Description

Russ & Daughters Cafe, located on Orchard Street in Manhattan’s Lower East Side, is a sit-down extension of the legendary Russ & Daughters appetizing shop, which has been a New York institution since 1914. Opened in 2014 by fourth-generation owners Niki Russ Federman and Josh Russ Tupper, the café blends old-world charm with modern elegance. The interior features tiled floors, marble counters, vintage-inspired fixtures, and an open kitchen with a spotlighted salmon-slicing station, all echoing the original storefront’s aesthetic. The atmosphere is warm and nostalgic, inviting guests to linger over classic Jewish comfort food in a space that honors its century-old heritage.

The menu celebrates the tradition of “appetizing”—a Jewish culinary category focused on fish and dairy, distinct from the meat-centric delicatessen. Signature dishes include hot and cold-smoked Scottish salmon with everything-bagel chips, caramelized chocolate babka French toast, and “eggs Benny” with salmon, spinach, and challah.

Russ & Daughters Cafe has earned a Bib Gourmand designation from the Michelin Guide, recognizing its high-quality food at good value. It’s also been named one of the ten best new restaurants in New York by critics and continues to be a beloved destination for locals and visitors seeking a taste of authentic Jewish-American cuisine with a refined twist.
