Description

Tucked away in the peaceful village of Ellastone on the Staffordshire-Derbyshire border, The Duncombe Arms is one of those rare pubs that nails both charm and high-quality food without feeling stuffy. The building is from the 1850s, and the interiors lean into its history with exposed beams, comfy snugs, log burners, and a rustic-chic twist in the furniture and art. It’s warm, light, welcoming; somewhere you want to linger over dinner or settle into after a walk. When the weather allows, there’s a spacious garden with lovely views over the Dove Valley.

What really sets it apart is the cooking. Head Chef Scott Law drives a menu that leans into classic and modern British, with an emphasis on seasonal, locally sourced produce. There’s foraging, there’s a kitchen garden, there’s game in season, and the drinks list is seriously well thought out, with a solid wine list, interesting ales, and plenty to explore.

The Duncombe Arms holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand (recognised for excellent food at good value), it's been in the Estrella Damm Top 50 Gastropubs, and it was crowned ‘Pub of the Year 2024’ at the Enjoy Staffordshire Tourism and Good Food Awards. If you’re planning a stay, the pub also offers ten boutique-style bedrooms in their Walnut House annexe with stylish country-chic decor, unique wallpapers, well-chosen art and all the creature comforts.
