Best Beer Garden 2014/15 - DesignMyNight Awards

The People’s Park Tavern is a village pub and brewery beside Victoria Park in the heart of East London, serving hearty, traditional pub food as well as a range of our own brewed People’s Pints.

Inspired by the park itself – created as it was for the ordinary people of the East End – Victoria Park received the moniker the People’s Park, and this is where we take our name.

Expect great beer, hearty roasts, DJs every weekend and fun in the super cool hacienda garden, voted one of the best in London by many publications.

We came for a family lunch on Saturday, and had an ok time if I'm honest. Your staff were super efficient without being overly warm or welcoming, and the speed of drinks service was excellent. However there were only 5 things left on the menu by the time we ate, and whilst we were warned there would be a 45 min wait on food we still waited over an hour. The food was nice when it came, but charging £13.50 for your burgers is very overpriced I would say. I'd come for a drink again as the garden area is really nice, but definitely not for food. visited People's Park Tavern on 02 Jul 2017

Booked a big table for a birthday and the whole experience was really fun, I would definitely go again. The host is very filthy so it certainly isn't for the shy! Be warned it is hot in the upstairs room but the bar downstairs is nice and cool. Bellinis were nice and the staff were quick to top up, the bloody mary is pre mixed and they have no extra sauce so if you were hoping for something really nice then stick to the Bellini! I went for the full english which was okay but the Florentine/Benedict dishes were really nicely cooked! They do all of the food at the same time. Paying in advance is good so then it's all sorted and you haven't got to awkwardly work out a bill in the end. visited People's Park Tavern on 17 Jun 2017

Attended the bottomless bingo brunch on Saturday and it was great fun! The drinks were flowing the whole time and service was good. The only real let down was the food, it took over two hours for us to receive our meal that we had pre-ordered several days before. My bread was burnt and it certainly wasn't the nicest brunch I've had. I would definitely recommend it for a cheap boozy day but don't go expecting great food! I always like this Pub, is my second celebration in there, the first it was Baby Shower and last Monday my b-day. Everything would be perfect if the kitchen didn't closed. We are 12 people's arrived at between 1-2 pm and got food only 5.30pm bit disappointed but the rest all good. visited People's Park Tavern on 29 May 2017

We had a party of 6 including 2 children and we made 2 separate orders for food so that the children could have food as soon as - as discussed with the bar staff - he did warn 'there was a bit of wait' which was fine with us - thence the 2no separate food orders. The adults could wait acknowledging the busy sunny sunday afternoon. The food for the kids came in 50min later (sausage and mash) despite chasing a couple of times and only 5min before the adults' roasts. The sausages were overcooked, dry and barely hot. The staff made it up with desserts on the house - which was a nice touch -but the hunger drove the kids very difficult forthe rest of the day which left us a bit bitter. visited People's Park Tavern on 14 May 2017

Love the venue and the staff were so sweet despite it being the busiest place in London (or so it seemed)! My only critic would be that we booked for 12 and there wasn't enough space on the table so people had to stand. visited People's Park Tavern on 13 May 2017

We had been playing cricket in the park beforehand - and weren't quite finished. We asked that we could move the booking back an hour and were told this would be fine. When we turned up, they had given our table away. The guy in charge of table bookings was very accommodating, and luckily we found a table to sit most of our party. Other than that, the burgers were great, and we had a good time. visited People's Park Tavern on 13 May 2017

the area I booked wasn't the one we were allocated. It was a busy day but we have little ones and ended up having to stay outside as inside was mayham. Kitchen was overwhelmed and didn't take orders for over one hour, the BBQ outside cleverly opened only at 3pm on a busy Sunday !! When the food eventually arrived it was great - yet three hours late. staff was nice and polite but I wouldn't rush back anytime soon - not if you have babies. The changing facilities in the ladies toilet are appaling - the mat is basically under the hand drier which makes it super awkward for anyone wanting to dry their hands, and very scary for the baby - Ill thought out all together. visited People's Park Tavern on 07 May 2017

Had a confirmed Booking for 7 people. They called me 1 hour before hand saying that they could not honour the booking. Supposedly a partial power cut which on checking was not detailed elsewhere . Very suspicious and very annoying, visited People's Park Tavern on 20 Nov 2016

Reply from People's Park Tavern

Hello, Firstly let us apologise for putting you out on that Sunday, it was a very unfortunate set of circumstances which lead to us not having power. It wasn’t until around 11am that we discovered that we were not sure if we would be able to open and so needed to then call all our bookings. The reason you would not have found it detailed else where as it turned out not to be a cut but rather a large amount of water getting into the cellar and drowning our switch board which ended up having to make us replace all our electrics and we ended up being closed for 5 days. Hopefully you found somewhere else for lunch that day and you will come back and visit us now we have power again.

The communication was dreadful. I made a booking online for a teepee for 30 people. I callled the pub several times to discuss the booking and was told it may have no heating and light, I was told to send an email who someone who could confirm this who then did not phone me back. It took me making another call to confirm things. On the day of the booking I got a text 1 hour before the meal saying there had been a power cut and we could not have food. I had to redirect 30 people who were already on their way. I then got no response to my calls or reply text. I appreciate the power cut was not the fault of the pub but the booking process and communication was not great. Really disappointing. visited People's Park Tavern on 20 Nov 2016

Reply from People's Park Tavern

Hello, Sorry you felt let down by our service regarding your booking and that you had to redirect your group. Upon realising at around 11am on Sunday morning that we would possibly not have power on for Sundays service I promptly called every one of our bookings we had in that day. Some I did not get an answer so I sent them a text message so they atleast knew what was going on. If you had then called the pub phone it would have rung on your end but not ours as we had no power. As far as the previous lack of communication goes I will make sure I bring this up with my bookings team and investigate what happened so we can ensure it doesn’t happen again.

We go to the People's Park Tavern quite a lot on Sundays and the food is always great - but this time the food took too long to arrive in fact it was about an hour and a half from ordering to being served, which when you have 2 small children to feed is not acceptable, so been warned. Having asked on a few occasions we didn't even get any apology , not great customer service I'm afraid. visited People's Park Tavern on 09 Oct 2016

Hey, We are really sorry that the food wait let us down on this occasion and that the response from our team wasnt good enough. Hopefully, as you have been here quite a lot, you will see that this isnt a usual thing for us and you will come back and give us another chance soon.

We enjoyed our visit. The tavern is disabled friendly and very easy to access including a disabled toilet. Good food although table service would have made things easier (for drinks as well). Coffee needs to be served hot. Ambience great and the band, As Good as Gold were fantastic. visited People's Park Tavern on 09 Oct 2016

Thats great that you enjoyed your visit and we try and make the pub as accessable for everyone as possible so good news that we did that! Unfortunantly we dont offer table service but if it would make it easier for you so you didnt need to come to the bar then please let us know when you come in and we would be more than happy to help out.

Initially booked an area outdoors for 30 to celebrate my 30th Birthday however, with the weather looking shakey leading up to the Saturday concerns built up we'd suffer. The Peoples' staff were really helpful on Friday and moved the booking in to the Taproom situated upstairs. This ended up being the ideal party venue as we could still venture out but had the room to ourselves with a bar, incredible choice of beers/ciders, an N64 (4 player) and have also become semi-pro bar billiard players by the time we left! Having already had high expectations based on friends' previous experiences, this surpassed even those and would recommend coming here rain or shine; you won't be disappointed.

Booked a table for 10 of us for Sunday lunch in the garden. It was a really busy afternoon at the pub (as expected on a sunny day) but unfortunately this meant that when we went to order food we were told that the kitchen was temporarily closed. Shame that we had to wait so long to order lunch, when my booking was specifically for food! Food was great when it eventually came but shame to have to wait so long... was tempted to order deliveroo to the pub at one stage! Jemma visited People's Park Tavern on 11 Sep 2016

Booked for 40 people on Saturday: it was busy, yet the service was outstanding. The beer garden is stunning, there's something there to please everyone (cocktails, craft beers, frozen margaritas), the food was also lovely. Special huge thanks to Gianfranco who was the nicest - super friendly, super helfpul. I've been a few times so I know I'll be back, but I think all my 40 odd guests are equally impressed. Great night out, we went down on a Tuesday and bagged a table outside. Had some great beers and th e service was slick too. They also have Crazy Golf at the back of the Garden too that is amazing. The Garden is one of the best Pub Gardens I have ever seen, heated huts for if it's cold, huge open astro turf area for when its hot, table fusball and a micro brewery. I can see why it has won so many awards. Will be heading back a lot now. Well done guys......

This is one of my favourite pubs thanks to its atmosphere, layout, food and drinks on offer. So it was an obvious choice to bring friends who were visiting London last Sunday. We had a delicious roast dinner - a whole roast chicken shared between four, with lovely veg, gravy and potatoes, washed down with a couple of ciders. I'd advise booking a table in advance on a Sunday as does get busy! The pub is lovely and cosy inside but also has a pretty outdoor heated area, with sofas and huts and a decent sized beer garden beyond that. Great that the pub is right by Victoria Park too, a perfect location for walking off that Sunday roast! Amie visited People's Park Tavern on 07 Feb 2016

Lovely place for drinks not for food though. We had mussels with wine and bacon, bacon was only fat and wine wasnt well absorbed - pulled pork for 2 people with roast vegetables. vegetables were overcooked and pork to dry and last chicken with vegetables not so good either.

Fantastic wine really nice venue, but staff are unbelievable, was asked to leave at closing time, explained that I'd only just been give a number for the local cab company to a response of "you don't look like your going anywhere" I said "I'm on the phone to the company now, just given to me by staff" which they seemed even more rude suggesting that I was lying!! Ended up in an argument with them calling me a liar!! I've just spent £120 in the venue, I can not believe the treatment I've just received! I will not be returning... Oh I own a pub in Islington called the North Nineteen so I do have an informed view on pub management and customer relations

Pub is really cool. However the whole evening was ruined by a local posing as a bouncer and threatening to beat up my friends as we were leaving. The actual bouncers did nothing to intervene and were pretty aggressive. The pub is great. I would recommend you leave way before closing so you don't get caught up in anything unwanted.

Sunday roast was hugely overpriced for what it was, staff were extremely rude, abrupt and unhelpful. Nice in the Summer when the beer garden is open. Wouldn't recommend. Wish it was still The Britannia.

Went for a Sunday roast and the food was great. Obviously, with a brewery on site, the selection of beers was fantastic. The New Zealand Pale Ale was particularly good. The only downside was that our table seemed like a last-minute location decision and was kinda stuck in the walkway from washrooms to bar, even though we booked online. As expected, Sundays are very busy, but love dropping by mid-week. Good time has by all!

HI Brad, we're really pleased that you enjoyed your Sunday roast and beers - we're really proud of them both. Unfortunately it can be a bit of a squeeze to get everyone in. Let us know when you book again and we'll get you a different table.

Great pub, good food however we were really disappointed by the lack of choice for kids menu. It meant ordering adult meals which went half eaten, and our bill was unnecessarily expensive as a result. This has always been a child friendly family place on the park. Please don't forget your customers with kids. There's a lot of us!

No children's menu and the items we did order for the children came out frozen (haddock croquette) or raw (sausage) in the middle. The manager did take it off the bill but not sure we'd risk it again. The place was filled with smoke when we arrived. It was also the second time we gave it a go. First time food took over an hour to arrive. Find the staff a bit away with the fairies. Service isn't great. There are better pubs in the area so we won't be going back.

Great time had by all. Staff really friendly, and didn't mind us changing tables twice. Backyard BBQ was tasty. Will be back for pub quiz soon. Best beer garden in London!

Very happy to find this little gem! Own brewed beers, big drink selection and amazing garden. Disappointed in the very dirty toilets, but food was great and would definitely come back (just put some money into improving ur facilities)!

Hi Roxi, we take cleanliness very seriously and hope you were just unlucky on a busy day. In the last month we've had a huge clean of every corner so now the whole place sparkles.

Came here with a big group of tired friends after a game of rounders in the park and despite being worried about the possible lack of seating on a sunny day at a pub near a park, there were a couple of benches free. I had a really nice expresso stout and a massive burger with pulled pork and crackling in it; just the thing for after a long day running around in Victoria Park. The vibe here was really upbeat, with lots of children running around, loads of friendly dogs in the garden to pet, and loads of smiling faces behind the bar. I'll definitely return, hopefully the atmosphere is just as jubilent even when the sun isn't shining!

This is actually my local. Rating wise for the garden & new decor I would rate 5. For the food however... 2x I had to send back fish & chips due to the fish being raw & cold inside. (this was a child's portion) You could clearly see that the fish was jelly like due to be under cooked. The 2nd offering was worse than the 1st. The bar staff gave me some great feed back from the chef though.. According to the chef the fish was cooked.. There are going to be a lot of ill people if that's classed as 'cooked' on a lighter note the staff were great. Very polite & helpful.

Hi Jacqui, sorry your food wasn't as you wanted. Our chefs and managers are all fully trained in food hygiene, and we haven't had reports of people getting ill. Since this review we've got a new chef, who is absolutely superb, and new management so we hope that as you like the decor and the garden so much you'll try us again.
