Join us for the sixth Westminster Arts Reference Library's Artists of London salons where historian Guy Rowston examines the extraordinary life and work of WENCESLAUS HOLLAR, an emigre Bohemian artist who settled in London and whose images helped define the view of the Restoration city . In addition to the talk and a Q+A, each event will include a spotlight on a special item from the Library's collection.
Wenceslaus Hollar was a prolific and accomplished Bohemian graphic artist of the 17th century, who spent much of his life in London. His etchings and engravings, particularly his panoramas of the city are now more famous than the man himself and are often used as the archetypal view of “old London”. Though the 17th century London, that Hollar knew, is now largely destroyed, the surviving 2,800 prints, watercolours and drawings Hollar created have immortalised his visions of life then.
In this talk, historian Guy Rowston, traces the life and times of Hollar from his birth in Prague in 1607 through his life as one of the most ingenious illustrators of his time. Rownston will examine how the plague and the Great Fire of London left their marks on Hollar’s work, looking at the artist’s plans of London before and after 1666.
Tickets £4.80 including a 50% donation to the Westminster Arts Reference Library
