Cloud 23's new cocktail progression hits the spot.

Manchester’s sky-high champagne and cocktail bar? It promises ‘indulgence, elegance and opulence’, served up alongside iconic 23rd floor panoramic views. So, when I heard about Cloud 23’s new progression menu, it’s fair to say that I had equally lofty expectations.

‘Bubbles and Berries’ is a refreshing and luxurious set menu, more than exceeding what you might expect from your average taster menu. The bespoke line-up features five a la carte canapes, but this swanky spread is merely the supporting act to a Perrier-Jouët based cocktail selection that takes seasonal fruity flavours to new heights. Personal highlights for me came in the tart ‘Bold Blackberry’ cocktail, the first on the bill of fare, which combines Perrier Jouet Brut, vodka, blackberry, lemon and apple for a moreish finish. The ‘Crisp Lingonberry’ comes third as a full-bodied, punchy number that harks back to summer (no matter how close it may seem now). And I found the ‘Rich Red Berry’ to be a fantastic finisher to a menu with clear momentum.

In terms of the supporting dishes, the tender beef Carpaccio served with balsamic red onions and pistachio crumb and chilli crab mousse with crispy melba toast are both exceptional, while the rich black forest brownie was simply decadence on a plate.

Each cocktail-canape pairing is well-balanced and visually winsome. You really get a feel for what they’re trying to achieve, sat amongst hanging auburn leaves and other lively decor, as sweet, tangy, spicy tipples paint an autumn scene on your tongue. The attention to detail is next to none.

Running until mid-November, ‘Bubbles and Berries’ is a rich progression that places the focus firmly on cocktail chemistry, embodying all the zing, bite and beauty of autumn. If you’re looking for classy vibes in a stunning setting, Cloud 23’s latest taster menu is well worth exploring.
