Capital in Crisis

All things must pass. At some point that will include what we call London. The Romans ruled here for 400 years but eventually their city fell into ruin. What will happen to ours? Join historian DR RICHARD BARNETT and London resilience planning officer MATTHEW HOGAN  to explore the possibilities. Richard will explore the various ways in which artists, writers, scientists and politicians have imagined the destruction of the city whilst Matt will describe the various contingency plans the city authorities have in place for  catastrophic scenarios including mass casualties, terror attack, flooding  and pandemics.

RICHARD BARNETT is a writer, teacher and broadcaster, mostly on the history of science and medicine, and a poet. His books – translated into six languages so far – include international bestseller The Sick Rose, Medical London, a BBC Radio 4 Book of the Week, and the award-winning poetry collection Seahouses. He has taught the history of science and medicine at Cambridge, Oxford, UCL and other leading institutions for more than a decade, and in 2011 received one of the first Wellcome Trust Engagement Fellowships. He writes regularly for the Lancet, and has made many appearances on TV and radio around the world.

MATTHEW HOGAN is an award winning Resilience Specialist.  He  is a founder member of the UK VOST Development Team seeking to bring insight from social media to emergency response organisations to help maintain situational awareness. He is also a member of the Executive Committee of the London Branch of the Emergency Planning Society. He established Disaster Tours in late 2013 which combine my professional knowledge with my passion for London’s extensive history of emergencies in regular walking tours.
