Description

Hailed as one of the oldest and most notable pubs in Brighton, The Lion and Lobster, just shy of the town centre, is a den of renowned grub, cosy nooks and plush, traditional interiors.

A mighty maze of vintage interiors, The Lion and Lobster stands by its red sea faring name on the outside, but inside is a whole other tale to tell. From brass features and rich mahogany period pieces to walls adorned in framed history and roaring real fires throughout, this is a cosy cavern for Brightonians and out of towners the like. Boasting a regency restaurant, three bars and two beer gardens, The Lion and Lobster is a pub adventure unto its own.

Whilst know for their 'real beer' and selection of local ales, it's the pub thoroughfare that has people talking about The Lion and Lobster. From their catch of the day to homemade pizza's way in to the night, those of you after a delectable dining experience in cosy surroundings should look no further than this traditional Brighton pub.

We hired the private function room at the back of the restaurant (1st floor). The room is lovely and and we totally appreciate the fact that we could put our own decorations. However, the food was average. As a starter I had the baby squid carbonara, which I enjoyed (we all did actually), definitely something I had never tried before. However, my main (cheese burger), was really average and the chips a bit undercooked. I have been a customer for many years and for a long time I thought you could eat the best burger in town here, this is no longer the case. All in all we had a good time and although they don't provide high-chairs, we could manage and we had a good time. visited The Lion and Lobster on 03 Jun 2017

We went there to play the Quiz, being the first time I play a quiz in UK I did not know the rules. This guy gave me 2 sheets with a selection of images which I was supposed to answer below what/who they were and another one with blank rows. He looked very amused when I was telling him that I was focusing in answering the images first because he didn't tell me I was supposed to answers to the question he was asking! He looked even more amused when I brought the sheets back and started to laugh at me ! That was an awful and disrespectful behaviour . If I think about it now I get pissed again. I'll never come back again. visited The Lion and Lobster on 29 May 2017

IT WAS AS GOOD AS EVER, DESPITE THE BANK HOLIDAY WEEK-END MEANING THAT IT WAS VERY BUSY. MY DUCK JUST FELL OFF THE BONE, AND WE COULDN'T MANAGE A SWEET. ONE VERY SLIGHT CRITICISM. I think this was the fourth or fifth time I have visited the L7L in the last couple of months, and it was as good as ever. Despite it being a busy Bank holiday week-end the service was quick and efficient. My duck leg was excellent (almost too much) and my friend said his rib-eye steak was also well up to L&L standard. We were too full to stop for pudding, but the coffee was great, Like General MacArthur, I shall undoubtedly return! visited The Lion and Lobster on 30 Apr 2017

Booked for a party of 30. The atmosphere was terrific, the staff really friendly and attentive and the puddings great. Sadly though, main courses on the whole were not good - tough steaks (some impossible to cut), missing ingredients from a number of Super Salads, etc. Such a shame, but will give the venue another go, cos I know from experience food can be great. visited The Lion and Lobster on 26 Apr 2017

Fantastic food which was on the table very quickly - big thanks to the main guy who waited on our table too - He was excellent. I would definitely go for the private room again with a big group. Also, the staff went out of their way to make sure they didn't give the game away as it was a suprise 40th - that was much appreciated. Cheers L and L visited The Lion and Lobster on 23 Apr 2017

Food wasn't great and service was very poor didn't ask for the bill and it got put on the table and was told there were other people waiting to sit down for dinner even though the reservation was for 2 hours on the table and had only been there 1 hour and 15 mins! Very disappointed won't be coming back again visited The Lion and Lobster on 22 Apr 2017

The venue is a popular pub and always seems busy, however I found it rather dirty, (the carpet alone looks like it could walk out on it's own) and the menu too contrived (milk snow) for an old fashion styled pub. The staff were friendly, the food was just ok, just wish it was cleaner and a bit more realistic with the menu.. visited The Lion and Lobster on 22 Apr 2017

So let me tell you about our experience in the Lion and Lobster. The atmosphere is great and the pub has so many little nooks and crannies to sit and enjoy a drink. It has an amazing terrace which looks like an old living room without a roof on it. Loads of different ales if that's your thing. It's downfall for me unfortunately was the food. Richard's duck rillette smelt of cigar smoke, which we ended getting for free and the crispy pork belly wasn't crispy at all. Not overly impressed. On the website during the week, I booked this for Friday because they had live blues being played too. Great I thought. A meal and some live music. But this had been cancelled weeks ago because of football and the website was not updated. Anyone who knows me knows exactly what I think about football. Really disappointed as the blues band was still scheduled on the website. I complained at about 8.30, an hour after the band should have come on and we got a free drink each, and the blame fell on head office as usual. Lack of communication and an eye for detail I feel. So..... atmosphere great, food very mediocre and don't rely on the website for your entertainment info. visited The Lion and Lobster on 21 Apr 2017

We have enjoyed many meals at the Lion & Lobster and booked well in advance to get a table for Easter Sunday Lunch. It was a very busy day in the pub. We were given a lovely table by the window in the restaurant and had very efficient, friendly service. Whilst the Sunday lunch that was served was good, we felt it wasn't as good as those we have enjoyed previously, in particular the potatoes and parsnips were soft/soggy and not cooked well. Overall it was a lovely meal out, but didn't meet expectations on this occasion. visited The Lion and Lobster on 16 Apr 2017

Food and service excellent. Shame experience slightly tarnished by your security staff trying to dictate smoking policy after I had left your premises. Whilst fully understanding you having a policy to stop users of your downstairs bar disturbing your neighbours late evening it does not give this person the right to tell people what they can and cant do once they have left your premises. I am assuming you don't own the pavement! visited The Lion and Lobster on 09 Apr 2017

Always a good experience for Sunday lunch, though had to excuse ourselves from the table for first half hour because of a very noisy proximate table. No longer the best roast in brighton though. Too much tomotae based gravy, and the beef is on thin and brown side. Prefer the rib or brisket offered by others. Wine and service good. visited The Lion and Lobster on 02 Apr 2017

Attentive service but the food was ok-I've had better roasts for the same price or less.It seemed as if the food was already plated up-it arrived very quickly, the broccoli was underdone and the potatoes were not crisp.and it could have been hotter. The puddings were delicious though!overall we enjoyed our Mothers Day meal. visited The Lion and Lobster on 26 Mar 2017

Took my wife and mother in law there for a family meal on Mothers day, We all loved the food and service was good. You get a big meal we all went for roast dinners and my 14 year old son (who is eating for England at the mo) was starting to struggle a bit with how much was on the plate. The only thing I would mention is my mother in law is 83 and going up 2 flights of stairs to go to the toilet was a little difficult for her. visited The Lion and Lobster on 26 Mar 2017

Things didn't go too well in that two starters were forgotten from our party of six. Shouldn't happen but it did. They key thing then is what the restaurant does about it and on this occasion they got it right. The items were omitted from the bill and a round of drinks was provided - all without any prompting from us. The food was good! :-) visited The Lion and Lobster on 26 Mar 2017

As ever, the food, ambience and service were well up to their usual high standards, and we very much enjoyed the occasion. A minor criticism was that they had run out of a couple of items on the Special menu, but it is fair to add that we were later than usual, and anyway, the alternatives offered were very acceptable. The friend with me was visiting L&L for the first time, and was so impressed that he is seriously considering changing his arrangements for a dinner in Brighton next month and choosing the L&L instead. Result! Many thanks for another very enjoyable evening. visited The Lion and Lobster on 22 Mar 2017

Have been to Lion and Lobster on previous occasions and have always enjoyed the food when I have eaten there. Equally the pub has a great friendly atmosphere if just meeting friends in town or popping in on the way home. One of my favourite Brighton pubs. visited The Lion and Lobster on 04 Mar 2017

I have been to the pub several times in the past but unfortunately on Saturday when we were having dinner with friends I had to send my main course back - I ordered lamb with irish stew, the vegetables were still rock hard and not edible. The staff dealt with the matter quickly and I ordered another meal. Hopefully this is only a one off as I enjoy the atmosphere and food usually at the Lion and Lobster. visited The Lion and Lobster on 17 Mar 2017

Re. Sunday evening 12th march. My daughter and myself ordered the Root vegetable bhaji dish. These turned out to be quite stodgy and unpleasant to eat. I'm sure that this dish was never designed to taste as such. I mentioned it to a waitress but didn't get the impression that chef was going to hear. I visited the lion and lobster on Thursday the 9th march 2017. We booked a table on line, but the booking system was down so our place was not reserved. The lion and lobster has always been a special place to me and my partner as it was the place we first met. We planned the meal to celebrate our anniversary of being together , due to other commitments we had to make a reservation at lunch time . We arrived at the pub at 12.30ish to be greeted by two bar staff. The woman behind the bar was rude and abrupt with the other male bar man and customers, she treated us as if she was doing us a favour and continues to belittle the barman, interfering with transactions. It came to a point where I was ordering my drink, a ginger beer and he asked if I would like ice, while standing near the ice bucket, I asked for no ice three times and was still not heard by the barman as the barwoman was too busy telling him what to do. The pub itself looked dirty and in need of a good update and cleaning. The food was very poor. We ordered a fish platter and requested halumi and chicken on the side, the bar lady said this couldn't be done.... and said well I will ask the chef... again as if doing us a favour!! When the food arrived ( with the chicken and cheese) ; The halumi was grilled or griddled, the quality of the cheese was good but it was as if the cheese had been cooked Ina dirty grill. It tasted dirty. Chips ,warm Calamari cold ! Mixed olives, only two green ones in a sea of black . Prawns , tasteless Muscles was cold and disgusting . No one asked us how our food was. The pub only had another group of people that were eating. It wasn't busy at all. So I ask you. After two decades of visiting this pub What has happened to the lion and lobster, as I would really like to know what has changed In The last year that has made this previously lovely pub in to a place I will not visit again. The food was good but unfortunately we were asked to leave at 4 as our table had been booked for someone else which ruined the meal! It feels this is a money making enterprise rather than customer experience I would not recommend this pub if you want to spend time with family and friends due to this! I would probably avoid it in the future! visited The Lion and Lobster on 05 Mar 2017

Great Pub.... 3 of us went for Sunday Lunch and wasn't disappointed. The Service was attentive but not intrusive and by far the best Roast Chicken( free range) I've ever had ... Moist and succulent and I'm very fussy. My friend had the Roast Beef which was cooked to perfection and full of flavour. The accompliments were also delicious opting for a side of cauliflour cheese and pigs in blankets. Nice portions too and the Gravey which had a hint of Rosemary was lush. Good choice of pudds I opted out but my friends had sticky toffee with custard and chocolate and nut brownie and by the lack of conversation at that point apart from the mmmmm's I took as a thumbs up visited The Lion and Lobster on 26 Feb 2017

As ever, the service was utterly brilliant - such lovely waitresses! Would have given it a four or five star, but the food was a little so-so - soup was cold in the middle, lukewarm on the edges; burger was somewhat dried out, brisket needed more sauce. Pudding was good. Won't put me off trying the Lion and Lobster again, but this is the second time the food had proved a wee bit disappointing. visited The Lion and Lobster on 11 Feb 2017
