the waiter had forgotten and not done anything about it. The food that did arrive was average. Here are so many better brunch places in Brixton. This place was terrible. Steer clear, at least for a few months whilst they figure out how to actually run a restaurant. visited Canova Hall on 08 Oct 2017

The atmosphere and interior is fantastic- lots of space for a group at brunch. however, coffees and drinks took 10-15 mins to arrive each time, the avo on toast came without much avo, and no one really rated their food in terms of taste. service was very friendly visited Canova Hall on 07 Oct 2017

Food was great. Service was shocking. Not enough staff which is a shame as the food was great and the interior. Was full of young people who were getting very drunk. There was no authority at all. Staff were running around like headless chickens. Staff were friendly but didn't have a clue what they were doing. Nothing was left on the menu - really silly considering it's the opening week. Need to get more bouncers to walk around as people were smashing glasses everywhere- or staff needed to clear the tables. Such a shame. Had so much potential. visited Canova Hall on 06 Oct 2017

Thanks for your feedback. We were so grateful that so many people checked us out in our opening week, although this did create some challenges for us. Glad you enjoyed the food. I promise you that the staff are continuing to receive training as we go in to our third trading week, as we continue to try and improve our delivery. Thank you again for taking the time to leave a review.

Canova Hall promises so much, but currently seems to be suffering from really bad growing pains. We had booked for dinner and were told that we had the table for only two hours - which simply isn’t enough while the service is as slow as it is currently. It began when we walked through the door - the maitre d was deep in conversation with a colleague and we had to actually tap her on the shoulder to get our presence acknowledged. We were taken to a nicely sited but very small round marble table that featured a cocktail menu and a £50 decanter of punch - which we said we didn’t want. It wasn’t taken away. It took 15 minutes to have our cocktail order taken - and we and our server had to shout at each other above the music, which was already turned up to late-night level at only 8:30. We gave up hope of having a conversation. My gin cocktail was indeed very good, although my pregnant partner’s grudgingly-made mocktail was mainly pineapple juice and oversweet. By the time we had reminded our server that we needed a food menu, had ordered several dishes from the sharing menu, been told some were unavailable but not given the chance to get alternatives and then actually received our food, we had been at Canova Hall for 70 minutes. The food was generally pretty good -excellent croquettes and salads -although our zucchini fries had been sitting around and had lost their crunch, while the marmite butter served with the focaccia wasn’t a great idea. Our mistake for ordering it. We wanted more drinks but our server disappeared so rapidly we had no chance to ask for them. By the time she came back to ask how our meal was going our plates were empty and our two hours were up. Our bill came extremely quickly, to the extent that we felt as though there was an extreme eagerness to get us to part with our money. We left swiftly - we’d only had one drink and a few snacks each after all - and we finished our night with desserts and more drinks just down the road at the ever-excellent Salon. We really wanted to like Canova Hall, and probably will go back in the daytime to try to have a proper lunch as the food is good and it’s a great space. Right now it really doesn’t work as a dinner venue. Jim visited Canova Hall on 06 Oct 2017

To whom it may concern, the staff is nice, friendly and polite but after my fourth visits I truly have to write something about how long we need to wait to get our dishes: I had time to finish main course and wait 10 minutes prior my friends been served their main course. I forwarded your request for a review to my friend. I copy and paste their review below because it made me laugh and it summarises our views on the service with humour: "Hi, we did book a table and order food yesterday but we are still waiting to be served. We are in the last booth, by the window. We stayed overnight and managed to get some sleep but my friends and I really need to go to work today. We were hoping someone could bring the food. Thank you" Nice place and nice staff but service is very poor! We'll come back any way! visited Canova Hall on 24 Sep 2017

While there were a few teething problems on arrival (limited staff and a busy room), the wait for drinks and food was more than worth it. From my gorgeous tagliatelle to stunning croquettes with a rich mustard sauce, this is such a gem of a location to eat, and the interiors are bloody beautiful!

We ate at Canova Hall last night and the place was nice, drinks were great and food was OK. Service-wise it was pretty bad - we were sat for 30 minutes before we were approached for service and ended up having to go to the bar to order them separately. No water was brought to the table at any point or offered. Then when we had finished our food no one came to collect our plates or ask if we would like the bill - this again was a 20-30 minute period. A lot of potential but the service really needs to get up to scratch. Bar staff incidentally were brilliant. visited Canova Hall on 03 Oct 2017

I know it's early days but this simply wasn't good enough. We, a party of 6, went for brunch. It was over half an hour before we got our drinks and it was an hour before all our food arrived. We had a number of different waiters, none of whom seemed to have particular responsibility for our table. We had to ask once or more for everything, e.g. menus, water, the bill. And the bill was wrong. All this was a failure of management, with any sort of supervision or interest in how we were doing being notable by its absence. Most of the food was OK but using thick slices of toasted sourdough bread for sandwiches needs a rethink. visited Canova Hall on 01 Oct 2017

Oh I really really wanted to love this place. The staff are lovely, really happy and so eager. Unfortunately the food experience wasn't up to even a basic standard. 6 people for Sunday brunch, we did choose an assortment from the menu, 2 breakfast sandwich triple cooked chips, 2 pancakes, a pizza and pasta. The sandwiches arrived with the triple cooked chips. Despite being cooking three times over they were cold. Ok bad start. But staff very sorry. 10 mins later the two side orders appear, very nice. Thank god, because 20 mins later the one pasta dish arrived. Bacon sarnie finished theirs: 10 mins later we get the pancakes. Soggy bacon on the side. Pizza is lost in the ether as 3!!! Staff tell us it's on its way. Eventually after 45 mins from the first dish arriving the pizza appeared. Very nice. If you go for a lunch , not a cheap one, £11 for a Bloody Mary!!! You expect to eat together at least. 5 out of 6 of the party would not go back, the 6th is 10 years old and liked the pancake. visited Canova Hall on 01 Oct 2017

Please accept my apologies. Our weekend brunch popularity has been amazing, but this has in turn caused us some operational issues which we are working hard to improve on. Can I reach out to the 10 year old in your group and get he or she to convince the 5 others to come back for pancakes on me? If so let me know to darren@albionandeast.co.uk when you would like to come. In addition to 6 lots of pancakes I would like to soften the blow further with 3 litre’s of our frizzante for the grownups.

Hi, I know you guys have only just opened, but there are many things to iron out in my opinion: I held my birthday brunch here on Sunday 1st October - we had a large party of 18 people and it seems that your kitchen was unable to cope. Most of my guests waited for 1 hour for their food to arrive. A couple waited 1 hour and 30 minutes. Some people ordered the same dishes but they arrived looking very different, e.g. the pancakes (different sizes) and avocado on toast (different quality bread, when the sourdough ran out, you continued serving on cheap brown sliced bread whilst charging the same - I found this unacceptable). The coffee machine was apparently broken however you still served a 'flat white' that took 30 minutes to make and basically wasn't a flat white. Even when there were only 6 of us left, we ordered 5 alcoholic drinks and 1 coffee. The coffee took 15 minutes to arrive and it came cold, I asked for another and received a hotter one but it took another 15 minutes. Overall the staff were very pleasant and helpful but it was a shame about the speed of service. I should mention that the 2 dishes that were very slow were comped in the end. I hope you find this feedback useful. Thanks, Kasia kasia182@hotmail.com visited Canova Hall on 01 Oct 2017

friendly staff but food was bad. We (3 people) ordered the italian eggs in tomato sauce and then 5mins later they said they did not have any left. Then i ordered the frittata and my two friends ordered something else. Then 10mins after this order went in they said they have no frittata left (this was 3pm on sunday afternoon and you had run out of food on your menu which is not really acceptable!!). I reordered for the third and final time , the avocado on toast which was very disappointing, heardly any avocado on it at all. The menu needs more healthy choices and vegetarian choice. Everything else was good, the atmosphere, culture, service, but the food was a massive let down. visited Canova Hall on 01 Oct 2017

I can’t apologise enough for the non-available items. If you would like to give us another go I would love to get you back for Italian Baked Eggs, Beetroot Frittata, Avocado on toast and our Smokey Rigatoni (which is vegetarian without the scarmoza cheese). Please let me know if we can convince you to return darren@albionandeast.co.uk. Again, my sincere apologies.

Food was good but felt it was a little overpriced. Great atmosphere and the service was excellent - really friendly waiters. It definitely felt like a spot that'd be better for drinks than an intimate dinner for two, though. We had a 19.15 dinner slot and the music was already pumping and we were sat almost on top of the people next to us! BUT, beautifully restored building. A good experience but better for drinks than a meal for two. visited Canova Hall on 30 Sep 2017

Poor experience. Had made a booking and when we arrived the guy on the door was surprised that the booking had been taken. In the first half hour we had 4 different people come to our table and they appeared to not understand who was doing what as they were over lapping on what they were dealing with us for. We ordered our first round of drinks and they took over 20 minues to arrive. As we watched the bar and saw how long people were there it seems that there are too few bar tending staff, particularly as there are a lot of cocktails ordered. We ordered a range of items and the food was fair to middling at best. The padron papers were hot but surprisingly undercooked (my guess would be cooked at too high a temperature), two of us had the ragu which is ok but not great and the pasta was uinder cooked (crunchy), One of us had pizza and it was soft and collapsing when you tried to pick it up. Chips were great! The waitress who ended up serving us was really good and helpful. She sounded as frustrated as we were and it seemed there may not have been enough serving staff on the floor also. We were provided with a discount based on our experience however the bill only pointed out that this is not a cheap restaurant and therefore the experience should be better. I do appreciate that the restaurant is only new but this didn't appear to be a soft opening period. I hope that it improves in the future as we are local and it would be good to have somewhere like this to go to. Stuart visited Canova Hall on 29 Sep 2017

Decor was lovely but the music wasn't appropriate for brunch in my opinion - quite loud rock which didn't have us feeling relaxed. The coffee was average and we were sat right next to where it was being made so every time the grinder was turned on we couldn't hear each other. The food was really great but we waited about 40 mins for it after ordering. Service friendly but slow. Given this was only their second week I would give them another shot as there is definitely potential there! visited Canova Hall on 30 Sep 2017

It's a beautiful space but loads of "teething issues" let them down and overall it was a somewhat disappointing dining experience. We went for brunch on a Saturday. We were helped by a few people, a couple of whom were very friendly and helpful, but several of the staff did not seem trained up well enough. We had to ask for almost everything - cutlery, water (and refills for water), even glasses. A couple people ordered tea and inexplicably it took 3x as long to arrive as the people who ordered coffee. The teas finally arrived with tea bags in mugs and no teaspoons and nowhere to put the tea bags. Oh, and we had to ask for milk. The kitchen also needs to sort themselves out. Had wanted the beetroot frittata but was told it was off the menu, so 2 of us settled for the avocado toast. Nice flavours but there was a big variance in size and appearance between the 2. The baked eggs were not skilfully executed - looked (and tasted) like 2 overcooked eggs with a tin of tomatoes thrown over the top, served with toasted bread on the side, some pieces of which were charred. The smashed potatoes with taleggio and salami crumb were presented also partially charred and without the salami crumb, so we had to ask them to bring them separately. The high point were the bloody marys, however I imagine some people might not be as keen as we were on the bacon garnish so probably best to ask if it should be included or not. Admittedly I'm doing a lot of nit-picking here but it's such a lovely space I'm hoping they can sort out their issues as I would like to go back sometime when things are better. Otherwise it's just not worth the relatively premium cost when there are so many great, dependable places nearby to eat and drink. visited Canova Hall on 23 Sep 2017

Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your experience. Please accept my personal apologies and let me re assure you we are working hard with all of our team, to improve our food quality and the execution. We are aware of some of the problems you experienced, especially at our peak sessions. We are still very much in our infancy but this is by no means an excuse for the experience you describe above. I would love to attempt to try and get you back. If you can e mail me directly at darren@albionandeast I hope that we can have another go at getting it right.

Food was delicious but service needs improvement. Waited long time for drinks and then they forgot another drink order during the meal. visited Canova Hall on 27 Sep 2017

Over priced, slow and incompetent staff. They had "run out of tap water", which was fun given the overly hot pizza - which in itself was undercooked, bland and topped with a watery sauce. The pasta was of a measerley portion for the £12+ pricing, with very watery sauce - the request for no dairy seemed to be not-so-amusingly ignored. £6 for a draught beer - which costs £4.75 not 200 metres away. Music was too loud and inappropriate given the dinner setting. Cool sign, so 1 star.

I wasn't keen on the menu or the service or the Bloody Mary with a piece of bacon in it. I hope it improves Vicky visited Canova Hall on 23 Sep 2017

Great service. Really nice surroundings. My pizza (a white smokey ham/potato/sage one) was a little bit bland. Felt like it needed something else. Everyone else really liked theirs. Thank you very much! visited Canova Hall on 19 Sep 2017
