A time when wild new trends blossomed and the grey conformist world of ersatz and austerity was cast off in colourful and youthful fashion and the boutiques and discotheques of Chelsea, Carnaby Street and Soho taught the world to dress up and get down.
Acclaimed agony aunt VIRGINIA IRONSIDE was just twenty in 1964 when her debut novel Chelsea Bird, a witty portrait of arty King’s Road wastrels and wannabes, was published to immediate acclaim. As pop critic of The Daily Mail she was an early champion of The Beatles and joined The Byrds on their first ever UK tour.
Historian DAVID KYNASTON's Northern Wind: Britain 1962-65 is the latest and brilliant instalment in his magisterial survey of the post-war era, and a book that takes us into the heart of the age of Boom, The Profumo Scandal and James Bond.
With Travis Elborough, they'll be discussing the decade that brought us the mini-skirt, England’s World Cup football victory and Harold Wllson’s ‘White Heat of Technology’ Labour Government and the style revolution of Mary Quant and BIBA that set all of London Swinging.
