“This isn’t the story of Icarus and Daedalus.

It’s Yasmin and Jack.

And we won’t fly too close to the sun.

We’ll fly through the f***er.”

Yasmin is a bright 16- year old girl from the small seaside town of Scarborough. Thrust into the harsh realities of single motherhood, suddenly her life is no longer sandcastles, arcades and donkey rides. Yasmin faces one of life’s greatest challenges completely alone- but can the thing which threatens to ruin her life actually be the thing which saves her?

It takes a lot of PVA glue, newspaper, shoeboxes, and a lot of patience, and then you can Build a Rocket.

Winner of awards at both the Edinburgh and Adelaide Fringe Festivals, and described as the "Best New British Play of the Year" (Richard Jordan, The Stage), Build a Rocket is a universal salute to the many single mothers who manage to achieve the impossible and spin straw into gold. Christopher York’s “Heart-warming, electric, and funny to boot” (This is Radelaide) script tackles the challenging themes of poverty and privilege without reducing its heroine to a stereotype or her story to a tragedy.

Harriet Wilton’s debut professional performance is a must see in this powerful one-woman depiction of resilience and determination about surpassing even your own expectations of yourself and finding strength in the face of sheer adversity.

Previous praise for cast and crew:

“Harriet Wilton shines as Mari, giving the highest-energy performance of the show and nailing the carefully nuanced potrayal of a woman clinging to her prime.” ****1/2 (The Cambridge Student)

“Director Georgina Deri has utilised the well-designed set and a brilliant cast marvelously with blocking that seems natural and fills the space with ease” ****1/2 (The Tab)
