Your expert guide will talk you through:

  • How to taste a range of different beer styles
  • The 4 main ingredients of beer
  • How beer is brewed and how this differs per style
  • History of brewing in the UK and locally
  • The story behind the venues visited and drinks tasted

Our Tasting Tours last around 2.5 - 3 hours in total and can start anytime the venues are open. They generally work well as an afternoon/early evening activity when it's a little less busy and you can hear your guide talk you through the beers.

You'll sample a range of styles from lighter beers such as pale ales, going up on the palette to IPA's and Stouts/Porters. Tasting measures are usually a 1/3 or 1/2 and these differ in amount depending on the venue however guests usually always have a drink in their hand (unless they drink super fast), and we find it's just the right of beer tastings for the time spent on the tour.

Best Craft Beer Bars in York

Brew York
It's difficult to imagine York's newest microbrewery has just been open for four years. Brew York has developed enormously since its humble beginnings in a warehouse tucked away on the backstreets of Walmgate overlooking the River Foss to become one of the country's most interesting brewers. They now have a ten-barrel brewery with a cool taproom, but the main draw is the massive beer hall on the first floor of the warehouse, which features a street food restaurant with rotating vendors and an astonishing 40 keg lines.

Ainsty Ales
Ainsty's began as a cuckoo brewery, producing two batches of beer every month utilising the brewing equipment from Malton's Brass Castle Brewery. In 2014, Ainsty's opened its own brewery. Ainsty Ales is a self-governing region in the beautiful village of Acaster Malbis, south of York, that derives its name from the historic "York & Ainsty District Wapentake," a self-governing territory that was located to the west of York and limited by the rivers Nidd, Wharfe, and Ouse in the 1200s. Ainsty's goal is to make outstanding tasting beers as environmentally as possible, with a heavy emphasis on sustainability and waste minimization.

The Hop Studio
The Hop Studio is one of the city's smaller, lesser-known breweries, located south-east of the city in Elvington, within a stone's throw from the Yorkshire Air Museum. It has been brewing since 2012, when beer enthusiast Dave Shaw began toying with a style he likes to characterise as "authentic British craft beer," making beers filled with flavour and fragrance.

House of Trembling Madness
The House of Trembling Madness promotes itself as a mediaeval drinking hall, named after the trembling madness, or Delirium Tremens (DTs) as it is more popularly known. It is undoubtedly mediaeval (the structure in which it is housed was completed in 1180 as York's first Norman House), yet the term "hall" may be a touch generous. After passing through the off-license and up the very narrow, steep steps, you'll find yourself in a tiny, antique chamber with beams, old seats, and one or two stuffed animal heads. While this pub was originally one of York's best-kept secrets, its extensive beer selection and knowledgeable staff have turned it into a local institution, making it tough to grab a seat.

Hop O Clock
Hop O'Clock is easy to miss if you don't know where to look. It's the brainchild of Jimmy and Julia (originally from Oulu, Finland), who met in Amsterdam and spent time drifting about Europe researching the continent's brews. However, this teeny-tiny bottle boutique on Colliergate is worth searching out. Hop O'Clock has a vibrant and arty ambiance, with Julia's artwork on the walls, and serves roughly 130 beers. Jimmy also owns York's only crowler - a canning machine – which allows him to get kegs of rarer beers for you to drink at home.
