Description

Hailed as one of the oldest and most notable pubs in Brighton, The Lion and Lobster, just shy of the town centre, is a den of renowned grub, cosy nooks and plush, traditional interiors.

A mighty maze of vintage interiors, The Lion and Lobster stands by its red sea faring name on the outside, but inside is a whole other tale to tell. From brass features and rich mahogany period pieces to walls adorned in framed history and roaring real fires throughout, this is a cosy cavern for Brightonians and out of towners the like. Boasting a regency restaurant, three bars and two beer gardens, The Lion and Lobster is a pub adventure unto its own.

Whilst know for their 'real beer' and selection of local ales, it's the pub thoroughfare that has people talking about The Lion and Lobster. From their catch of the day to homemade pizza's way in to the night, those of you after a delectable dining experience in cosy surroundings should look no further than this traditional Brighton pub.

Good pub /restaurant with friendly staff. Was a lull in the evening when I went... which was good. Food was pleasant but I was not 100% so unfortunately could not get to test the menu to it full potential. Will definitely revisit when I'm next in Brighton. visited The Lion and Lobster on 14 Feb 2017

As ever, the service was utterly brilliant - such lovely waitresses! Would have given it a four or five star, but the food was a little so-so - soup was cold in the middle, lukewarm on the edges; burger was somewhat dried out, brisket needed more sauce. Pudding was good. Won't put me off trying the Lion and Lobster again, but this is the second time the food had proved a wee bit disappointing. visited The Lion and Lobster on 11 Feb 2017

This was my first visit.....when first entering the pub I was overwhelmed by the amount of people on such a small place....great atmosphere but far too crowded for me....I was pleasently surprised when we went up stairs to the restaurant how relaxed and calm it was (much more me) the waitresses were delightful, the venue is stunning and the roast (but roast) was THE BEST I have ever had I can't wait to return x visited The Lion and Lobster on 05 Feb 2017

The atmosphere was fun but the starters were really not very good, my crab cakes were like eating brown bread, I sent them back. The other starter with the cheese balls and salad had very little flavour. Main course took us 1 hour and 15 min to get served from the time we sat down turned out to be quite good, the sea bream and the fish soup. Overall price was good compared to London where I live so had the starters and service been better I would have given you a better rating. thanks Marjorie visited The Lion and Lobster on 14 Jan 2017

WE are in the restaurant, the table was very small for four prople, we didn't ask to move as the tables were all the same for four or two people, only larger tables for five or six settings. Two of the meals were good and two mediocre, the wine was good value, service was good and friendly. Wouldn't rush back but I think we will try again but eat in the bar next time. visited The Lion and Lobster on 13 Jan 2017

Sent the following to restaurant via email but they did not bother responding which says something in itself.. We booked and had a meal for 6 on 30 Dec at 1pm. Your team kindly re-seated us next to a window, and we're super polite throughout (although they did not update us about the lateness of the food). I fear that an under-resourced-kitchen let you down. Unfortunately, my parents and I came away with a really poor impression due to poor quality food and slow service. It took over an hour for our food to turn up c.2:35-2.40pm, and therefore we only had minutes to eat before catching a flight on the i360 at 3:10pm. As a result, I did not have time to speak with you about our experience. We were rushed at the end, nor could we have a coffee and sit for a moment. Child's portion: absolutely giant portion of chips. Most of which got left due to it turning up late, and us feeding our son bread from the table to keep him going. Burger (me and my dad) - dry, "poorly prepared", poorly presented (cheese was completely melted and stuck on like glue and dried a little). I noticed my dad did not eat the bacon. Halloumi burger - more bread than filling, and filling was bland. Dry. In consolidation, my mum enjoyed the duck, and our other guest enjoyed the macaroni. Kind regards, visited The Lion and Lobster on 30 Dec 2016

Unfortunately our lunch from the Christmas Menu was not good. The Turkey was horrible and the Venison was chewy. The crumble topping on the fruit crumble was rock hard, could have broken a tooth! I have eaten at The Lion and Lobster before, but not had a roast. It was a perfect way to spend a wet, cold winters day. The pub is full of character and is so cosy. The atmosphere is calm , the staff are friendly and the food was delicious. The kids loved their food and the portions were very generous. I would recommend the pints of Bloody Mary. I would also say that it is refreshing to see staff that are so happy and really know how to treat a customer well. My experience at The Lion and Lobster was sadly disappointing. I had been looking forward to returning after an amazing meal a few years ago and was sad to be greeted by a watery cream soup in place of a 'carbonara sauce' with no bacon in it and some wilted rocket in place of a salad, as well as a fatty, tough steak when I had asked for rare and being charged for another bread roll after one of the two complimentary rolls had been knocked onto the floor. The staff didn't seem to care very much and were very slow at serving us. To give them credit where it's due, the waiter who brought our wine was very nice and the decor of the place was stunning. It's just a shame that the food did not match it and my good memories of it has now been soured. visited The Lion and Lobster on 01 Jan 2017

We go to the lion & Lobster frequently and love the pub and food however we were disappointed with our NYE experience. We've been to the L&L on a previous NYE a number of years ago and book this year based upon that experience (great food, table decorations, dressing up novelties, good music, dancing and party atmosphere all for a great price), sadly nothing like this year. Mixed opinion on food poor/ average starters and desserts, very good mains, no bread offered. The music was just background music and there wasn't any dancing or party atmosphere. No table decs or extras. It was just like going out for a meal with generally average food. I must commend the L&L for its menu and drinks pricing policy for NYE as they did not use it as an opportunity to inflate prices. Good value regardless of our disappointment. Based upon this experience we won't book NYE again. We're not looking for any gestures. Still fans of the pub. visited The Lion and Lobster on 31 Dec 2016

They looked after us very well for a family dinner for 7. It you want a bistro pub with a great atmosphere just off the Brighton seafront this ticks all the boxes. My only slight criticism was that there popularity had caused 3 or 4 dishes to be off the menus; the menu is varied enough that this was not an issue. I suppose what is better; a restaurant that has everything on because no one goes too or a popular restaurant that has to take some things off? I do really like this place and will return. visited The Lion and Lobster on 29 Dec 2016

The staff were very good but unfortunately they seemed overworked as the service want great. I could have forgiven this if the food had been good but it was poor. Luke warm, 4 brussells were the only green veg on the plate the rest of veg consisted a parsnips and 4 chantilly carrots and three roast potatoes. The soup was very gloopy and the bhaji in the middle seemed undercooked. We have been many times on a Sunday and the food has been tremendous unfortunately not today which was a shame as there was 9 of us going for a Boxing Day treat! visited The Lion and Lobster on 26 Dec 2016

We were tourists and fortunate enough to find this quintessential English pub with its many pictures and cosy rooms. The food was generous and flavoursome, the staff were excellent and it was just the perfect Christmas Eve lunch. Thank you so much. visited The Lion and Lobster on 24 Dec 2016

Lovely pub very good food but why do they think everyone wants to have football stuffed down their throats and have a tv screen in every single corner of pub that's continually on, it just a typical assumption from what you expect from a down market lads pub. Why don't they have few slot machines and a couple of pool tables just to make sure it panders to the lowest common denominator. (Would be 5 stars) visited The Lion and Lobster on 24 Dec 2016

Far beyond our expectations. Some Sundays, lunch at the Lion & Lobster is rather thrown on the plate since Gary Whelan left the premises. But on Christmas Eve it was beautifully - plentifully - presented by a gracious and lovely staff. Thank you. Bruce Montague and his 14 guests. visited The Lion and Lobster on 24 Dec 2016

My friends met me at the Lion and Lobster and it was their first experience there. They absolutely loved it and will no doubt visit again. I was a bit dubious when I arrived to be told that there were several christmas lunches going on upstairs but we were in a lovely quiet room and the service did not suffer, although I'm sure they were run off their feet. Sadly you ran out of pork, but the substitute was well received. My guest did comment on the baked alaska which appeared not to have any meringue on it! However, overall a lovely meal, huge portions and good service. This is not my first visit but I will definitely be coming again. visited The Lion and Lobster on 22 Dec 2016

The food was lovely, and the atmosphere was fantastic. But on arrival we waited 35 minutes to get our drinks, and we found the hostess quite abrupt and rude, we did appreciate that she would have been extremely busy, but when my friend asked her where one of our drinks was (we were a drink down after our long wait) she brushed him off and just replied 'wait a minute' before just walking off... it did come across very rude... aside from the bar being extremely disorganised - our next order of drinks had a few errors - we had a great xmas party and the food was great. visited The Lion and Lobster on 21 Dec 2016

We were a little disappointed with the slow service. we had to ask 3 times for our drinks order. The main meal 3 of us had the roast. The veg was really hard, wasn't that hot and the meat was really chewy. Good atmosphere although food not the best, I have had better before. visited The Lion and Lobster on 16 Dec 2016

Food and service as always simply superb ! Danielle and her team are great, we had the Christmas lunch which was delicious ! Later in the bar I bought a bottle of wine unsure which Sauvignon to go for, the girl behind the bar immediately suggested she allowed me to try both, a very simple gesture but one that is rarely demonstrated in many other establishments. Disappointed as was v much looking forward to meal and had been highly recommended by several people. Ambience was great and service was v attentive HOWEVER meal was so disappointing. Both of us had bream with potatoe salad with fennel and hint iof crab. In effect it was a hot piece of fish on cold potatoe salad. The fish was fine but the potatoe salad was Cold and didn't work with the hot fish. Nothi g else accompanied the dish so little colour to plate and looked v unappetising. Potatoe salad it self was v ordinary and somewhat tasteless. I am not a particularly great cook but felt I could have done better!! The meal also arrived about 8 mins after we ordered it . No sense of occasion. . £12.95 I felt was not worth it. Felt dissatisfied with my eating experience , visited The Lion and Lobster on 05 Dec 2016

The good news is that the food was as delicious as ever - I had the beef and it was extremely tasty, as were the vegetables and amazing gravy. Unfortunately we were in the big window above the sign where the radiators were on, the window open and the fire lit which made for an overheated but draughty mix. Also the sun was low in the faces of two of our party. We couldn't move the curtains across as they are only ornamental. They sat squinting and slowly roasting. The only advice we got was to open the window! Must remember to request non-window/non-fire side table in future. visited The Lion and Lobster on 06 Nov 2016

The place had a nice feel to it with friendly staff AND that's where the experience went in a completely different direction . We went the ll with great expectations after a good review from the hotel manager and en route our taxi driver both saying what a great place it was which maybe if all you go out for is a drink then I understand the praise . BUT the food is truly appalling my Terrine was so badly made with an awful gritty texture over powered with liver completely under seasoned . Then came the Main courses I could go into all the technical details of what it was wrong but to say it was just dry as a bone with tiny micro dots of jus the potato cake just tasted like pan fried mash again no,seasoning what so ever ,the burger was so over cooked that it was like dry mince . If the place was packed maybe you would say a few dishes might have got past the pass with out being checked BUT it was very early in the evening and we where one of 4 tables and it still took 45 mins plus to get our main courses . The saving grace of this disaster of a meal was the restaurant managers professionalism who completely took all the food of the bill without even being asked it's a shame the kitchen does not have the same standards and if I was in charge of those kitchen I would be very embarrassed to call myself a chef Regards V visited The Lion and Lobster on 04 Nov 2016
