One of Tooting’s oldest pubs, The Castle has been part of the Young’s estate since 1832 and has an exciting history; American film actor, director and producer, John Wayne is known for frequenting The Castle in the 1940s. In the 1970s, the pub had an excellent reputation for live music and hosted the ‘Tooting Blues Club’.

They have a contemporary yet cosy area at the front of the pub for relaxed drinks, meeting friends after work or just whiling away the hours. Behind the main bar, there are two gleaming Meantime ‘Brewery Fresh’ tanks that not only look impressive, but dispense fresh lager straight to the bar for you to try.

Theirr smart Restaurant area leads into the bright airy conservatory room known as The Orangery, both of which provide fantastic spaces to enjoy their fantastic food with full table service. A sociable Chef’s Table, opposite the kitchen pass is perfect for small drinks parties, dining and tasting events. They have a beautiful, big beer garden with a patio and al fresco dining options. In addition, there are eight heated huts with seating, two of which have their own fires and drink fridges.

I booked in for 8 people this Sunday (23rd) as I had heard great things. Booking over the phone was great and the person on the other end very friendly. Decor and menu are fab. Unfortunately that is where the good bits end. We turned up and were seated by a woman. She was very abrupt and told us there was an hours wait on food (which is fine as could see how busy you were). She then told us if we were hungry we had best order some starters. We asked for a couple of minutes as hadn't thought about ordering starters until she told us the wait time and we were told in a very direct way, no. If we wanted starters in a good time frame then we had to order now. She didn't take the time to make recommendations or explain the menu. If she had we would have realised that what we ordered was not enough for the table. Our food took around an hour and 20 minutes. Again this is fine however it would have been nice to have been checked back on during that time for drinks. Food was great apart from one of our party. We didn't get the chance to rectify this as nobody did a check back. We didn't see our rude waitress again until she came to take payment by which she asked how we were paying the tip. We always tip as most of us have worked in the service industry at some point but the way she demanded how we were paying it left all of us open mouthed. My friend left a bank card there, she has called today and was spoken to atrociously by whoever answered. Great venue with great potential. Lack of a great service means I wouldn't go back or recommend as manners cost absolutely nothing. If you don't like your job (our waitress clearly didn't) then don't do it. Held a babyshower here for my friend and there was 14 of us in all-whilst the booking process etc was smooth and the reminder emails very professional the actual event was a bit of a let down. I was allowed to decorate the area in the morn which was lovely. When we arrived we had drinks order taken and then we then were informed there was at least a 30min wait for food-ok it was a sat at 2pm but we had booked the table so not a surprise to the place-the waitress said she would bring over some breads and oils to keep us going which we thought was a nice touch (however we were charged for them when the bill came!) and we then ordered mains and got on with having a babyshower. The group orders from both the main menu and the sandwich menu-and to our horror 5 people who ordered the chicken and stuffing sandwich found bones in the chicken mixture-ok if it was fish you would kind of expect this or if it was stated in the menu may contain small boned then fine-when the first was found we called over the waitress and she was apologetic and said she would inform the chef-she sald the reason was because they are using fresh chicken (not sure what else they would use-its a chicken sandwich!) then as time went on it became almost a joke as each person in turn found bones!! The waitress did take these off the bill but my friend whos babyshower it was, was really upset and embrassed by it as its all everyone was talking about-the bones in the sarnies and no one who had the sandwiches finished them for fear of finding more bones. Seeing as so many had been effected it would have been nice if maybe the manager etc had come and apologised-and explained how on earth it had happened-its a godsent no one choked on one-we know st georges is an amazing hospital but we didnt fancy a trip there on a sat afternoon! Ive not been to the castle for years-it was a recommendation from my mum who lives in tooting and has been a few times with work colleagues. Cant change what happened with food-but service wasnt bad-might give it a go again if Im in the area-I feel I owe my friend another meal! visited The Castle Tooting on 22 Oct 2016

You're not supped to leave a restaurant in a more miserable state than when you arrived but unfortunately I did. Having booked a table on a Sunday, I waited more than an hour for my food. As a customer, whether the restaurant is busy or not should have no relevance to me. It should be invisible. A visit to a restaurant isn't the food, it's the whole event and it was below par. The manager came over and apologised ay some point. Rather than listening to what I tried to described, all I got was fobbing off and a feeling that because I had paid, they didn't care as they had the money in the bag. What kind of restaurant is that? The fact that it was my Mum's birthday just made the whole experience twice as bad as is actually was. Sorry but that's the truth. I doubt if they will publish this one, but hats off if they do. visited The Castle Tooting on 16 Oct 2016

Lovely meal as always. Recommendation though, for vegetarians, please have veggie friendly gravy available. This was something that my friend found very annoying as it meant her veggie roast was very dry. visited The Castle Tooting on 16 Oct 2016
