Pints might be on your shopping list soon.
Ever been halfway through your food shop and thought, "I really fancy a beer right now"?
If so, your prayers have been answered. Budget supermarket chain Lidl will open its first-ever pub in Dundonald, Northern Ireland, in summer 2026, and they've just announced that building is already underway.
This comes after they won a legal battle in January 2025, after a challenge to the proposal was rejected.
Fellow traders Philip Russell Ltd appealed against the opening, stating that Lidl had failed to show there were inadequate licensed premises near the site.
However, this was denied by Mr Justice Colton in the High Court; because two nearby pubs had closed in recent years, the supermarket has passed NIs requirements for opening a pub, and their plans are now full steam ahead - with at least £410,000 being invested into the project.
The pub will not be in-store, but a separate premises next to it, with space for up to 60 customers. It's reported that the pub will serve Lidl's own drinks - including wine, beer and spirits - alongside promoting local suppliers.
