In a ghost story published in 1968 and recently adapted by Channel 4 in a Mark Gatis short film, Robert Aickman’s The Cicerones tell of an academic who is stalked and finally trapped by ghosts in a cathedral in Eastern Europe. But Aickman’s Cicerones, argues Roger Clarke, author of A Natural History of Ghosts, is the final part of an unacknowledged 100 year-old trilogy which was begun by Sheridan LeFanu in Ireland and continued by the Provost of Eton and King’s College Cambridge, MR James. This trilogy is of a particular gothic sub-genre which might be called ‘The Unsafe Church’. It is about the dead who watch the living, greedily, from their tombs on consecrated grounds, and seek merely the briefest of provocations to act.

Beginning with LeFanu’s Schalken the Painter, which is the tale of a dead merchant buying a living bride, continuing with MR James’s own favourite of his stories Count Magnus, where an academic unwittingly evokes a demonic aristocrat, and finishing with the Aickman’s Cicerones, Roger Clarke will show how these stories link written many decades apart overlap and complement each other, and how the dead hand of commerce, power and religion come together to predate on the living.

Tickets £12 including a Hendrick's gin cocktail.
