This has now closed! So sad as it was a fantastic place which had a live band and a great DJ after, quirky cocktails and amazing food, but unfortunately it's now closed. This website hasn't updated this page.

I was a little disappointed that we missed the entertainment, started just as we left at 9pm. Also, I requested a special birthday cocktail for my sisters 40th and that didn't happen :( ... plus the case &a status cocktail offer I asked for, which is on the menu doesn't actually exist yet! But food was lovely and cocktails were amazing! visited Steam and Rye on 25 Mar 2017

The waitress Amy was nice but the food wasn't great and the cocktails weren't as I expected. In fact two of them never came in the glasses they were meant to, just in a basic tumbler and another one wasn't like the pictures on line at all. When we questioned this the bar staff looked at us in an unpleasant way and told us we were wrong even after showing him the picture !! visited Steam and Rye on 25 Mar 2017

The food was poor, 3 of us were dining there and each and every one of us were very unimpressed and the venue was freezing cold. So much so that all of the staff had their coats on, not conducive to an enjoyable lunch. Don't think we will be dining with you again! visited Steam and Rye on 22 Mar 2017

It was amazing! Had my birthday dinner the cocktails were to die for, and I loved the fact that me and my friends could ride the bull. It's something different. The staff at Steam & Rye were great. Our table was waiting for us as soon as we arrived and we had cocktails in our hands within about 5 minutes. The food was delicious with generous portion sizes too. And the main bar area was a lively and fun place to hang out after our meal. visited Steam and Rye on 18 Mar 2017

I want to thank everyone! But a special thank you to the amazing Norwegian blond lady that served us! She sorted out another table for us with more seats and was so helpful through out the evening. Also a massive thank you to the lovely lady at the door. We all had a great time. You do really have the best staff working at steam and rye. We were so looked after. The bouncers were very fussy when we walked in, not allowing two girls in front of us in for no reason. 7 of us were shown to our table upstairs away from any entertainment so it was pretty boring as the place is known for entertainment. Then we ordered our food and you can tell they have a time limit on the table. I was no where near finished and my friends had all there plates were removed which left me feeling quite awkward. To which the waiter come along and took the side dish presuming I had finished and didn't even ask. Service was poor and to think they wack a service charge on top they do not deserve visited Steam and Rye on 18 Mar 2017

Visited for a lunch with a colleague. It was very bright inside and very lacking in atmosphere. There were plenty of what seemed like 'management' staff around but only one waitress running around. We had to wait a long time for our drinks which we could see sat on the bar, and the food wait was very long. When we did eventually get the food, there was a hair on my starter!!! Some items were missing and I would not say the quality justified the price. Overall very disappointing and I would not go here again. visited Steam and Rye on 14 Mar 2017

I would never go here again. Ever. I cannot stress that enough! I booked here a good month or so in advance for a birthday, and it ruined the evening. We were greeted at the door by a very rude member of staff (and her clipboard) who proceeded to look us up and down, finding no faults in our smart/casual attire she took it upon herself to deem men's Chelsea boots unacceptable to wear in the establishment - when contested, the bouncer (who I can only imagine, silently agreed she was as uptight as she seemed) let us in... And the first thing I saw? A man in white trainers and several in Chelsea boots - the horror! Such peasants daring to bring down this 'classy' venue(!) Not only were we seated in the wrong area (really what is the point in emailing/confirming over a month in advance with the customer where they want to be seated if you're not going to adhere to it?) but the food was overpriced, slow, underwhelming and salted to the max - I guess they want to ensure their customers order several of their obnoxious cocktails to forget about their terrible experience DO NOT order the dry burgers (at almost £16 they don't come with sauce or cheese) and I wouldn't even bother thinking about dessert! £5 for the chocolate strawberry sorbet cone AKA one scoop of sorbet in a cone, with two wafer thin slices of chocolate The only reason it's not one star is the blue cheese wedge salad, at £6.50 it's overpriced for a stack of iceberg lettuce with a few croutons, a smidge of bacon and lashings of blue cheese sauce BUT it did taste good, I guess I'm a sucker for cheese though? Still, not even cheese could redeem this awful venue, and trust me.. That's saying something! Overall, I would avoid, unless of course, you're planning to dine on average food, whilst overly loud S-Club tracks create ambience and you don't mind being greeted (or rejected) by a horse with a clipboard visited Steam and Rye on 25 Feb 2017

Went for a birthday dinner last night in the restaurant area. Great service from our waitress (I don't know her name but she was brunette and friendly) , food and drinks were good, our table was right by the window overlooking the club bit which we were happy with! The music was soooo good, from the live band to the dj. Would definitely come back just for the music / indoor staff who were really upbeat and helpful. But great music for sure. Only thing I would fault steam and rye on are their doormen. We had to wait in a queue in the cold and rain (despite having pre booked dinner reservations) while there was some ongoing dispute with the people in front. One person in our party was 8 months pregnant so it was unfair to make her stand and wait. The doormen were quite rude and snappy. This lead to us being late to our table. But once inside- lovely night had by all! Would definitely come back on a Saturday. Thank you! visited Steam and Rye on 25 Feb 2017

Music was excellent! Great band, and the DJ music was very good too! Service was pretty poor. We had a booth and it took 30mins for someone to even come over and see if we wanted to order, but we had to ask them to come over! Drinks were great! Food was average. Our server wasn't very good at all, very rude and made us feel guilty if we wanted something and she had to go and get it. Pretty sure it's her job. It was only little things like getting a jug of water for the table, getting the card machine for us to pay... not impressed. Overall was okay. I wouldn't be booking a table there again, maybe just come in for a drink next time. visited Steam and Rye on 22 Feb 2017

Food was awful. Asked for a medium burger, it was practically raw. Our server was nice, but weird, it didn't feel like a restaurant dinner? I would've had a much better experience going to a local 5guys or GBK and spent a lot less money. Cocktails were pretty shit as well, they tasted awful, and the entire cocktail was full of ice with about two mouthfuls or actual drink. We had the plan to stay for the entire night, but immediately left to find a bar elsewhere to continue with a much nicer valentines evening. Don't think I would return again. visited Steam and Rye on 14 Feb 2017

The food wasn't as good as it usually was and the staff seemed to be very confused asking questions like what sauce I'd like with the steak when only one was on the menu and not knowing any other options but not asking how the steak should be cooked, they also forgot things on the order too. Cocktails were great as always though and the music was good. Was disappointed that the advertising email offered bottomless ribs, shrimp and wings but these weren't offered when I turned up. dmac visited Steam and Rye on 14 Feb 2017

The good part - our waitress was absolutely lovely and couldn't do enough for us and the food was OK too nothing special but nice for what is was. Now the bad part. We booked a drinks table for my sisters suprise 30th birthday promised balloons and a bit of a fuss we have the meal and was then told actually the booking didn't get completed properly after a 20 minute call arranging it we didn't have any where to sit. We did have the option to speak to a manager however by that point the evening was ruined and the place was already packed therefore complaining wouldn't have given us the result we wanted. We ended up calling it a night after only a meal. Also drinks are very expensive £12.50 for a cocktail which was literally cup of ice a shot of something and cream with an icelolly on the top. Over all experience was very poor and I would recommend people to consider all options before "booking" to avoid the disappointment we had. visited Steam and Rye on 11 Feb 2017

The staff were very attentive & the cocktails are fab! It had a good atmosphere & the music was good. What spoilt it for me was I ordered a chilli burger done medium. When it arrived it was barely warm let alone hot so it went back. When it came out the second time it was hot yes but rarer than I like & there was no BBQ sauce on it. I asked for mayonnaise but never got it. I'd come again for drinks but not food. Adding on the service charge without the option to amend or cancel it is abit cheeky to be honest. visited Steam and Rye on 04 Feb 2017

Was so excited to take my husband here for his 30th birthday (having come down from Chester on the Saturday morning) for some reason we were sat in the room upstairs alone with absolutely no music or atmosphere while there was music and tables downstairs. I was very disappointed as we were both really looking forward to celebrate his 30th in style and left after 2 drinks to go somewhere else with a bit more lively atmosphere. The food was nice (although could have been slightly warmer) and the service was good but was just disappointing being sat in an empty dark room for our meal. visited Steam and Rye on 04 Feb 2017

Came on a Friday night for a catch up with a friend. We booked a take to eat. The food was fine and the cocktails are great! However our table was right in the main bar and it is to noisy, tables for eating should be else where in the building so you can talk to each other across the table. The service was also not good as every one has a designated task and won't help with requests out side of those. It's good for a cocktail but I would not recommend for food or if you want to have any kind of conversation visited Steam and Rye on 03 Feb 2017

I went to Steam and Rye for my birthday this past weekend. I called a couple of weeks before to book a table for dinner, and the girls I dealt with over the phone were all friendly, informative, and prompt when calling me. When we got there on the night, we had dinner first and then enjoyed the main bar and the smaller bar below as well. Food was delicious, wait staff were attentive, and the cocktails were awesome and inventive. Being American, I felt right at home with the theme and fun decor. The main bar had a great vibe with live music first and then some old school tunes from about 10 years ago that were great to sing along and dance to. We then went to the bottom floor that was less crowded and had its own bar too. There was an area that was reserved and had a bouncer nearby, but no one was sat there. I asked nicely to use it and that we would only be there for a bit as we were leaving in a half hour to catch the last train, and he was nice enough to let us chill there. They had fun props on the table to take selfies with and some party poppers too! All in all, a great night and everyone kept saying how cool the venue was (my friend made a rest recommendation). The only downsides were the main bar being overly crowded and hot and the fact that drinks were quite pricey, but I expected this for central London. I'd happily go back with other friends or even for all you can eat shrimp and bbq on Tuesday nights for £20 pp! Thanks for a great birthday :) Melissa visited Steam and Rye on 28 Jan 2017

We went 7ish on a Friday night following a friends recommendation. Door staff were unecessarily rude. We went to our table and it was surrounded by people drinking. The music was on at night club levels despite how early it was. We actually left before ordering any food as we didn't want to waste our evening shouting at each other across the table. The waitress was lovely when I explained why we were leaving, which was the high point of the visit. Good bar that's serves food. Not a restaurant. visited Steam and Rye on 20 Jan 2017

Never one to moan but this restaurant has the potential to be perfect so for that reason I want to voice my concerns. Service is on the verge of being poor, constantly trying to get someone's attention but despite that the cocktails are so much fun. I felt as if the servers were not interested in you unless you were part of a big groups in the booths, the very camp waiter was amazing loved his dancing (asset to the business) The lady in the black sequinned dress possibly a manager needs to smile and needs far better people skills. x visited Steam and Rye on 21 Jan 2017

It was Friday. The place was nice and Alex served us very well. The live music between 8 and 9 was good too but too loud and we couldn't speak almost at all, so many left. The djset was very cool and we had lots of fun. The place was a little empty at moments. visited Steam and Rye on 20 Jan 2017

We turned up at 6pm on thursdays for dinner and we the music was so loud that we had to shout to each other for the next 2 hours we were there. I asked for a well done burger and it came burnt! My wife ordered a lobster sandwich for £20, the toast was warm but the lobster mix was from the fridge...I could have bought a cold sandwich from tesco if I wanted. The toilets we well below standard. The only thing I can praise are the staff as they were very friendly. visited Steam and Rye on 19 Jan 2017

Extended happy hour was advertised on Facebook, I phoned and asked about the passes and was told they would be available on the night, when we arrived I asked again and was told we didn't need them and that happy hour was until 8pm. Just after 7pm we were charged full price and the barman argued with us that firstly that the offer wasn't valid on a Saturday, then said we needed the cards! In the end another staff member got us some cards but it felt as though the bar staff didn't want to stick with the offer! We spent over £300 on our table, the bar staff are rude and let down the venue. visited Steam and Rye on 14 Jan 2017

We booked a table for a meal at 5.30 on Friday. The waitresses were wonderful and the service helpful but unfortunately this was the only stand out thing about our evening. Unfortunately (i think we may have been under a speaker) I was unable to hear a single word that my sister said over dinner and this made the evening very uncomfortable. Unable to eat dairy, I was surprised to find that two of my cocktails arrived with cream on the top, even though this was not mentioned in the menu. The waitress was helpful both times and changed my drink but this was incredibly inconvenient given the long turnaround times to ordering a drink. . Both my sister and I ordered a burger (rare) and my sister ordered one medium. When my meal cam I was fully expecting a hot oozing bloody burger but unfortunately my food was rather cold and damp. Having ordered a rare burger many ties I was disappointedly unable to finish my refrigerator cold burger. At the antithesis of tis, my sisters medium rare burger was so unbelievably overcooked that she was unable to eat the charred meat inside her bun. Both of us found ourselves unable to finish our meals. It was such a shame that the inferior products let down the excellent staff at this establishment but I hope that others enjoy a more satisfying experience than our own. 1. Entertainment = 3 2. Cocktails = 3 3. Food = n/a 4. Staff - 0 (rude, obnoxious) This includes the manager! 5. Service - 0 - what service?? Was non existent!! The only service we did have was our very first order to our table and then when your rude barman decided to come and clear away full drinks/ bottles ...absolutely disgusting service! And then after having to call the manager to get our near full bottles back, he gave it back (with alot of attitude) no glasses, no mixers basically standing there with bottles we couldnt drink What day did you come down? Extremely slow service considering we had 2 hours on the table took a good half an hour to even get drinks we were ushered away very quickly even though it was the slowness of the staff that was delaying us. Couldn't find our food requests, and brought us 2 wrong starters leaving one of us finishing before the other plates arrived. Food was really good however. Bouncers were rude. The amount of people in there was ridiculous. We were so hot we felt faint and there was no where to sit as all tables were reserved. We ended up leaving at 11.30 (NYE) as we were so uncomfortable. So, I called steam & rye weeks in advance as this was going to be our final destination on a works Christmas party. Booked onto the guest list to ensure entry. As a group we arrived at steam & rye & because our ratio was higher of men in our group compared to females a bouncer told us quite rudely we weren't allowed in as there were too many men. I tried to explain we were on the guest list & how it was a works Christmas party. He just looked at me & said you aren't coming in. I was so annoyed considering I was never asked what the possible ratio of men vs woman I didn't think it would be an issue. To plan a Christmas night out & then to be let down by the final/key destination was so disappointing & annoying. visited Steam and Rye on 22 Dec 2016

Booked for a birthday meal, wasn't told that a large part of the restaurant was closed for a Christmas party. Waitress was annoyed someone sent us upstairs she said she didn't know we were coming. I showed confirmation email. Food was nice. But service was awful! We were told 15 mins after we ordered our desert that the kitchen was now closed because of the big party so didn't get the desert. IT was not the best place to have guest, not to my standards. I thinks expectations are high and the overall delivery and customer service is poor. I order a projector and I did not have one, I order food which I was told is very generous portions and it came out very small and little. I have ordered token for the drinks, and I end up with nothing but last minute tokens that had not price on it. The whole party was a total caos, service very poor and attitude from the waiter really hostile, not welcome at all. Asking for drinks felt like a punishment for the waiting time to get one. I didn't even get my bill of the night, so I have no idea how my money was spend. I feel cheated. Very bad experience for a pretentious place. A lot of work to do to be at a high standards. It was a wonderful afternoon the food was delicious. The dining room was fantastic and the service was mostly ok, apart from when the waitress poured wine on my friends beer, she did apologise and brought my friend the exact same amount of beer as was in the glass when she poured the wine in on top of it which was maybe 7millilitres, when my friend questioned her she about This she said that she done this because that was the amount of beer that was in glass before she poured wine in it after she insisted that if he wanted another beer he would be charged he said it was ok and not to worry, 2 minutes later she came back with another beer begrudgingly, she didn't replace the wine that was lost topping the beer up though. Towards the end we ordered desserts and we were told That there would be more than a 20 minute wait because they needed to serve the bigger tables first, therefore we all cancelled our dessert orders. All in all it was a lovely expirence and I would definitely go again bar the few hiccups visited Steam and Rye on 14 Dec 2016

The food was great - I would even recommend to share a main if you are getting a three course meal. The drinks were very overpriced for what you get but the cocktails are worth getting for celebratory reasons. We came down on the 6th December 2016 for a team Christmas Dinner, the service we had received up until our booking wasn't great; we had a few issues where the menu wasn't clear and we ask that the choices be honoured considering it was the mistake of Steam & Rye that the formatting was incorrect, but it wasn't. Following that, two of our team members could unfortunately not come due to personal reasons, this was explained but again, there was no budge on their standard policy which is no refund. They did however add it to our bar bill. Once we were there, the staff on hand were amazing; super cheerful, and although our table was 45 mins late, the gave us 4 bottles of wine for free to make up for it. Everyone was so lovely, they really went out of their way to make us have a good time as there weren't many people there... Finally, the only hiccup was that they used our bar tab on the service charge which again, I felt was a bit cheeky, but they happily gave it back to us. We did of course leave a tip, unfortunately not everyone in the team remembered to leave their bit so it wasn't as much as we would have liked, but honestly i must stress how great a service we got on the night! Great fun and definitely worth going on the bucking bronco! visited Steam and Rye on 06 Dec 2016

There were 4 of us having our Christmas catch up. The staff at the front desk were lovely & friendly as were the staff & service upstairs. We had a great table by the big window accommodating my claustrophobia & the food was good, huge stake portions, managed half of it. We went downstairs & it was good until it got busy, the heating must have been on as we were sweltering just standing around, too hot to dance. We finally left at 11 exactly because of that, it was just way, way too hot, sauna like. The only other bad point to make is the security who told me off for sitting on a chair by the booth to tie up my shoe lace. I had asked the people there & they nodded in agreement. However I was not allowed to take the 1 min to do this by the security lady, who was uninterested as to why I was there or hearing I had asked. I finally had to sit on the step leading from the booths to the dance floor, opposite the stage, where any of the patrons or staff carrying the big shark head od drinks could have tripped over me in the dark. I told the security this was a Health & Safety hazard but they didn't care....good thing no one did trip over me, as it was packed. Or as i wasnt allowed to tie my sholace anywhere i could have also tripped over causing an injury to myself &/or some else. But by the look of it I would probably have been manhandled out on the pretence of drunkenness or trouble. We had had 2 bottles of prosecco between 4 in 4hrs so it wasn't the case. It did sour my over all experience there. There could have been a nice pleasant way to deal that part. Nice place, liked but wouldn't go back in a hurry. visited Steam and Rye on 25 Nov 2016

Over priced, a waitress with a constant resting bitch face and they didn't let my 24 year old friend in for our 6pm RESTURANT booking as he didn't have ID. Not to mention the fact I didn't get a free birthday cocktail which I was promised. If booking, ASK for downstairs seating- we were upstairs and it's dark, boring and the waitress just stares at you! The food was bog standard, I wouldn't rush back for it. The cocktails were were great, however far too sweet and contained way too much ice!! The ground floor was packed and had tinny sounding rock /cheesy pop and the basement resembled a slave ship; in that people where cramed into a narrow 'room' with no dancing floor, limited seats and literally no space to even do a cheeky shoulder shuffle. 2 stars because we were late, but they still allowed us to be seated, the drinks are creative, the bar tender was was lovely and the popcorn shrimp was good. Not sure I'll rush back there, especially as it worked out as almost £65 a head for a very mediocre meal. visited Steam and Rye on 26 Nov 2016

We had the best night at Steam and Rye celebrating my boyfriends birthday. We got a table and the service was great. The waitresses came and checked on us and brought us drinks when we needed. The only criticism I have is that our table was meant to hold a party of 20 luckily there was only 13 of us in the end because 20 would of been a tight squeeze. Its definitely not big enough for 20 10 people at the least! The music was amazing, didn't stop dancing as soon as I got in the there. Hoping to return soon! x visited Steam and Rye on 26 Nov 2016
