Tom Smith Septet

Finalist of the BBC Young Jazz Musician of Year

The world loves competitions these days, and it seems people aren't interested unless there are judges whirling round in big red chairs, but music really isn't like that. The latest amazing group of jazz talent emerging from the top colleges work and play together, and we are proud to present a three-night festival to demonstrate that the whole is even greater than the sum of the parts. Collaboration, not competition. Very jazz...

This weekend, Toulouse Lautrec will feature three ensembles, involving several BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year participants and their colleagues, in their natural habitat – playing together, performing their music, their way. Welcome to the future.
Produced by Jason Lyon

The first night of our summer festival - a celebration of award-winning young jazz talent and a chance to hear the future - opens with the Tom Smith Septet.

Tom Smith is a jazz saxophonist, flautist, clarinettist and pianist based in London, who was a BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year finalist in both 2014 and 2016.

From a very early age Tom was immersed in music, starting with studying piano and clarinet and eventually settling on saxophone, as well as teaching himself both flute and oboe on the way. While learning with Katie Brown and Gareth Hunt he became involved with the Junior Jazz course at the Royal Academy of Music and joined the National Youth Jazz Collective, and now he is studying as an undergrad at the Royal Academy of Music. He is now involved heavily with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra as an active deputy, as well as with function agency Earcandy.
