Part one:

ASYLUM SPEAKERS: IS THE UK DOING ENOUGH?

WITH JAZ o'HARA, Roh Yakobi and MORE TBC

Jaz O’Hara’s first visit to the Calais ‘Jungle’ - a refugee camp on the English border – kickstarted a campaign that reached 13 million people and filled warehouses across the country with donations. In the eight years since, Jaz has worked tirelessly across Europe and the Middle East to tell the stories from refugee camps that too often go unheard. Jaz’s new book ‘Asylum Speakers’ brings together those voices in a collection of essays that go far beyond borders, nationalities, religions and, languages.

In this ThinkIn, we uncover the truths of the refugee experience, from the difficult choice to flee their homeland to what happens when they arrive in their new home and the perilous journeys along the way.
How easy is it to build a new life in a foreign country? What kind of welcome do immigrants receive and how much is their day-to-day experience impacted by political rhetoric? What else can we do as a country, and a society, to help build a more welcoming home for people fleeing war and persecution?

Tortoise contributing editor Roh Yakobi came to the UK in 2004. As a child in Afghanistan, he was kidnapped and tortured by the Taliban, and spent time as a child refugee in Iran and Pakistan. Since arriving in the UK, Roh has become a journalist, podcaster and political analyst.
For this ThinkIn, Roh and Jaz are joined by special guests who will share their remarkable and inspiring stories of adversity, courage and ultimately, hope.

Copies of 'Asylum Seekers: Human stories from the global refugee crisis' will be available at a special ticket-holder rate.

Part two:

The Tortoise Interview with MUSA OKWONGA and Liz Moseley

Celebrated author, podcaster and musician Musa Okwonga was born in the UK after his parents fled Uganda and Idi Amin’s dictatorship. As a young black man and second-generation immigrant in a working class town, Musa wasn’t your typical Eton College student, but he spent five years there in the 1990s and recounted his experiences in ‘One of them’, a deeply personal and unflinching memoir which engaged with much wider questions about pressing social and political issues: privilege, the distribution of wealth, the rise of the far right in the UK, systemic racism, the ‘boys’ club’ of government and the power of the few to control the fate of the many.

What was it like growing up in the UK as a second-generation immigrant in the 1980s and 90s? Musa’s complex relationship with the UK - what he refers to as gratitude, mixed with horrifying moments of institutional racism like the murder of Stephen Lawrence - took another turn with the rise of UKIP and anti-immigrant anger, ultimately leading to the UK’s vote to leave the EU.
