Description
At the very end of Folkestone Harbour Arm, there’s a small 19th-century lighthouse that’s been repurposed as a Champagne bar. Getting there is part of the experience because it’s a short walk along the harbour, with the sea gradually opening out around you, until you reach this slightly unexpected spot right on the edge. Inside, it’s simple and compact, but the setting does most of the talking, with wide views across the Channel towards France on a clear day.
It’s not a formal or overly polished kind of place. People tend to drop in for a drink, take in the views, and move on, though it’s easy enough to linger. The atmosphere shifts with the weather — calm and bright one moment, windier and more exposed the next — which is part of what makes it feel a bit different from your usual bar. You’re very aware of where you are, surrounded by water with very little in between you and the horizon.
The drinks list centres on Champagne and English sparkling wine, which makes sense given the location. There’s an emphasis on local producers alongside the French classics, reflecting the fact that Kent has become known for its own vineyards.
