Cubbyhole

Description

Cubbyhole, located in Manhattan’s West Village, is one of New York City’s last remaining lesbian bars and a beloved institution within the LGBTQ+ community. The bar is known for its vibrant, eclectic interior - green walls, a decorative ceiling adorned with hanging ornaments, and a cosy, lived-in feel that reflects its welcoming ethos. Though compact in size, Cubbyhole radiates warmth and inclusivity, often packed with a diverse crowd enjoying strong drinks, a jukebox soundtrack, and a sense of camaraderie that’s hard to find elsewhere.

Originally opened in 1987 as DT’s Fat Cat by Tanya Saunders and Debbie Fierro, the bar was renamed Cubbyhole in 1994 and is now owned by Lisa Menichino, a longtime bartender turned proprietor. Cubbyhole is widely celebrated in LGBTQ+ circles and cultural projects for its resilience, legacy, and community impact. It remains a cherished cornerstone of New York nightlife, especially as queer spaces continue to face challenges and closures.
