Description
VICE MAGAZINE: “Indefatigable, prolific and utterly unpublishable, Barbara is the manifestation of bitterness, anger, lesbian cliché... railing against her lot through poetry. Barbara is rubbish, but she doesn’t know it.”
DIVA: “Hilarious”
WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE? Barbara Brownskirt. is a darkly funny, pathos-fuelled poetry/slide theatre show where the audience enter into the bitter-sweet world of Barbara Brownskirt, the prolific but failing Poet of the People.
Produced by Karen McLeod with support from Arts Council England it first debuted at The Marlborough, Brighton Fringe in June 2017 to a sold out audience.
About Barbara Brownskirt
Barbara Brownskirt is the self-appointed poet-in-residence at the 197 bus stop, Croydon Road, Penge. To date she has written 22 volumes of poetry and shows no sign of slowing down. This is her first full length show which is an anarchic presentation of being a poor, unsuccessful lesbian poet alive in 21st century Britain today. Barbara is anorak wearing, unlucky in love, an obsessive Judi Dench fan and her poems are comic but also very moving.
About writer and performer Karen McLeod
Barbara Brownskirt is the construct of Karen McLeod. The character is a misfit born from the same cloth and energy as the 1970s feminist extremist movement. Barbara allows Karen to explore her dark and quirky humour on stage exploring themes such as lesbian cliché, loneliness, narcissism in performance, existentialism, literary snobbery, and the misunderstandings created by language.
A true lover of poetry and prose, Karen McLeod is a prize winning novelist and the writer-in-residence at Bookseller Crow, Crystal Palace. She often works with the performance art collaborative DUCKIE as well as touring around the UK with Polari, the literary salon based at London’s Southbank Centre.
